POST-BIBLICAL HISTORY OF THE JEWS; FROM THE CLOSE OF THE OLD TESTAMENT, ABOUT THE YEAR 420 B.C.E., TILL THE DESTRUCTION OF THE SECOND TEMPLE IN THE YEAR 70 C.E. IN TWO VOLUMES. VOL. II. (ONLY)
Philadelphia: Moss & Brother, 1855. Cloth, 8vo. 486 pages. First edition. Raphall (1798-1868) was born in Stockholm and settled in England in 1825, quickly becoming prominent in British Jewry as one of its chief exponents to the Christian world and as a fighter for the political rights of Jews and against defamations of Judaism. He published the first Jewish periodical in England and co-produced the first translation of parts of the Mishna into English. In 1849 he moved to the US, and in 1860 delivered the first invocation by a rabbi before the US House of Representatives. Raphall is most known, however, for his delivery, less than a year later at the height of the secession crisis in Janualry of 1861, of what became "the most highly publicized rabbinical statement on the 'Bible and Slavery'" in which he placed "Judaism squarely in opposition to abolitionism, [and] denied that any statement in the Bible could be interpreted to prohibit slavery, and, insisted that, on the contrary, biblical law granted the right to own slaves. " (EJ) . This played well with Jewish Southerners. He eventually settled in New York, where he led the B'nai Jeshurun congregation. (JE) Singerman 1409. SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- History -- 586 B. (Jt-b) Noah, Mordecai.
TRAVELS IN ENGLAND, FRANCE, SPAIN, AND THE BARBARY STATES IN THE YEARS 1813-14 AND 15.
Kirk and Mercein; London: John Miller New York, 1819. First edition. 8vo, vi, [2], 431, [1], xlvii pages. Lacks engraved frontis portrait and 3 of 4 engraved plates. Bound in attractive modern cloth with spine label. Noah (1785-1851) was a lawyer, playwright, and journalist. He was born in Philadelphia of Portuguese-Jewish ancestry. "In 1813 [he] was appointed consul to Tunis, with a special mission to Algers. He was instructed to negotiate for the release of some Americans held as prisoners by the Algerine pirates. On May 23, 1813, he sailed from Charleston, but his vessel being captured by the British, he was taken to England and detained two months. In October he arrived in Cadiz, where he contracted with Richard R. Keene, an American who had become a Spanish subject, to effect the release of the twelve Americans
After being detained in France and Spain for more than a year, Noah finally arrived in Tunis. On July 30, 1815, he received a letter from James Monroe, secretary of state, revoking his commission and hinting at irregularities in his accounts. Monroe's treatment of Noah was never satisfactorily explained, though his association with Keene, who had been accused of treason, was doubtless detrimental
In January 1817, however, Noah received a letter from the Department of State which vindicated his conduct and returned several thousand dollars due him in the enterprise which resulted in the release of the American captives" (DAB) . TEXTUAL KNOWLEDGE: TEACHING THE BIBLE IN THEORY AND IN PRACTICE
Cloth. 8vo. 181 pages. Illus. 23 cm. Textual Knowledge: Teaching the Bible in Theory and in Practice is a book aimed at anyone who wishes to explore what it means to teach the Bible, one of the foundational texts of Western culture. In this volume the author explores the largest issues involved in Bible teaching: What are our purposes? What are the outcomes that we are looking for? How do we conceptualize the Bible as a subject matter? How do we develop theories of Bible teaching? And how do we move from theory to practice? Looking at a variety of alternative conceptions, Textual Knowledge helps offer clarity about a teacher's goals and practical advice about what it means to attain those goals. In addition the book explores the relationship between knowledge of Bible and teaching the Bible. What kind of knowledge does the Bible teacher need to have? How must that knowledge of subject matter be structured and conceptualized? How might differing scholarly conceptions of the discipline influence teachers' ways of thinking about the Bible? Drawing upon recent research in the field of general education, the author draw connections to the domain of Bible education. As a book that embraces both theoretical issues and practical concerns, Textual Knowledge explores matters of central concern to Jewish educators in particular, but is relevant to educators from other religious traditions and for those teaching the Bible in secular institutions such as universities as well. At its heart the author seeks to improve Bible pedagogy-making it deeper, richer, more reflective, and more powerful for students of any age and in any setting. ISBN: 0873340914 9780873340915. Life and Death Responsibilities in Jewish Biomedical Ethics
