Anon. Robert Manning
Modern Controversy: Or a Plain and Rational Account of the Catholick Faith in Three Parts. I. Of General Controversies. II. Of Particular Controversies. III. Of Lesser Controversies. With a Preface and Appendix
s.n. Thomas Meighan. Hardcover. B00M74ZDZE 1720 first edition n.p. Thomas Meighan London 4 1/2 x 7 1/8 inches tall light gray paper-covered boards over blue cloth spine printed paper title label to spine 26 204 lxviii 1 pp. Title page a bit soiled. Minor staining to the top margin of the first few pages. Otherwise a very good copy of a scarce work. Association copy: Armorial bookplate of Joseph Gillow to front free-endpaper and signed note by Gillow on the front pastedown identifying the author of this anonymous work as Fr. Robert Manning and referring to his entry on Manning in Gillow's monumental work the Biographical and Bibliographical Dictionary of the English Catholics 5 vols 1885-1902. Gillow 1850-1921 was an English Roman Catholic antiquary and bio-bibliographer referred to by Thomas Bridgett in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as 'the Plutarch of the English Catholics.' The English Short Title Catalog No. T59201 locates copies of this work at only five American institutions: Univ. of Notre Dame Univ. of Pennsylvania UCLA St. Louis University and Perkins School of Theology at SMU. ~H~ The author of this anonymous work Robert Manning 1655-1731 was an English Roman Catholic priest and controversialist. Born to an English mother and Dutch father Manning entered the English College Douai in 1668 and later taught humanities and philosophy there. Ordained a priest in 1690 he was sent to the English mission in 1692 becoming chaplain to Lord Petre and other members of the Petre family at Ingatestone Hall. Stylish learned and dialectically convincing Manning produced a string of polemical works that rank him as one of the leading figures in that silver age of English Catholic controversial writing. Michael Mullett ed. 'English Catholicism 1680-1830' Vol. 1 pp. 289-90. In his preface to this work Manning refers to the anonymous tract entitled 'A Protestant's Resolution Showing His Reasons Why He Will Not be a Papist Directed to the Meanest Capacity.' This tract was frequently reprinted the sixth edition London 1684. The end of the title to this work by Manning reads: 'With a preface and appendix in vindication of Catholick morals from the old calumnies faithfully collected in a libel entitled A Protestant's resolution &c.' The publisher of this edition Thomas Meighan is sometimes referred to as the 'father of Catholic booksellers in 18th century London' working during a time when it was most impolitic to be a Catholic there let alone a Catholic publisher and bookseller. His shop was at the northern end of Drury Lane in the parish of St. Giles-in-the-Fields. He can be found in business there as early as September 13 1715 when Viscount Townshend Secretary of State for the Northern Department issued instructions for the interception of mail destined to 'Mr. Mahon's a bookseller near the Crown tavern in Drury Lane.' Advertisements Meighan published in 1715 and 1717 display a wide range of Catholic books. Not content with selling he also became what we would call nowadays a publisher that is one who acted as a catalyst and helped authors to get their books printed and sold and as early as 1715 we find a book with 'sold by Thomas Meighan' in the imprint. Usually however the restrictions on English Catholics prevented such a public display and most Catholic works appeared anonymously often with false imprints so that it is impossible to identify the printer much less ascertain which bookseller sold the work. In 1726 when the government decided to seize all copies of Robert Manning's newly printed 'England's Conversion and Reformation Compared' the warrants were issued only against Meighan implying that the book was on sale at his shop alone. . Very Good. 1720. First Edition. s.n. (Thomas Meighan) hardcover

A Panoramic View From Bunker Hill Monument
Boston MA: Luther Stevens c.1848. LARGE FOLD-OUT. Octavo 24 x 18cm pp. 16; 1 panoramic fold-out. Bound in publisher's dark green card boards cloth spine Victorian lettering and presentation of publisher's details printed in black to front cover matching decorative border to rear. Some discolouration to front board and noticeable edgewear age toned throughout. Very Good. The famous "Battle of Bunker Hill" fought on June 17 1775 actually took place on Breed's Hill the site of the existing Bunker Hill Monument. This giant granite obelisk marks the site of the first major battle of the American Revolution. The Battle of Bunker Hill pitted a newly-formed and inexperienced colonial army against the more highly trained and better-equipped British. Although the British Army ultimately prevailed in the battle the colonists greatly surprised the British by repelling two major assaults and inflicting great casualties; the colonists lost between 400 and 600 combined casualties including popular patriot leader and newly-elected Major-General Dr. Joseph Warren who was killed during the third and final assault. The first monument on the site was an 18-foot wooden pillar with a gilt urn erected in 1794 by King Solomon's Lodge of Masons to honour fallen patriot and mason Dr. Joseph Warren. In 1823 a group of prominent citizens formed the "Bunker Hill Monument Association" to construct a more permanent and significant monument to commemorate the famous battle. The existing monument was finally completed in 1842. nps.gov This volume includes a phenomenally detailed and attractive engraving of the view from the Bunker Hill Monument shortly after the current incarnation opened produced by James Smillie. Engraving folds out at rear of text and includes a list of important sites and institutions. Boston, MA: Luther Stevens, c.1848 unknown

TRUE BLUE weekly magazine was published for boys just prior to the turn of the 19th century & featured one complete & patriotic adventure story per issue set. Intended to celebrate Britain 's glorious national past in a creative range of historical periods each issue had a full colour illustrated themed wrapper with black & white drawings inside. Each issue generally ran 32 pages. Extremely popular in their day these junior magazines had a lengthy run waning only as alternative forms of entertainments gradually took over their audience's attention. Penny Dreadful Dime Novels were the American version was a term applied to nineteenth century British fiction publications usually lurid serial stories appearing in parts over a number of weeks each part costing a penny. The term however soon came to encompass a variety of publications that featured cheap sensational fiction such as story papers and booklet "libraries." The Penny Dreadfuls were printed on cheap pulp paper and were aimed primarily at teenage boys from the working class though there is some evidence that many girls read them as well. Penny Parts The penny part stories got underway in the 1830s originally as a cheaper alternative for the working class adults but by the 1850s the serial stories were aimed exclusively at teenagers. The stories themselves were reprints or sometimes rewrites of Gothic thrillers such as The Monk or The Castle of Otranto as well as new stories about famous criminals. Some of the most famous of these penny part stories were The String of Pearls which ostensibly introduced Sweeney Todd The Mysteries of London inspired by the French serial The Mysteries of Paris and Varney the Vampire. Highwaymen were popular heroes. Black Bess or the Knight of the Road outlining the largely imaginary exploits of real-life highwayman Dick Turpin continued for 254 episodes. Working class boys who could not afford a penny a week often formed clubs that would share the cost passing the flimsy booklets from reader to reader. Other enterprising youngsters would collect a number of consecutive parts then rent the volume out to friends. Penny Dreadfuls In 1866 Boys of England was introduced as a new type of publication an eight page magazine that featured serial stories as well as articles and shorts of interests. It was printed on the same cheap paper though sporting a larger format than the penny parts. Numerous competitors quickly followed with such titles as Boys Leisure Hour Boys Standard Young Men of Great Britain etc. As the price and quality of fiction was the same these storypapers also fell under the general definition of Penny Dreadfuls also known as Penny Bloods or Blood and Thunders in their early days. American dime novels were edited and rewritten for a British audience. These appeared in booklet form such as the Boys First Rate Pocket Library. Frank Reade Buffalo Bill and Deadwood Dick were all popular with the Penny Dreadful audience. Half-penny Dreadful In the mid-1890s a publisher Alfred Harmsworth decided to do something about what was widely perceived as the corrupting influence of the Penny Dreadfuls. He issued new story papers The Half-penny Marvel The Union Jack and Pluck all priced at one half-penny. At first the stories were high-minded moral tales reportedly based on true experiences but it was not long before these papers started using the same kind of material as the publications they competed against.
