At 200 pages this draft is 36 pages longer than the longest of the three we have encountered meaning almost certainly that it is a First Draft or very close.<br/><br/>The plot of William Friedkin's suspense thriller originated with the same Georges Arnaud novel that inspired Henri-Georges Clouzot's French suspense classic "The Wages of Fear" 1953. Roy Scheider Bruno Cremer Francisco Rabal and Amidou play four men who for various reasons cannot return to their own countries. They end up in a dismal South American town where an American oil company is seeking out courageous drivers willing to haul nitroglycerin over 200 miles of treacherous terrain. The four stateless men have nothing to lose and besides they'll be paid $10000 apiece and be granted legal citizenship if they survive. The suspense is almost unbearable at times even outdistancing the tension level of "The Wages of Fear" in certain scenes in particular a famous set piece wherein one of the trucks must cross a rope bridge in the middle of the Amazon-and in the middle of a monsoon. Based on the true story of psychopathic serial killer Hans Beckert nicknamed the "Vampire of Dusseldorf" here played by Peter Lorre. A brilliant image from this crime thriller classic in which the search is on for Lorre. <br/><br/>Lang's first sound film Lorre's breakthrough role and the film Lang considered to be his masterpiece-an assertion that has found much agreement since. The mood atmosphere and lighting foreshadow film noir and Lang's use of sound though primitive technologically still makes a powerful psychological impact. <br/><br/>So strongly regarded was the film that MGM producer Irving Thalberg assembled his writers and directors for a screening and told them they needed to be making films of this caliber. Banned in Germany in 1934 when the Nazis came into power at which point Lorre and Lang both of partial Jewish ancestry fled the country. The expressionistic art direction visible here the uncredited work of Edgar G. Ulmer would also serve as the basis of Ulmer's later directorial work in Hollywood where he would make some of the most creative and classic noir-style films. Previously filmed in 1921 as the silent film "The Indian Tomb" directed by Joe May and starring Conrad Veidt and Mia May with a screenplay written by von Harbou and Lang who was originally slated to direct and in 1938 as the German film "Der Tiger von Eschnapur" directed by Richard Eichberg starring Philip Dorn and La Jana. Lang returned to the material some forty years later and divided the story into two films to avoid the lengthy three and a half hour running time of the original silent film.<br/><br/>A German architect travels to the remote Indian city of Eschnapur to oversee work being done at the behest of the Maharajah and falls in love with a beautiful temple dancer who the Maharajah also loves.<br/><br/>Set in India shot on location in Berlin Germany and Udaipur India. <br/><br/>9 x 7 inches. Intended for Ingrid Bergman the project was called off after four weeks of work supposedly because Bergman had decided to take on a different project. In truth there was also a fair bit of conflict between Lang and Selznick and the contract ultimately led to no produced work. <br/><br/>A story set on "Gray Island" just after WWII involving a rich art collector Stefan Korvath and his blind wife Nina and the roaming painter Chris Bartlett who falls in love Nina. <br/><br/>Salmon titled wrappers noted as 1st Draft Shooting Script and "incomplete" on the front wrapper dated 1/3/45 and 2/28/45 with a credit for screenwriter Dratler. 69 leaves with last page of text numbered 69. Original program for the London premiere of the film on March 21st 1927 at the Marble Arch Pavilion preceded in English by the US release earlier that month but with different title cards. Director Lang's expressionist masterpiece based on the novel and written for the screen by then-wife von Harbou one of the most enduring and influential films of the silent era. <br/><br/>In addition to the normal synopsis photos and quotes from the actors the program presents pieces on the film's groundbreaking special effects and camerawork and most interestingly a side-by-side comparison of a portion of the film script with von Harbou's novel published the previous year. Any original paper relating to "Metropolis" is scarce with a 2012 post in Peter Harrington's blog ranking this program among the most difficult items. <br/><br/>Very Good plus in stapled wrappers.
