‎Ancient Theaters of Anatolia‎

‎
The text is by R.R.R Smith Lincoln Professor of Classical Archaeology and Art at Oxford University and Director of the Aphrodisias Excavations in Turkey. The photography is by Ahmet Ertug. Many of the extraordinary images were photographed with an 8 x 10 inch large-format camera and show these well-preserved theatres in exceptional detail. The book starts with an introduction on the theatre in classical antiquity and then describes sixteen outstanding theatres individually. This is probably the first time that such combined high-level academic and photographic documentation has been devoted to the extraordinary legacy of theatre building in Anatolia. The book is 205 pages long in landscape format with a page size of 33 x 46 cm and 174 colour plates showing both details and panoramic views. Striking photographs of many of the high-quality statues and friezes that decorated the theatres are also included in the book. ANCIENT THEATERS OF ANATOLIA By the second century AD at the height of the long peace enforced by Rome most self-respecting ancient cities in the Mediterranean region had a theatre building. Most of the theatres presented in this book belong to or were re-conditioned in this period. Most survive in their second-century form but have long archaeological histories of re-design and addition that stretch back to the hellenistic period. Theatres were among the largest most imposing structures in ancient cities. Their capacity varied greatly from 2000 to 20000 but most boasted a tall monumental stage-building that reared up from the surrounding cityscape – with austere masonry on the outside and majestic tiers of columns inside. Many are astonishingly well-preserved. 'Theatre' has the double sense of both an institution and a building. Indeed drama was a developed practice long before it had the building form we know and recognise as a theatre. Drama grew out of choral performance at religious festivals in honour of Dionysos and evolved into the exciting new medium of staged tragedy and comedy. Dramatic plays soon came to share the theatre first with the citizen assembly and then under the Roman empire with arena games – the highly popular gladiator combats and wild-beast hunts mounted in honour of the emperor. Theatre building underwent a long evolution from an irregular hillside auditorium to a proper architectural design in the Greek period and then to a new fully integrated form in the Roman period. The interplay of traditional hellenistic design and new Roman design was one of the main aspects of theatre building in Anatolia in the first and second centuries AD. Many of the theatres in this book often those in more remote locations Sagalassos Selge and Termessos remained as they had been left at the end of antiquity – unoccupied with collapsed stage building and well-preserved auditorium partly covered only by vegetation and fallen masonry. They present remarkable ruinscapes that are vivid testimony to antiquity's deep-rooted theatre culture and to the great durability of ancient building techniques. ROMAN ANATOLIA The theatre remained one of the most vibrant institutions of the eastern provinces under the Roman empire especially in the prosperous cities of western Anatolia. More than 100 ancient theatres are known within modern Turkey. Their distribution follows the pattern of urbanism in the Roman period. Most are found in the cities of the Aegean and south coast and the best preserved are in the wealthy Roman provinces of Asia and Lycia-Pamphylia. The theatre had different trajectories and building histories through the first and second centuries AD in response to Roman design changing functions and intercity competition. Some cities with well-designed hellenistic theatres maintained them with only modest changes usually to the stage building. The theatres of Priene and Pergamon are good examples.
Ahmet Ertug hardcover‎

‎ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH of New York City Opera's director JULIUS RUDEL at the Helm INSCRIBED to his friend Manhattan City Center Producer & Director JEAN DALRYMPLE SIGNED BY RUDEL.‎

‎New York August 1966. 1966. Very good. - A bold 10 inch high by 8 inch wide glossy black & white gelatin print photograph of New York City Opera's director Julius Rudel baton in hand as he leads a rehearsal of the orchestra. Casually attired Rudel is protrayed in profile from the hips up holding the baton in his right hand with his raised arm framing the top of the image. The podium is in the foreground at right with the orchestra glimpsed in the background. Inscribed "To Jean D. 'Impressario extraordinary' with fond memories of our collaborations. As ever Julius Rudel August 1966". The first letter of his name is very slightly smudged. The corners and edges are slightly creased with some minor wear to the edges. A strip of masking tape adheres to the top of the verso. There are penciled annotations a number in red ink and a stamped number on the verso. Very good.
Julius Rudel 1921-2014 was the longtime director and principal conductor of the New York City Opera New York's second largest Opera House. During his tenure from 1957 to 1979 the New York City Opera played a significant role in encouraging new talent producing dozens of new operas and fostering singing careers. Beverly Sills Placido Domingo and many others are among those whose careers were nurtured by the company. Born in Vienna Rudel immigrated to the U.S. when Austria was annexed by Germany. Starting as a rehearsal pianist with the New York City Opera company he made his conducting debut with Strauss's "The Gypsy Baron" in 1944. Upon taking the helm Rudel dove right in by scheduling 3 seasons of exclusively American operas including Marc Blitzstein's "Regina" based on Hellman's "The Little Foxes" Bernstein's "Trouble in Tahiti" Carlos Floyd's "Susannah" and Hugo Weisgall's "Six Characters in Search of an Author". In 1966 the company moved to Lincoln Center where Rudel chose to conduct Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera's "Don Rodrigo" starring Domingo. Burdened by administrative duties Rudel went on to become music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic where he could again steep himself in music without the all-consuming demands of administrative work. Throughout his long career Rudel also served as the inaugural artistic director of the Kennedy Center and was also involved with the Wolf Trap Festival the Caramoor Festival and the Cincinnati May Festival. In 2013 Rudel co-wrote his musical memoirs with Rebecca Paller "Julius Rudel Looks Back on a Life in Music".

