1832Best.-Nr. 0071301832. No Binding. Very Good. Single sheet letterpress with hand-coloring and manuscript inscription measuring approx. 70 x 170 mm. A charming early American Reward of Merit certificate issued "For Diligence and Good Behavior" and presented to Joseph Smiles in 1823. The recto features an ornate engraved design with multiple vignettes; classical allegorical figures pastoral and moralizing scenes of labor and learning and engraved portrait medallions of notable figures all hand-colored. The central title "REWARD OF MERIT" appears in bold decorative type. The verso contains the original manuscript presentation in part: "For Diligence and Good Behavior Joseph Smiles presented the Reward of Merit 1823. Joseph Smiles got from Henry John" minor spelling and phrasing variations consistent with period school inscriptions. Printed on wove paper folded as issued with expected age-toning light soilling and scattered stains; edges somewhat irregular. Manuscript remains clear and legible. Overall very good condition for this fragile form of early American educational ephemera. Reward of Merit certificates were given in early American schools to encourage moral behavior diligence and obedience reflecting early 19th-century educational values. Survivors with dated manuscript inscriptions are increasingly scarce especially in the compact and decorative format. Ships unmatted and unframed unknown
