‎Het leven van de auteur en geleerde Helene Nolthenius stond in het teken van grote thema's: muziek, religie, Italie, middeleeuwen. Als hoogleraar in de muziekgeschiedenis van de oudheid en de middeleeuwen aan de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht trok zij aandacht door de rol die zij toekende aan verbeeldingskracht in historisch onderzoek, waarmee zij vooruitliep op de moderne cultuurwetenschap. Als auteur van historische romans muntte zij uit door de precisie waarmee zij gegevens verwerkte. Haar studies van het Duecento, het Gregoriaans en Franciscus van Assisi kregen enorme verbreiding. In Rede en vervoering wordt aandacht besteedt aan de plaats die Nolthenius innam binnen een erudiete Nederlandse elite, die stand hield totdat de universiteit definitief in de greep raakte van 'kennisproductie'. In deze elite, wortelend in de vooroorlogse tijd, nam zij als flamboyante vrouwelijke geleerde een eenzame plaats in. Zij zocht een verheven wereld 'weg van hier', maar wist zich getemperd door de rationaliteit die ze zichzelf oplegde. Verder worden in dit boek persoonlijke ontwikkelingen belicht, zowel voor als na haar werkzame leven.‎

Il est consacre a l'age de la transition de la litterature romaine a la litterature chretienne au IIe et IIIe s. apres J.-C. Rome reste encore la capitale et la metropole culturelles, mais deja se fait sentir a nouveau, dans le cadre du bilinguisme, l'influence de la langue et de la litterature grecques. Des developpements litteraire et religieux particuliers s'esquissent ici et la dans l'empire, en particulier en Afrique. A cote de la litterature technique des grammairiens et des antiquaires, on trouve les textes juridiques classiques (Paulus par ex. et Ulpien) qui seront determinants pour la suite. En complement et en contraste avec les ouvrages techniques, surgit la litterature chretienne : traduction de la Bible, Actes de martyrs, apologetique (Tertullien, Minucius Felix), theologie (Novatien et Cyprien), poesie (Commodien). An introduction and an index are included. Appendices provide the text of five chapters 'missing' from this manuscript, along with several pertinent charters from Agen and a fuller description of the Livre juratoire by Professor M. The Costume emphasizes the power of the local city council, which often seems to override that of the local count. ‎When viewed retrospectively, the period between the eleventh and the fifteenth centuries was a phase of European history that was characterized by a radical and fundamental media transformation. Before this time, the vast majority of the population had never encountered the written word in their day-to-day activities. From the beginning of the second millennium, however, texts began to appear in, and influence, almost every sphere of human life. Medieval written texts were subject to revision, copying, embellishments, and deletions; they were read silently and aloud, and they were recited in a variety of contexts. This CD-ROM and book, Transforming the Medieval World, presents these changes dynamically by linking texts and images from this period, and by providing detailed commentaries on each of them. The multimedia environment offered on the CD visualizes these textual transformations and illustrates the adaptability and dynamism of writing and its reception. The uses of writing in this early phase of intensive European literacy are analysed in eleven separate multimedia presentations, which are almost all based on research carried out by the Special Research Unit (SFB) between 1986 and 1999. The CD also contains an anthology of important essays, which provide the user with further reading materials, as well as a general bibliography.