The recipient Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Cary Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jose Iturbi Andr Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.
[New York], August, 1966.‎

‎Hollywood: Paramount Pictures 1933. Final Script for the 1934 pre-Code film musical "Bolero" directed by Wesley Ruggles written for the screen by Horace Jackson Kubec Glasmon Carey Wilson and Ruth Ridenour and starring George Raft and Carole Lombard. A stylish Paramount musical that unlike so many others from its time came with a great storyline. George Raft rises from coal mine laborer to be a top dancer in pre-Great War Europe. While weaving his way through romantic entanglements including a fling with Sally Rand who performs her famous fan dance here he secures his own nightclub at which point he meets the real love of his life Carole Lombard after asking her to audition in her underwear in his hotel room. A pre-Code gem that seems almost to have been designed to push the censors buttons simultaneously one of the raciest and moodiest "A" musicals produced by this studio. Tall self-wrappers as issued stamped FILE COPY and RETURN TO SCRIPT DEPT. / PARAMOUNT PICTURES INC. on the front wrapper rubber-stamped production No. 171 and dated November 8 1933. ‎Hollywood: Paramount Pictures 1932. First Draft script for the 1932 pre-Code film though it is what would later be known as a revised shooting script as it was a rewrite issued during shooting. AFI Catalog provides some context around the October 20 1932 date on the script revealing a somewhat troubled production that resulted in a fine film: "On 23 Sep 1932 HR announced that the script was being rewritten. According to a HR news item on 4 Oct 1932 Lowell Sherman walked off the set after a pay dispute and was replaced by Wesley Ruggles. Hopkins quit the production in early Nov 1932 claiming the role was not suitable for her. Gable was on loan from M-G-M for this film. Gable and Lombard were married in 1939. This was their only co-starring film." Based on the best selling novel "No Bed of Her Own" by Val Lewton. Gable plays a card cheat who has to go on the lam to avoid a pesky cop. While hiding out he meets lonely but somewhat wild librarian Lombard. The two get married after Lombard wins a coin flip and they move back to the city where Gable continues his grifting ways unbeknownst to his new wife. Salmon self wrappers rubber-stamped copy No. 1278 and MASTER FILE dated October 20 1932 with credits for story writers Goulding and Glazer screenwriter Watkins and continuity writer Anges Brand Leahy. Brief holograph annotations on the front wrapper mostly related to filing. Title page integral with front wrapper. PAGES leaves with last page of text numbered 2 the second page of a summary. Other films in his "Gothic" period include "Lorna" 1964 "Mudhoney" 1965 and the epic and legendary "Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! " 1965. "Fanny Hill" 1964 snuck in right after "Lorna" although that film is generally left out of the "Gothic" period.

"Motorpsycho!" was written by James Griffith who starred as the Preacher narrator in "Lorna" and the underrated Hal Hopper another Meyer regular. ‎Los Angeles: Pad-Ram Enterprises 1961. Original pressbooks two variants for 1961 re-releases of the 1959 film. Featured are the two most commonly seen layouts used for publicity: the full-color illustrated "hat" variant and the other with Mr. Teas surrounded by a bevy of well-developed women the female leads of the film from left to right: Ann Peters Michele Roberts Dawn Danielle and Marilyn Wesley.

The story finds the shy Mr. Teas played by William Ellis Teas a door-to-door dental appliance salesman who has a chemical reaction with an anesthetic that allows him to have X-ray vision as in "seeing through women's clothes." He also overcomes all of his inhibitions leading to ribald encounters with his dental nurse his therapist his secretary a girl in a bar etc.

Russ Meyer's first feature produced by Pad-Ram Enterprises a monogram using the initials of director Russell Albion Meyer and producer Peter A. DeCenzie and the film that basically launched the lighthearted "nudie" pictures of the early 1960s. The film was immediately touted as "ribald" and "Frenchy" with regard to the "genuinely sexy sequences with generous expanses of attractive flesh" that used to be seen strictly in foreign films. At a time when Hollywood moguls were losing audiences to the comfort of in-home cinema through television Meyer and DeCenzie who spent years on the burlesque and night club circuits released an independent naturally sexy endeavor in the tradition of the great Chaplin films. The bigger productions companies would never have made a film as far overboard on sex.

