‎A REVEALED KNOWLEDGE, OF THE PROPHECIES & TIMES. [BOOKS ONE AND TWO, BOUND TOGETHER]‎

‎Full leather. 8vo. 68; 108 pages. 22 cm. First edition. Two volumes bound together: “Book the first. Wrote under the direction of the Lord God, and published by His sacred command; it being the first sign of warning for the benefit of all nations. Containing, with other great and remarkable things, not revealed to any other person on earth, the restoration of the Hebrews to Jerusalem, by the year 1798: under their revealed prince and prophet. ” / “A revealed knowledge of the prophecies & times, particularly of the present time, the present war, and the prophecy now fulfilling. The year of the world 5913. Book the second. Containing, with other great and remarkable things, not revealed to any other person on earth, the sudden and perpetual fall of the Turkish, German, and Russian empires, wrote under the direction of the Lord God, and published by his sacred command, it being a second sign of warning for the benefit of all nations, by the man that will be revealed to the Hebrews as their prince and prophet”. Two volumes constituting the major work of Richard Brothers, the “founder of Anglo Israelism; born Dec. 25, 1757, at Placentia, Newfoundland; died at London Jan. 25, 1824. … Brothers described himself as the ‘nephew of the Almighty, ’ because he considered that he was descended from one of the brothers of Jesus, and claimed that on Nov. 17, 1795, he would be revealed as the prince of the Hebrews and ruler of the world. Before that date, however, he had been removed to a lunatic asylum, where he wrote his ‘Revealed Knowledge of the Prophecies’ (1794) , ‘A Description of the New Jerusalem’ (1801) , and ‘The New Covenant Between God and His People’ (a posthumous work, 1830) . Brothers seems to have been the first person to claim that the English are descendants of the Lost Ten Tribes; and his views are still referred to with respect by the adherents of Anglo-Israelism. His ‘Description of the New Jerusalem’ contains a series of plates of the various officials of the new kingdom which was to be restored in Palestine under his leadership. These officials are all dressed in the court costume of George III. ” (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) . Later full leather binding, with pastedown red leather gilt title on spine, decorative marbled boards over leather. Subjects: Bible - Prophecies - Early works to 1800. Prophets - England. Prophecies (Occultism) . Jews - Restoration. Private revelations. Brothers, Richard, 1757-1824 - Prophecies. Bible - Prophecies. De Voltaire. ’ Written by Antoine Guinee a “French priest and Christian apologist; born at Etampes 1717; died 1803. He wrote, besides various apologetic works, ‘Lettres de Quelques Juifs Portugais, Allemands et Polonais, à M. De Voltaire, ’ Paris, 1769, often reprinted and translated into English and other languages. The letters are a defense of the Bible, not of Judaism. ” (1906 JE) “It seems that, aside from his desire to select any subject apt to furnish an opportunity to display his humorous satire and give him a chance to attack the Bible, Voltaire had no intention of antagonizing the Jews. In his reply to Isaac de Pinto, who wrote an apology for the Jews entitled ‘Apologie pour la Nation Juive, ’ Voltaire admitted as much. He recognized the fact that there were respectable Jews, and he did not wish to wound the feelings of his opponent by references to the people of Israel as represented in the Bible. Antoine Guené, who defended the Bible against the attacks of Voltaire, embodied in his ‘Lettres de Quelques Juifs’ De Pinto's apology together with the correspondence to which it gave rise. Voltaire replied in a pamphlet, ‘Un Chrétien Contre Six Juifs’ (1776) , without taking up the Jewish question. ” (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) Subjects: Judaism - Apologetic works. Voltaire, 1694-1778 - Correspondence. Bible. Old Testament - Evidences, authority, etc. OCLC lists 13 copies of this edition. Rubbing to extremities of boards, lightly foxed throughout. ‎Original Full calf. 8vo. [14], 279 pages. 21 cm. First edition. In Latin. Published in London. An English translation was published in the same year, with the title: “Critical enquiries into the various editions of the Bible printed in divers places and at several times: together with Animadversions upon a small treatise of Dr. Isaac Vossius concerning the Oracles of the sibylls, and an answer to the objections of the late Critica sacra”. Isaac Vossius (1618-1689) was a biblical scholar, friend and translator of Manasseh ben Israel. Richard Simon, “French scholar and Orientalist; born at Dieppe May 13, 1638; died there April 21, 1721. After studying at the Sorbonne he joined the Congregation of the Oratory, in the library of which he studied Oriental works and manuscripts. When a certain Jew was condemned to the pyre at Metz on a