Thomas Coomans, Jan De Maeyer
Revival of Medieval Illumination. Renaissance de l'enluminure medievale Nineteenth-Century Belgium Manuscripts and Illuminations from a European Perspective.
Hardback, ill. 336pp. new condition ISBN 9789058675910. The art of illumination, usually associated with the Middle Ages, experienced a spectacular revival in nineteenth-century Western Europe. This completely different context gave the illuminations another import. The output of the lay and religious workshops reveals a great artistic, stylistic, technical and typological diversity. The works illuminated go far beyond the world of exceptional and precious manuscripts and include many occasional documents, as well as golden books, devotional images, etc. Richly illustrated with unpublished masterworks, the present volume offers an overview of the important revival of medieval illumination. The fifteen authors do not limit their approach to the traditional questions of art history. Rather, they explore the historical, socio-cultural, ideological and religious components of the revival, which changed according to time and country, in order to understand the evolution and success of the art of illumination in the long nineteenth century.

THUE KRETSCHMER, Marek
REWRITING ROMAN HISTORY IN THE MIDDLE AGES. THE 'HISTORIA ROMANA' AND THE MANUSCRIPT BAMBERG, HIST. 3
Bound, illustrated red cloth, 165 x 245mm., 428pp. ISBN 978900415710. The Historia Romana was the most popular work on Roman history in the Middle Ages. A highly interesting aspect of its transmission and reception are its many redactions which bear witness to the continuous development of the text in line with changing historical contexts. This study presents the very first classification of such rewritings, and produces new insights into historiographical discourse in the Middle Ages. Drawing on an analysis of the paraphrase contained in the manuscript Bamberg Hist. 3, which is edited here for the first time, the author offers numerous examples of textual ? read moretransformations of language, style and ideology, all of which give us a clearer picture of textual fluidity in medieval historiography. Perfect condtion.
