John Dryden 1631 - 1700 was an influential English poet literary critic translator and playwright who dominated the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. Walter Scott called him "Glorious John."Â He was made Poet Laureate in 1668. George Gilfillan 1813 - 1878 was a Scottish author and poet. He was one of the spasmodic poets and an editor and commentator of earlier British poetry. Â In calf bindings. Externally generally smart but with slight wear to extremities slight rubbing and marks to boards and slight fading to spines. With an ink inscription dated 1863 to front blank of volume one. With its original calf boards marbled edging spectacular endpapers and broad clear margins this lovely and easily legibile compendium is sure to impress. Rebound in calf using old calf boards. Generally smart lightly rubbed in places. Lovely custard colour with gilt bordering and colourful marbled edging. Slight wear to corners of boards.
