Così inizia l'"autobiografia" di Gelmino Ottaviani, operaio metalmeccanico veneto, che ripercorre in diciannove capitoli - dall'infanzia, vissuta in un ambiente rurale, al lavoro e all'impegno sindacale in fabbrica, fino ad arrivare alla pensione - la sua vita. In un continuo alternarsi di episodi, riflessioni e ricordi, la vicenda personale e familiare s'intreccia con gli eventi più importanti della storia italiana del Novecento, dando vita a un piccolo-grande affresco disincantato e, allo stesso tempo, poetico. Come scrive Marco Bentivogli nella Prefazione: "Cipolle e libertà è un racconto intenso, che ha ispirato anche un bellissimo monologo del Teatro Civico di Marco Paolini. Un libro che si legge tutto d'un fiato e da cui emerge tanto, sia della storia da cui veniamo, ma anche e soprattutto del presente che stiamo vivendo".
