Binding tight and square pages clean bright and unmarked. 427 pp. Black-and-white photographs throughout. A continuation of the series begun by Joseph Battell who passed away shortly before the publication of volume three. The Morgan horse is one of the earliest horse breeds developed in the United States. Tracing back to the foundation sire Figure later named Justin Morgan after his best-known owner Morgans served many roles in 19th-century American history being used as coach horses and for harness racing as general riding animals and as cavalry horses during the American Civil War on both sides of the conflict. Morgans have influenced other major American breeds including the American Quarter Horse Tennessee Walking Horse and the Standardbred. During the 19th and 20th centuries they were exported to other countries including England where a Morgan stallion influenced the breeding of the Hackney horse. In 1907 the US Department of Agriculture established the US Morgan Horse Farm near Middlebury Vermont for the purpose of perpetuating and improving the Morgan breed; the farm was later transferred to the University of Vermont. The first breed registry was established in 1909 and since then many organizations in the US Europe and Oceania have developed. Popular children's authors including Marguerite Henry and Ellen Feld have portrayed the breed in their books; Henry's Justin Morgan Had a Horse was later made into a Disney movie. 1886réf. 63570Salinas: Salinas Index Print 1886. Rare California Horse Stud Broadside Illustrated An illustrated California stud broadside advertising the services of a stallion named Erwin Davis set to "stand at the Fair Grounds Salinas" during the upcoming season which "commences Feb. 15 and ends Aug. 15 1886." The stallion is pictured here in full stride in an attractive engraved illustration that takes up much of the upper half of the broadside. The text of the broadside begins with a lengthy description and review of Erwin Davis' impressive pedigree: "Was sired by the celebrated trotting horse 'Kentucky Hunter' he by 'Broken-leg Hunter' the sire of 'Flora Temple' of New York; grand sire 'Sorrel Hunter;' g. g. sire 'Imp. Highlander.' 'Erwin's dam was the magnificent trotting mare 'Lost Diamond'; she by Vermont Hambletonian the sire of True John Green Mountain Maid Grey Vermont and Sontag." The text goes on to list the records set by Erwin's colts: "Bay gelding Ed on Bay District course Feb. 14 1885 in 2:29¾ and since that in 2:27; Carrie F. on Stockton course in 1885 in 2:27½; Ned in 2:27 to wagon on Bay District course; Gover C. at Sacramento in 1885 in 2:25½; Ike yearling in 3:01½ and at two years old in 2:31½; Diamond with 3 months training at San Jose in 2:34." The price given is $35 for the season. The broadside is signed in type by "J.R. Davidson Proprietor." Text and illustration are enclosed within a star-studded border. Advertisements for the same Erwin Davis appear in several issues of Breeder and Sportsman published in San Francisco for the year 1883. Apparently unrecorded we find no copies on OCLC at the time of cataloguing. An attractive rare and perhaps unique California horse stud broadside. Printed on green paper mounted to stiff board. Old folds with minor splitting along folds repaired by mounting. Dampstain in lower margin not affecting text. Old manuscript annotation in red ink to upper right quadrant faded just above illustration. About very good. unknown books
réf. 5037HORSE RACING. ALS. 3pg. 8 x 9 . February 7 1833. New York NY. An autograph letter signed Eliza Colden to William P. Haskins of Troy New York. The letter regards a racetrack rental gone wrong. This is a very early mention of American racetracks since they were not in common use until after the Civil War. In part: I understand that Mr. Colden wrote yesterday to Mrs. Wells making an offer for the Course but at the time he did it he had no conception that Mr. Dey had gone over to the other party and rented the course to Burrs man Mr. Botts during the next Races for the trifling sum of $350. I feel hurt to think that while we were doing every thing in good faith to aid and assist and after having spent my money that we should be thus treated Mr. Dey not even thinking it worth while to mention the subject to either myself or Mr. Colden. Had Mr. Dey done his duty and got possession and you wished to have rented the property you might have got $1000 for it during next May Races. I write this letter without the knowledge of Mr. Colden in order if possible to prevent mischief which I fear it will be too late to prevent. He is outrageous and says that as the other party have acted treacherously and gone over too Burr he does not see why he should not make terms with Burr also Burr had made overtures to him which he has here to fore rejected with disdain as I am told but I now fear your will be the sufferers. Many early racetracks were operated by the rich to showcase their horses; they frequently appeared and quickly disappeared. Eliza Colder may have been related to Cadwallader Colden 1769-1834 the mayor of New York City from 1818 to 1821. Aaron Burr 1756-1836 was Vice President and the killer of Alexander Hamilton in a duel; later in life he served as a New York attorney. The letter is in fine condition with light toning and folds. unknown books
