‎An Anthology of Famous English and American Poetry.‎

‎New York: The Modern Library n.y. Hardcover. 8vo. Green cloth with gilt spine lettering and medallion pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. xxvi 961pp 2pp ads. Near fine/very good. Faint jacket edgewear. A tight most attractive later printing undated but jacket and binding clues point to 1966 of Modern Library Giant #G-67 first published in 1945. This copy bears a fine autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a handsome Typed Note Signed from Benét 1p 5¼" X 8" New York NY 18 May 1939. Addressed to future notable Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93. Near fine. On "The Saturday Review of Literature" letterhead which cites him as contributing editor Benét comments "Yes my son has returned from Spain and is now on the editorial staff of The New Republic. I am glad you like The Saturday Review." Boldly signed in black ink. Benét's son James Walker 1914-2012 was a journalist and author and one of the last surviving members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade American volunteers who fought for the Republic in the Spanish Civil War. Benét 1886-1950 was a prolific American editor writer and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet 1942 as well as brother of famed Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Stephen Vincent Benét. Lovely copy of this to cite front jacket panel "comprehensive collection of Anglo-American poetry from Chaucer to Auden in England and from our own Revolutionary time through the Second World War" -- in nice jacket and with unusual letter from co-editor.
