The work was explicitly intended as a concise and accurate handbook for travellers. It begins with a 'Historical Sketch' which charts the city's past all the way from ancient times. The rest of the work is an eclectic mix of topographical description and general information. It provides for example tables of economic and maritime statistics in the hope that they may prove interesting to the reader. This second edition contains ten illustrations of famous landmarks such as the Belem Tower and Theatre of Queen Mary II. Condition: In quarter morocco with gilt detailing on the spine. Externally with some rubbing to thespine. The paper of the boards is a little frayed at the extremitiesand somewhat torn on the rear board. They also show general shelfware. The joints are a little tender but still reasonably firm. Generally cleanand bright throughout with a little light foxing to the first few pages. Generally firmly bound. Overall: GOOD. Ascarce transcript of the speech of Lord Chief Baron Atkinsto the new Lord Mayor of London Sir William Ashhurst expressing his faith in the newly appointed mayor. Sir William Ashhurst or Ashurst 26 April 1647 12 January 1720 was an English banker Sheriff of London Lord Mayor of London and Member of Parliament. A Whig he represented the City of London in Parliament for three separate periods between 1689 and 1710; he was generally regarded as one of the Country Whigs but voted with the Court Whigs against the Disbanding Bill in 1698-9. Condition: Disbound folio. without A1 and E2 but text is complete. The pages are dusted and mildly age-toned as expected of a book this age. Overall: GOOD though disbound. London - R. The Lords Protest November 18 1740
ONT> 1741 Book. GOOD though disb. Hardcover. An uncommon political pamphlet dating from the mid-Eighteenth Century. Detailing the protest of The House of Lords of 1742 the volume also contains a list of the Lords who voted for and against the removal of Robert Walpole in light of the alleged rigging of the Chippenham by-election and subsequent motion of no confidence against him. Condition: Disbound with both boards missing. Externally the title and back pages are creased and marked. The remnants of the backstrip are also heavily worn. Internally several pages are partially detached although the pages are generally firmly bound aside from this and are bright and clean throughout aside from the odd spot.