For his debut Russ Meyer did even more of the crew work than usual shooting in four days during the spring of 1958 with a budget of $24000 ultimately making over $1.5 million worldwide. The film was marketed as a "nudist" film with a "French" sensibility but exhibited all the distinctive traits for which Meyer would soon become known including large bosoms insane plots a somewhat feminist perspective campy dialogue and guerilla cinematography.

Shot on location in various California destinations including Malibu Lagoon State Beach. Included are 4 stills from the US release and 4 stills from the UK release under the title "Mr. Teas and His Playthings." From a cursory glance one can immediately see the differences with regard to nudity paid by both US and UK publicists the UK stills decidedly more liberal with regard to the "forbidden flesh."

The US stills were taken directly from scenes of the film and the UK stills appear to be from either a deleted scene or a mock setup designed for foreign publicity with Mr. Teas seen in a bathhouse with the "Buxom Bath House Beauties" Baby Dahl Chicky Fricase Frenchie Tost Teri Clawthe that were not seen in the final cut. The UK stills purport "Monstrous Murder!" and "Sizzling Suspense!" taglines however the final cut features neither murder nor suspense.

The story finds the shy Mr. Teas played by William Ellis Teas a door-to-door dental appliance salesman who has a chemical reaction with an anesthetic that allows him to have X-ray vision as in "seeing through women's clothes." ‎Madrid Spain: RM Films International 1986. Original Spanish one-sheet poster for the 1986 release of the 1975 US film. Features buxom Christy Hartburg who starred as SuperLorna. Hartburg along with Kitten Natividad and Uschi Digard has become one of the more recognizable faces of Russ Meyer filmdom even though this was her only film.

Clint Pitts operates a small-town gas station where he is constantly harassed by his wife SuperAngel Eubank. On one occasion the police are called and Harry Napier arrives and is promptly seduced by SuperAngel however his impotence becomes him. Stricken by SuperAngel's taunts Harry murders her in a rather gruesome bathtub scene and pins the act on Clint. On the lam Clint meets a farmer with a heyper-sexual Austrian mail-order bride named SuperSoul Digard. In keeping with director Meyer's powerful female roles SuperSoul rapes Clint a few times notably in a barn where the farmer discovers his wife's indiscretions. Clint meets up with SuperVixen Eubank an inexplicable reincarnation of SuperAngel and the two fall in love. Harry is however still hot on the trail.

Meyer's successful return to independent filmmaking after the big-budget "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" 1970 and the unfortunate films "The Seven Minutes" 1971 and "Black Snake" 1973. Arguably the most entertaining Meyer project with all the trademarks present: strong sexual women impotent men and healthy doses of sex violence and nudity with a nod to the desert violence of Italian Euro Westerns of the 1960s.

Shot on location in Arizona California and New Mexico.

27 x 41 inches folded as issued. The first Meyer film to feature full frontal male nudity a rarity even in sexploitation films at the time and quite the introduction to soon-to-be Meyer's regular Charles Napier.

Meyer shot several new sequences late in production about a quarter of the film's runtime either to replace footage lost by a photo lab or because an actress left the shoot early the reason is disputed. The new sequences unrelated to the original ones give the film an almost surreal quality leading Roger Ebert to call it "possibly the only narrative film ever made without a narrative."

The film was one of the most successful of Meyer's career leading him to return to and refine this style in subsequent films peaking with Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens in 1979.

47 x 63 inches folded as issued. ‎Boy Friend The Original Polish poster for the 1971 film‎

‎Poland: ZGK 1973. Original Polish A1 poster circa 1973 for the 1971 British-American film. Artwork by Jakub Erol. Hal Erickson: "The Boy Friend" began life as Sandy Wilson's small-scale pastiche of British musical comedies of the 1920s. When the play was brought to America in 1954 its star was the teenage Julie Andrews. Because the musical required a minimum of sets props and costumes it became a favorite of amateur theater groups throughout the world. But director Ken Russell notorious for his onscreen excesses abandoned the film's simplicity fashioning a humongous parody of the Busby Berkeley film musicals of the 1930s staged on a scale that made Berkeley seem stylistically modest. Fashion model Twiggy plays Polly Browne an aspiring musical comedy star working as stage manager of a production. She is transformed into a star when she replaces leading lady Rita Monroe Glenda Jackson unbilled who twists her ankle seconds before the curtain goes up. Christopher Gable who plays Polly's on-stage leading man also choreographed the lavish musical numbers. 23 x 33 inches. Faint stains to one edge and a couple of short closed tears. ZGK unknown‎