blood accusation, Simon wrote a strong opinion in protest (1670) . He translated Leon of Modena's ‘Historia dei Riti Ebraici, ’ etc. (1674) , and wrote ‘Comparaison des Cérémonies des Juifs et de la Discipline de l'Eglise’ (1681) . His chief work, however, was his ‘Histoire Critique du Vieux Testament’ (1678) , practically the first introduction to the Old Testament written. It dealt with the books of the Old Testament as if they were ordinary writings, and by this means aroused the enmity of Bossuet and the Port Royal, through whose influence the whole edition of 1, 300 copies was seized and destroyed and Simon was expelled from the Oratory (May 21, 1678) . Notwithstanding the destruction of his book, several pirated editions appeared in Holland. Simon wrote several pamphlets defending his views against the attacks of contemporary writers, such as Vossius, Spanheim, Jurien, Colomies, Le Clerc, and others. ” (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) . Nine volumes, from the same printer, same writer (s) , bound together, including: “The book of wonders, marvellous and true” 1813; “The second book of wonders, more marvellous than the first”, 1813; “The third book of wonders, announcing the coming of Shiloh: with a call to the Hebrews, from Isaiah xi, ‘And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. ’ Revelation xxii. 16, 17, ‘I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. ’ Here is the call to the Jews, to answer, how they will expect the branch, without the root, whom they cut off, and set at nought” 1814; “The fourth book of wonders: being the answer of the Lord to the Hebrews”, 1814; “The fifth book of wonders: announcing the event having taken place, which was promised in the fourth book should be in May: with a further explanation of the four former books ; also an answer to the address of the Rev. James Hearn, Curate of Brixham, Devon; and to the mockery of others”, 1814; and four pamphlets: “Copies of letters sent to the clergy of Exeter, from 1796 to 1800, with communications and prophecies put in the newspapers in 1813”; “Wisdom excelleth the weapons of war: and herein is shewn that judgments are the strange works of the Lord, but mercy His darling attribute”, 1814; “A communication sent in a letter to the Reverend Mr. P. In 1797, with an explanation thereon now given”, 1814; “Prophecies announcing the birth of the Prince of Peace”, 1814. All publications “Printed by W. Marchant, Ingram Court”, and end on this note "The above taken from Joanna Southcott's mouth, by me, Ann Underwood. " Nine publications by Joanna Southcott (1750-1814) , prophet and writer, who started the Southcottian movement with her phrophecies, gaining many adherents from Richard Brothers after his arrest: “One of the most significant of her London converts was Jane Townley, who not only invited Southcott, in April 1804, to become part of her household, but also did all she could to promote Southcott's writings and cause, including providing her maidservant, Ann Underwood, to act as Southcott's accomplished and devoted amanuensis. With the steadfast assistance of Foley, Sharp, and others, the three women became the nerve centre for the Southcottian movement, which generated an astonishing degree of interest, correspondence, and debate regarding Southcott's prophetic claims. Between 1801 and 1814, Southcott published some sixty-five pamphlets, totalling almost 5000 pages; moreover, her unpublished manuscripts amount to twice the number of pages in print. By one conservative estimate, a total of 108, 000 copies of her various works were published and circulated from 1801 to 1816, making her one of the most popular writers of her time (Hopkins, 84) . One reason for the immediate appeal of her texts is their unique mix of apocalyptic optimism with down-to-earth narratives about everyday life, which she converts to spiritual account. … In 1814 Southcott carried the claim to a new level when she announced that she was about to become the mother of Shiloh, the name given to the expected divine incarnation. The revelation was made explicit in The Third Book of Wonders, Announcing the Coming of Shiloh (1814) , and Prophecies Announcing the Birth of the Prince of Peace (1814) , which collected extractions from earlier writings that seemed to anticipate this new revelation. … After Southcott's death the movement splintered and prophets of Shiloh proliferated, among which John Ward's Shilohites and John Wroe's Christian Israelites were the most prominent. A core of her inner circle kept the faith quietly, remaining loyal to Southcott's work, as signified by their protection of the ‘great box’, which contained the sealed prophecies that were to be opened some time in the unspecified future by the bishops. ” (Oxford National Biography, 2004) . Bound in half calf with marbled boards, with gilt title on spine. Subjects: Prophecies. Southcott Movement – Prior to 1815.
