Ladies' Year Book: 1921 [with diary entries]
Adele Margate; Charles Letts
London: Charles Letts 1921. Hardcover. Very Good. pp 64; page/week. A young London mother's diary for 1921. Adele Margate's ownership signature appears on the first endpaper above the adverts: she has made around 150 short diary entries in the printed grid which allows one page per week. She reveals herself as a married woman living in the vicinity of Richmond in south west London. At least two of her children have died and are remembered on their birthdays: 'Took up some flowers to dear little Baby. She has been dead four years tomorrow.' This causes Adele still further anxiety when she records that 'Peter is better but baby much worse. The doctor says he has bronchial pneumonia. Temp v high.' There are trips into London apparently to meet her husband: 'Went up to Town met Lew and we had dinner at Hatchets Piccadilly with Mrs Cooper and Margery and went on to see 'Sunday' by Barclays Bank Amateurs.' There are occasional political comments as on May 17th: 'The coal strike settlement as far off as ever. No coal except 1cwt as week to be 80f' with monthly housekeeping accounts and frequent evidence of social activity and tennis matches. An intimate picture of post-war life among the London professional classes. Very Good Please contact Christian White Rare Books Ltd for more information or images of this item 1921 Charles Letts hardcover

The Travels of the Abbé Carré in India and the Near East 1672 to 1674. Volume III: Return Journey to France with an account of the Sicilian revolt against Spanish rule at Messina Second Series No. XCVII
London: The Hakluyt Society 1948. First edition. Hardcover. g to vg. Quarto. XXIII 1 677-984pp. Uncut and unopened copy! Original gilt- and blind-stamped blue cloth with gold lettering on spine. Frontispiece. This third volume tells the story of the Abbé's journey back to France with dispatches sent by de la Haye the French Viceroy from St. Thomé. His spirit of adventure and love of travel for its own sake are clearly evinced. He might have reached France more easily and quickly by taking his passage in the 'Soleil d'Orient' which left Surat on January 4 and arrived at La Rochelle on July 12 1674; but in spite of his troublesome experiences in the Mediterranean the Syrian Desert and the Persian Gulf on his outward journey he preferred to return from Surat by the same route in reverse. As a result this part of the Journal gains immensely in interest. Contents: Introduction; Voyage from Madras to Bombay; Journey from Bombay to Tarafur; Journey to Daman and Surat; Carré's stay at Surat; Voyage from Surat to Bandar Arras; Journey from Bandar Arras to Basra; Journey from Basra to Aleppo; Journey from Aleppo to Messina; The revolution at Messina; Journey from Messina to Marseilles; Index. This volume is complete with all its plates and folded maps. Minor staining on front cover. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed. Binding in overall good to good interior in very good condition.
