The Art Palace was built for the 1902 Industry and Craft Exhibition for the Rhineland Westfalia and neighboring districts. The building of the Kunstpalast was in large part due to the efforts of Fritz Roeber director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy the painter Georg Oeder and the art historian Paul Clement in the late 1800s who were able to convince Heinrich Lueg director of the association for commerce that the time for another great art and commerce exhibition had come. The goal was the establishment of a new permanent venture for art exhibitions that was to become the center of the arts in the Rhinelands and Westfalia. Lueg took the lead and started the planing for the Kunstpalast already in 1898. The goal was to exhibit the development of the past 20 years in a formidable gallery and the 1900 Paris World exhibition was the model for the undertaking. Despite the fact that some of the planned buildings were not ready by the opening of the two exhibitions it opened on May 1st and closed on October 20th 1902 the exhibitions became a huge success. 2011réf. 52973Leiden: Brill 2011. First edition. Hardcover. Good . Octavo. xvi 339 1pp. Index and 24 page bibliography. Text in English with occasional samples of Indonesian languages. Pictorial boards with lilac/gray spine lettered in white. A fine but ex-library copy with minimal markings; i.e. rubber stamps on title page & bottom of text block. Lacking the DVD in a rear pocket. Scholars of religion have always worked closely with media of one kind or another from sacred books and archaic languages to cassette-sermons and the Internet. Yet comparatively little attention has been paid to the ways we actually use these and other media in the pursuit of historical inquiry. Drawing on ethnographic and archival research conducted on the Indonesian island of Bali this book offers a critique of the media-related assumptions underpinning fields as diverse in their subject matter and approach as the history of religions British cultural studies and Old Javanese philology. Its central contention is that more nuanced attention to problems of media will have serious implications for how we think about the study of religions past and present. Publisher Contents: Religion media history -- The past in the present : a tale of bouquets and bombsites -- Reframing the problem : mediating the recent history of 'the Balinese' -- The subject of tolerance : televising 'the teachings of our religion' -- Assume the position : performative style and the voice of authority -- Substantial transmissions : religion and the idea of 'the old Javanese text' -- Plus c̦a change : from textual fetish to performative accomplishment -- A dramatic performance : mpu kuturan and the three sanctuaries -- The complexity of the realm : chasing a traditional tale. 1962réf. 329644Berkeley :: Oakland: TOCSIN Inc. and Students Associated Against Totalitarianism 1962. A collection of the anti-communist weekly newsletter 8.5x11 inch earliest issue mimeographed. Throughout some minor edgewear from handling address labels more significant damage to several issues including dampstains on vol. 3 no. 41 and vol. 6 no. 2 and a soil stain on front cover of vol. 4 no. 18. Vol. 2 no. 5 Vol. 3 nos. 9 34-35 39 41-2 44-45 47-49 51-52 Vol. 4 nos. 2 5-6 8 10-14 16-24 26-30 33-35 41-45 47-50 Vol. 5 nos. 1-3 7-16 19-20 22-25 27-37 39 43-50 Vol. 6 nos. 1-5 20 27 47 Vol. 8 no. 2. The newsletter began in June 1961 to expose the "Red conspiracy" behind the burgeoning student movement and the greater New Left particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area and at UC Berkeley. This collection spans some of the most important developments at Berkeley from the Free Speech Movement to the anti-Vietnam War activism. Tocsin delved into its mission passionately illustrating each issue with B&W photos taken on the site of rallies or teach-ins naming names and tracing real or imagined Communist lineages family connections factional shifts etc. Surprisingly useful for research because despite its blatant slant no comparably systemic chronicle of local activists and their associations is available in Left publications from the period. 1862réf. 43342Paris. Between 1862 and 1871. The Missouri Militia Plate from Jules Renard Draner's series of caricatures entitled TYPES MILITAIRES: GALERIE MILITAIRE DE TOUTES LES NATIONS published from 1862 to 1871. Draner - which was his nom de plume - was a Belgian artist who settled in Paris. Though he undertook a career as a businessman he never lost his zeal for drawing and caricature and in the 1860s he undertook to satirize the world's zest for military pomp with a series of 136 color lithographs depicting various military uniforms from around the world including ten plates showing American uniforms. Though his drawings were executed with an eye toward entertainment and caricature each shows accurate military dress down to appropriate use of feathers and buttons. This image shows a portly artilleryman presumably a German settler in Missouri decked out in a blue uniform with red trim holding a plate in one hand and a fork in the other. He is in New Orleans as indicated by a poster behind him evidently as part of occupying troops during the Civil War. He directs a horrified look at the bits of red food on his plate and fork perhaps intended to be some sort of foreign or New Orleans delicacy. Quite nice and highly displayable. Handcolored lithograph 13½ x 9 inches matted to 19 x 14 inches. A few light spots of foxing in margin but image quite bright and clean; a few small scuffs to uniform. Very good plus. COLAS 891.
