Accompanied by a fine glossy 6�" X 7 3/4" black and white news agency photograph International News Photos a candid closeup of MacArthur in civilian garb -- overcoat silk scarf hat. Caption at bottom dates it 25 January 1955 and describes the scene as "A striking closeup of General Douglas MacArthur just before he flew from New York today to celebrate his 75th birthday in Los Angeles tomorrow. California dignitaries and a million plain citizens are expected to greet the famous soldier who is making his first visit to the city in 18 years. Part of the birthday celebration will be the unveiling of a monument in the general's honor at MacArthur Park in downtown Los Angeles." A nice letter with appropriate image. unknown

This popular Irish poet "The Book of Irish Ballads" 1846 "Irish Legends and Lyrics" 1858 "Poems" 1882 etc. was fascinated by Spanish literature and translated many of Pedro Calderon de la Barca's plays. AMS 1p 4�" X 7" London England n.y. Near fine. Faint mounting trace on verso along left edge. In light purple ink MacCarthy writes out his poem "Youth and Age" which begins: "To give the blossom and the fruit / The soft warm air that wraps them round / Oh! think how long the toilsome rot / Must live and labour 'neath the ground." Second full stanza also neatly penned followed by his full signature and address below which he notes "Written out for Mrs. Alice L. Williams Chicago." A charming example. paperback

Zusammen 8 SS. 8vo. und 90 x 110 mm. An Emilie Schaup aus der Zipfer-Brauereidynastie am 2. August: "Am 27. Juli sandte ich als Eilgut an Ihre Adresse das mir gütigst bestellte Gemälde nebst Rahmen. Ich hoffe, daß ich mir durch die Ausführung Ihre so geschätzte Zufriedenheit erworben habe. Jedenfalls war es mir ein Vergnügen, beim Schaffen der schönen Stunden zu gedenken, welche ich dort an der rauschenden See und angesichts der herrlichen Schneehäupter des Libanon verleben durfte [...]". In einem Brief vom 15. August bestätigt er Fräulein Schaup "dankend den Empfang von Mk. 820 als Ausgleich für das Gemälde 'Golf von Beirut' nebst Rahmen". Im zweiten Brief vom 15. August schreibt er: "Wie erfreut war ich, als ich gestern von einem Abstecher hierher zurückkehrend Ihre liebenswürdigen Zeilen fand, welche mir in so angenehmer Weise sagten, daß mein Gemälde Ihnen rechte Freude bereitet [...]".

Vassar College's longest-serving president was its fifth 1915-46 an effective academic administrator who was also their first secular president and helped to found Sarah Lawrence College. TNS 1p 8�" X 5�" Poughkeepsie NY 8 January 1930. Addressed to John T. Owen. Very good. Lightly age toned with inoffensive staple hole at upper left not affecting text and small chip at upper right corner. "I shall be glad to have you use the photograph of me made by Pirie MacDonald in the booklet you are preparing and you are hereby granted permission to secure this from the photographer." Boldly signed in blue with his usual "H.N. MacCracken." The noted New York portrait photographer 1867-1942 -- known as "Photographer of Men" for he only photographed males -- shot anyone who was anyone in that area for decades and MacCracken sat for him in 1924. Owen was perhaps a publicity or marketing person working up a Vassar promotional brochure. unknown

IX. 1845). - Macedo war, wie auf beiliegendem Sammlungsumschlag vermerkt, brasilianischer Gesandter. - Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot gründete 1848 den „Konstitutionell-monarchistischen Verein“; als sich die angestrebte Gründung einer patriotischen Partei nicht verwirklichen ließ, zog er sich jedoch aus der aktiven Politik zurück. Seit 1868 Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina, wurde er 1872 Vorsitzender des Komitees zur Gründung des Sophienspitals in Wien; daneben war Vivenot Direktor des Unterstützungsvereins für Witwen und Waisen des medizinischen Doktor-Collegiums.

This cartographic engineer artist and cartoonist joined the cartographic section of the Coast and Geodetic Survey after serving in World War One where he redesigned the Department of Commerce seal and innovations such as a double scale compiling system for photographic reductions to scale; in 1957 he won a competition among C & GS staff to design the agency's 150th anniversary U.S. stamp. Signed Postal Cover 6�" X 3�". Single 3-cent "Coast and Geodetic Survey 1807 - 1957" stamp at upper right. Fine. NOT a First Day Cover but simply a mint example of this stamp affixed to an unaddressed uncancelled envelope which MacEwen signs boldly in blue ballpoint at lower left. Long before Charles Atlas Jack LaLanne Arnold Schwarzenegger and Richard Simmons there was this household-name eccentric physical fitness advocate who built a business empire around it founding the magazine "Physical Culture" in 1899 that grew into a magazine publishing behemoth. A big bold signature in black ink as manly as MacFadden heavy stock 5" X 3" card n.p. n.y. Near fine. Though undated likely of 1930s vintage. Very uncommon. unknown

This well-rounded California pastor railroad man actor playwright and lecturer was a popular short story writer and novelist "Those Who Have Come Back" 1914 "Tongues of Flame" 1924 and penned the scripts for the films "Guiles of Women" 1921 starring Will Rogers and "A Pair of Hellions" 1924. TMS 1p 8�" X 11" Pacific Grove CA 1923 March 8. Near fine. Actual working draft page p. 23 from a short story titled "Mercy" which was published in the May 1923 issue of "Cosmopolitan" magazine. Typed double spaced with numerous additions deletions and corrections. Along the wide right margin vertically Macfarlane signs large and bold in full in black ink adding date and place and noting "a page from the MS of / 'Mercy' Cosmopolitan for / May 1923." Content concerns a minister named Robert N. Mason confessing a sexual crime to a friend George Fawcett during a nighttime drive through what seems suspiciously like heading north from Macfarlane's home in Pacific Grove: In part "The city of E____ enjoys a climate that has bland moments. This was one of them. It was a black velvety all-enveloping sort of night -- the very night for confidences; and the car was turned north away from the city away from the lights away north endlessly north into the open country. The minister apparently suffering the greatest distress with something upon his heart that demanded expression seemed nevertheless quite unable to utter himself." Interestingly about a year after this was signed on June 9 1924 Macfarlane bought a gun at a local gun shop said goodbye to wife and children and drove north to San Francisco where he put a bullet in his head outside the San Francisco morgue. The reason for his suicide at age 53 Diabetes. From the collection of Professor Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen requested working draft pages from authors so it's possible this manuscript leaf predates its 1923 date by quite a bit. Also present is Johannsen's original 8�" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown
