‎anon.; Perley Poore Benjamin association‎

‎Mormoniad‎

‎Boston: A. Williams & Co. 1858. pp 2 100 2. An interesting Presentation Copy of a rare title of interest to the student of American History. Contemporary inscription on front free end paper in old ink: "Mr. Ben: Perley Poore with the best of the authors." Hardcover 8vo. in brown cloth with design in blind title to spine in gilt top edge stained red 100 pp. The Mormoniad has been described as a "scurrilous satire in verse " concerning President Buchanan's prosecution of the Mormon War. This volume spares no political party name-calling and is a reminder of just how contentious the period prior to the Civil War was. The book's publication took place only a year beyond the Mountain Meadow Massacre of September 1857 during which a California-bound wagon-train travelling through Utah Territory was set upon by Morman foot soldiers some disguised as Native Americans in a violent act which left 120 murdered men women and children. BENJAMIN PERLEY POORE 1820-1887 born near Newburyport Massachusetts was the first well-known 'national correspondent' of nineteenth century political reporting. He began his experience as a foreign correspondent over the signature 'Perley' during the 1840's first with the Boston Atlas. He went on to edit the Boston Bee and American Sentinel later becoming the Washington correspondent to The Boston Journal and other papers in the 1850's. Perley Poore also was a founding member and the first president of the Gridiron Club of Washington DC. He wrote political histories of the French biographies of several American Civil War era presidents and generals including a two-volume book on the Conspiracy Trial for the Murder of President Lincoln. He became known as Major Poore during the Civil War commanding a Massachusetts regiment. Perhaps most famously however Perley Poore wagered to push a wheelbarrow of apples from his home at Indian Hill Farm in West Newbury Massachusetts the thirty-six miles to Boston if Millard Fillmore outran John C. Fremont in the Presidential election of 1856 in Massachusetts. He lost the bet and was welcomed by a crowd of "ten thousand cheering onlookers" and a military escort after the miserable two-day trudge into Boston. The Wheelbarrow Polka was written in celebration. Included with the book is an Autograph Quotation Signed by Maj. Perley Poore. Condition: The boards show signs of some water damage said by the prior owner a family descendant to be due to a 1959 fire at Indian Hill Farm West Newbury which gutted the majority of an eccentric sixty-room house. There is moderate bubbling and wear to the cloth on both boards. The head and foot of the spine are worn. The interior of the book shows slight water damage to the ffeps. although the inscription is not effected. The volume is slightly cocked the pages are age-toned as expected with light foxing. Provenance: Benjamin Perley Poore descendants. Literature: WorldCat OCOLC 1732032. RARE007561 . inscribed by authors. First Edition. Hardcover. Good-. A. Williams & Co. Hardcover‎

‎MY VINEYARD AT LAKEVIEW. BY A WESTERN GRAPE GROWER‎

‎New York: Orange Judd & Co. 1866. Date from copyright notice as usual. At this time it appears to have been the publisher's practice not to date the title page and all copies are found thus. 12mo. 143 pages. One full-page illustration included in the pagination and several figures printed in the text. Original maroon cloth over beveled boards stamped in gold on the spine with blind borders on the covers. 19.6 cm. Ex-Sondley Reference Library with no external markings and modest internal markings: Tasteful bookplate on the front pastedown embossed stamp on several leaves including the title and ink number stamp on the verso of title and in the margin of one other page. Else good. Shallow chip to head of spine; light wear; some spotting and fading to the cloth. A few minor traces of soiling or foxing internally but the text is generally clean. Early stamp of an Asheville N.C. merchant James C. Brown on front pastedown. FIRST EDITION. "This is the personal account of a New Englander who left the printing trade and moved to Ohio resolved to change his lifestyle. The author chronicles his selection of land choice of native vines and year-by-year failures followed by successes that led eventually to a profitable commercial vineyard. He reveals the daily life of a hard-working pioneer viticulturist who wrote to share his experiences but who was too modest to put his name to the book." --Gabler G32830. Gabler and nearly every other authority on this interesting little book including NUC and OCLC attribute the work to Albert Nelson Prentiss 1836-1896 the first professor of botany at Cornell University. However this is apparently an error. The author states that he first planted his vines in Ohio twelve years before he wrote this book p. 7. Thus he must have left his native New England where he had married and was already well-started on a career as a printer by 1854 at the latest. The author indicates that he was active in Lakeview for a number of years thereafter and at the very least until the writing of this book see p. 120. For most of this same period Prentiss who was 18 in 1854 lived in Lansing Michigan. There he was a student at Michigan State Agricultural College 1858-1861 and later a professor at the same institution 1864-circa 1868 when he joined the Cornell faculty. Furthermore the best biographical sketch of Prentiss written by one of his Cornell colleagues gives us no reason to believe he was ever a printer or a commercial grape grower or a resident of Ohio and indicates that he did not marry until 1878. See George F. Atkinson "Albert Nelson Prentiss" in the "Botanical Gazette" vol. 21 No. 5. May 1896 pp. 283-289. While it is clear enough that Prentiss and the author of My Vineyard at Lakeview were two different people it is uncertain when and how they first became conflated and the identity of the true author remains unknown. On the other hand part of the book's very appeal is the author's evidently humble origins and the thoughtful but unpretentious way he addresses his subject matter. Amerine "Bibliography on Grapes Wines Other Alcoholic Beverages and Temperance" 2686. Bailey "Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture" p. 1536. Orange Judd & Co. hardcover‎

‎THE REPORT FROM THE COMMITTEE APPOINTED TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE PETITION OF SAMUEL LOW AND OTHERS WHOSE NAMES ARE THEREUNTO SUBSCRIBED IN BEHALF OF THEMSELVES AND THE REST OF THE GENTLEMEN AND LANDHOLDERS IN THIS KINGDOM IN REALTION TO THE NEW DEMAND OF THE TYTHE AGISTMENT OF DRY AND BARREN CATTLE‎

‎Dublin: Samuel Fairbrother 1735. Regarding an important controversy over taxation of landed Protestants of Ireland by the Clergy. Many were forced by economics to sell their lands and leave; the result of this "tythe" was threat of mass emigration to America by the remaining Protestants. A report from an ad hoc committee of the Irish House of Commons called in 1735 to consider an important question on tax burden and emigration. Irish clergy had demanded an additional income from the imposition of a tax for "agistment" pasturage of cattle on Irish Protestant landowners. The committee decided after reviewing the evidence presented in this report that the tax would "impair the Protestant interest" by causing Protestants to emigrate to America reducing the influence of the established church in Ireland. It resolved to find a "proper remedy" though it took no legal action until the Irish House of Commons was dissolved in 1800 when the parliament in London forced an abolition of the old tithes as a formality. 8 folded quarto leaves in a folded drab portfolio.
