Bien que diffusée confidentiellement, l'oeuvre d'Hemsterhuis exerça une influence majeure sur ses contemporains: Diderot, qui le fréquenta et le commenta, Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi dont la 'Lettre à M Hemsterhuis' sur Spinoza (1784) est insérée pour la première fois dans cette édition, mais aussi Herder, Goethe, Hölderlin, Novalis et Schlegel.
