1910Acquaforte e puntasecca, 1910 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra Fisher f. Dedicata dall'artista a Malcolm Salaman; iscrizione a matita in basso: "To Malcolm Salaman from the artist, San Giovanni Siena. A. Hugh Fisher". Bibliografia H. Fisher, 'Catalogue of Etchings and Drypoint by A. Hugh Fisher', 1927. Etching and drypoint, circa 1910, signed at lower left Fisher f. Dedicated by the artis to Malcolm Salaman; inscribed at the bottom: To Malcolm Salaman from the artist, San Giovanni Siena. A. Hugh Fisher". A fine impression, printed on ivory wove paper, with margins, good condition. Malcolm Charles Salaman (London 6 September 1855 – 22 January 1940) was an English author, journalist and critic. He was educated at University College School and at Owens College, Manchester. Although he had studied mechanical engineering for four years, he became a journalist, and edited two weekly papers. His critical writing was devoted chiefly to prints and to plays. From 1883 to 1894 he was dramatic and art critic for the Sunday Times, and from 1890 to 1899 was on the staff of The Graphic. He wrote regularly on prints for the art magazines The Studio and Apollo. Salaman also wrote the introductions to the 33 volume series Modern Masters of Etching published between 1925 and 1932 by The Studio, each of which contained reproductions of 12 prints by a great etcher. This series included volumes on Frank Brangwyn, Alphonse Legros, Ernest Stephen Lumsden, Malcolm Osborne and Edmund Blampied. Hugh Fisher initially dedicated himself to landscape and architectural engraving, however he was also an accomplished etcher and engraver of portraits, figure studies and animal depictions. Copy, from a niello belonged to the Durazzo collection, now lost. The nielli of the Durazzo collection were reproduced in prints by owner’s will, between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Venice - as also specified by Malaspina in his catalog of 1824 - constituting a series that was circulated and collected by the amateurs. Bartsch describes these niello prints in his volume published in 1811, a date that therefore constitutes the terminus ante quem for the execution. The composition seems to have as pendant the niello depicting St. George and the dragon

réf. 22110Vittoria Hotel Hull. 29 October 1854. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition aged and lightly creased. Folded twice. Addressed 'To the Editor of the Courant'. Having been made Recorder of Hull in 1852 Warren begins his letter from that place: 'Sir Some friend has sent to me your paper of Thursday last containing a very kindly notice on my late Charge to the Grand Jury here. - I beg to thank you for that kindness and also to express my concurrence in your observation on the important legal & Social topics to which that Charge referred.' He is sending 'as an Evidence of the Salutary effect which that “Charge” produced a copy of the “Presentment” as we call it of the Grand Jury to me in open Court – read by the Foreman.' With the chief magistrate sitting beside him Warren answered the foreman by stating that after his charge 'the Magistrates had met & had resolved forthwith to establish a “Reformatory School” for juvenile criminals.' He concludes by stating that he concurs 'ex mio corde' 'in every word of the last section of the article to which I have referred'. In a postscript he states that when he answered the foreman with the news about the reformatory school 'there began a demonstration of applause in the criminal court which I found it difficult to suppress'. Vittoria Hotel, Hull. 29 October 1854. unknown
réf. 14455Chatham. 12 March 1839. A substantial letter 3pp. foolscap 8vo. 100 lines of text. Bifolium. In very good condition on aged paper with one closed along crease line neatly repaired with archival tape. Addressed on reverse of second leaf with Chatham postmark frank and black wax seal to 'Viscount Ingestrie M:P. 2 Wilton Crescent Belgrave Square London'. An interesting document in which a distinguished Victorian naval architect makes detailed criticisms of an innovation in his field. HMS Gorgon was designed by Sir William Symonds and launched in 1837. Her direct-acting engines in which the engine's cylinders are placed under the crankshaft built by Seaward and Company were the first to be fitted in any vessel. She was scrapped in 1864. Read begins his letter: 'My Lord Nothing could exceed my astonishment at the reply or rather <> which Sir C. Adam gave in citing the Gorgon as a specimen of the success of the personal conductor of our Naval Construction. In a lithographic account privately circulated but which the Hampshire Telegraph published; it was stated for what purposes this bad & wretched failure was designed. - She was to be able to carry 10 long 32 Pr. between decks - 4 32 Prs. and 2 10 inch Bomb Cannon on the weather deck - She was to take or be able to take a regiment on board with all its equipage for a colonial voyage across the Atlantic.' He proceeds to describe the 'falling off' from these specifications commenting that 'her constructor had so little knowledge of what he was about that he was deficient in displacement at least 400 tons corresponding to a too great immersion of 3 feet about . When she left Plymouth for her first trip to St. Sebastian she drew 17 ft 3 in aft instead of her intended draft 15.6 and the Ports abaft the Paddle Boxes were only from 3 ft 3 in to 3 ft 6 in above the water!! Of course the Ports were still caulked in.' At the end of this criticism he describes the Gorgon as 'a failure'. He proceeds to 'shew how experiments are got up' concluding 'is this the way that an experiment involving a cost of 40000£ should be conducted - The engines alone of the Gorgon cost 20000£.' He continues 'Would Sir C. Adam produce the lithographic circulars of which the Gorgon was intended for and would he venture to place in contrast with it the actual performance of the ship' He gives more specifications before stating: 'The Constructor of the Gorgon ought to be called upon to explain if he can the early discrepancy between his intentions & performances. He ends by apologising for 'this rough document'. Chatham. 12 March 1839. unknown
