‎Rossellini Roberto director; Ingrid Bergman starring‎

‎Jeanne au bucher Giovanna d'Arco al rogo Original French Film Program‎

‎Rome: Produzioni Cinematografiche Associate 1954. Original French program for the rarely seen 1954 Italian / French coproduction "Giovanni d'Arco al rogo" here under the French titled "Jeanne au bucher." Presumably programs were made for both French and Italian audiences. In a rather bold film experiment for its time Rossellini filmed a French stage production of the Joan of Arc story with an Italian cast and actress Ingrid Bergman as Joan in a strange reprisal of the character she played in the 1948 US film directed by Victor Fleming. Rossellini intended the film to transcend its stage trappings through careful use of the camera and careful juxtaposition of silence with original music by modernist composer Arthur Honegger. Some screenings were reportedly preceded by footage of the applauding opera house audience and a smiling Bergman in her dressing room though the film has rarely seen the light of a repertory house since its original release owing perhaps to the fact that Rossellini used Eastmancolor film stock that faded precipitously over time. The film is available in Japan on DVD but has yet to be released to English-speaking countries. 10.75 x 8.5 inches. Oblong card wrappers in full color saddle-stitched with a green cloth tassle 8 pages on thick two-color stock. Near Fine. Produzioni Cinematografiche Associate unknown‎

‎Journey to Italy Viaggio in Italia Original photograph of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini from the set of the 1954 film‎

Mimeo snipe dated May 17 1953 "International News Photos" and "Return to: Chronicle Files" stamps on verso. The International News Photos snipe addresses the movie as "New Wine." While we could not verify that working title Rossellini and co-screenwriter Vitaliano Brancati had drawn on a script by Antonio Pietrangeli entitled "New Vine" for "Journey to Italy" and was likely an error by the news agency. Loosely based on the 1934 novel "Duo" by Colette. An English couple Alex George Sanders and Katherine Joyce Bergman eight years married travel to Italy to sell a villa inherited from Alex's uncle. Along the drive and during their stay at the villa they come to the realization they really don't know one another and have little desire to spend time together. This was the last of Rotha's full-length documentaries and was initially undertaken as a cautionary means to inform younger Germans about the origins of Nazism. It set a precedent for the treatment of the subject and its release under this title and translations thereof set against a background of a skull and a city and a swastika in flames as well as under the less emotive "THE LIFE OF ." and its variants suggests parallel marketing campaigns aimed at two different audiences.
