ref. 46400242, Barcelona, Torner, 1828; 2 vol. in-8, basane fauve marbr., dos ornés. 1923Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. 439 p. First Edition, thus. This first Turkish translation of Robinson Crusoe made by Sükrü Kaya is produced while the translator was in exile in Malta. With the help of Michael Seidel's argument, for instance, Kaya's translation might be regarded not only as a translation made in the circumstances of exile but also as a translation of what Seidel calls an "exile narrative". This might be the only reason why Kaya decided to translate this novel. It is highly probable that he was feeling depressed and lonely; therefore, he chose to translate the story of a lonely man like himself. Indeed, Kaya declares in the translator's preface to Robinson Crusoe that the activity of translation to an extent made him forget the pain of captivity [= Tercüme mesguliyeti bana esaretin acilarini kismen unutturuyordu]. The first Turkish translation of this novel was made by Ahmed Lutfî and published by Takvimhâne-i Âmire as early as 1864. It was an abridged translation, and an unabridged translation was not made until 1919 when Sükrü Kaya was in exile in Malta. This unabridged translation made by Kaya was published by Tanin Printing House in Istanbul in 1923, and it belonged to -The Collection of Immortal Works- [Ölmez Eserler Külliyati]. Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719) has been attracting the attention of many critics and scholars both in the West and in Turkey for years. Robinson Crusoe was originally written in English, and published on April 25, 1719, and its title was in fact quite long. Robinson Crusoe is among the novels which are argued to be the first English novel. The book has obtained worldwide fame, and there are hundreds of translations and adaptations. Probably due to the success of the first novel, Defoe wrote the second book which is entitled The Further Adventures of Robinson Crusoe. (Sources: THE SHAPING ROLE OF RETRANSLATIONS IN TURKEY: THE CASE OF ROBINSON CRUSOE, Asli Emekçi.; OSMANLICADA ROBENSON, Ayse Banu Karadag). Sükrü Kaya, (1883-1959), was a Turkish civil servant and politician, who served as a government minister, Minister of Interior and Minister of Foreign affairs in several governments. (Wikipedia). First edition of this uncommon and complete photogravure art set filled with the remarkable images of Benjamin Gifford issued in conjunction with the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle WA. Gifford 1859-1936 is considered perhaps Oregon’s most famous photographer and his beautiful images included here depict a Brass Era automobile driving on Sandy Road to Mt. Hood; Forestry Building from the 1905 Lewis & Clark Exposition; Fish wheel on the Columbia River; Multnomah Falls; a sternwheeler steamship on the Columbia River; aftermath of Mt. Hood forest fire; Birds-eye view of the Lewis & Clark Exposition grounds; three views of Celilo Falls including two of Native Americans fishing; downtown Portland OR and others. Many of the photogravures also depict the Deschutes River the Rogue River Valley Mount Washington log rafts on the Columbia River and Latourelle Falls. Gifford first worked in Portland until 1895 then opened a studio in The Dalles and later returned to Portland in 1910 where he continued to operate both studios until about 1920. Later his son Ralph I. Gifford took over operation of the studio and continued to operate the business. Williams 1823-1910 served as chief justice of the Oregon Territory Supreme Court delegate to the statehood constitutional convention was a key figure in his ruling that slavery was not legal in Oregon and later aggressively prosecuted cases against the Klu Klux Klan for President Grant. Although he served as mayor from 1902-1905 his tenure during the Lewis & Clark Exposition featured considerable police and political corruption and failed to stem either gambling or prostitution in the City. Walter D. Harney b. 1869 was a noted newspaper and magazine publisher in Oshkosh and Racine Wisconsin who published several of these promotional works on Oregon Spokane and Tacoma eventually moving to King County before World War I himself. These could either be purchased originally in fascicles or all nine bound together in full calf binding which is the much more common appearance of the set. There are variations in the Gifford photos featured in individual sets. W.D. Harney Photogravure Publisher; [The Lakeside Press, R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co.], paperback

1571ref. 19997Antverpiae: Christophori Plantini. Good. 1571. First Edition. Hardcover. This is a nice clear example of early printing from the famous Plantinian press. Chriophori Plantini 1520 - 1589 was a well-known French printer and publisher who lived and worked in Amsterdam. He is perhaps the most famous printer of this era. The buildings housing the famous press are still in existence and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This book contains three separate works in one volume with separate title pages for each part. Plantini's distinctive printer's mark is on each title page. Pagination for the three parts-- I: 353 7 pp. II: 80 4 pp. III: 29 3 pp. The binding is full leather with gilt decoration on the front and rear and each cover has a gilt rule along the edges. The covers are both detached and the 4 cords have broken. The leather hubbed spine is missing a portion at the top and chipped at the bottom. This appearst to be a later binding for the book. The pages are generally clear and clean though there is a small worm hole at the top corner of the first 40 pages There is a triangular booklate on the front paste down with the printed name: "Roy A. Tower;" the rear end paper also has a bookplate showing a rat eating a book. There are also couple of old names in ink in an old hand on the front end paper. Sold with all faults. This appears to be the earliest edition of this book from Plantin's press in Amsterdam. Please inquire if you would like more information about this early Plantin press publication.