When may artificial technologies be used to help create human life? Can abortion be morally right? When should life-sustaining treatment be stopped? How extensive are my responsibilities to support the health care needs of others? Technological and social developments have placed these quesrtion at the center of society's concerns and in the middle of people's lives. Our answers will the shaoe and calues and the institutions of society, and will literally make the difference between life and death for many of its members. The Unites States and other societies have explored these issues through courts and commissions, through legislative debate and private deliberations of conscience. In the Jewish tradition, the central means of addressinf these concerns is through halakhah, or Jewish law. While the insights of halakhah are central to the lives of many Jews, these perspectives have also been found valuable by persons of other faith traditions and secular outlooks. This book presents papers on biomedical ethics that integrate the resources of millennia with the most recent developments in medicine and ethical thought. These include some of the most thoughtful and important works in Hewish medical ethics on such issues as treatment decisions near the end of life, abortion, and reproductive technologies. The importnace of the papers as statements of halakhah is evidenced by their approval by the Rabbinical Assembly's Committee on Jewish Law and Standards, halakhic guide for the Conservative movement. Authors include Elliot Dorff, David Feldman, Isaac Klein, Avram Reisned, and Aaron mackler.

THE HALAKHIC PROCESS
Softcover, 398 pages. Illus. 24 cm. ISBN: 0873340353 9780873340359. In his enlightening discussion of one of the most important topics in Jewish thought today, Prof. Roth presents and analyzes the primary Talmudic and rabbinic sources relating to the legal and extralegal factors that go into the process of halakhic decision-making. He leads the reader through the entire process, step by step. The concepts of Biblical versus rabinnic legislation, the role of precedent and custom, extra legal factors (science, technology, medicine, sociology, economics, ethics and psychology) the scope of rabbinic authority, the qualifications for halakhic decision-making authority-all these are taken up and placed in context of the question of legitimacy and illegitimacy, authenticity and in authenticity. All the pressing and controversial questions of our time-women's rights and obligations: the ordination of women, their inclusion into a minyan, prenuptial agreements regarding divorce, the abolition of the second day of the festivals-are bound up with the issues discussed in this book. Anyone concerned with these and similar matters will gain a far broader and deeper appreciation for the real issues involved. New Condition. (JTS1-37)

THE MA`SAR KESAFIM LEDGER OF MORDECAI ZEEV EHRENPREIS OF LVOV
Cloth, 86 + 41 pages. Facsims. Map. 25 cm. ISBN: 9654560372 9789654560375. Ma´sar kesafim (income tithing) is a long-standing Jewish practice. First mentioned in a midrash of a third/fourth-century scholar, it was popularized in the Middle Ages among Ashkenazic Jewry, who not only designated communal tax obligations as ma´aser, but also developed ma´sar kesafim as a practice of individuals desirous of habituating themselves to give to charity in a disciplined and ongoing fashion. Individual Jews dedicate themselves to this personal practice to the present day. Although Pinkese ma´sar kesafim (income tithe ledgers) are mentioned here and there in the literature, none have yet been found and published. Fortunately, Mordecai Zeev Ehrenpreis, a kind-hearted Jew in mid-nineteenth century Lvov (Lemberg) , took a vow to practice ma´sar kesafim one year before he married, kept a detailed record of the income and disbursements of this fund, and eventually bequeathed us his Pinkas. This most informative and fascinating document is edited and published herein. Ehrenpreis commences with a detailed protocol enumerating the nature and conditions of his vow; he also intersperses his accounts with eloquent meditations on his uncertain financial state and on dangers confronting his family, providing the reader a full image of his world. A comprehensive introduction examines the history and practice of ma´sar kesafim, tracing the stages in its development as well as the meaning it held for Ehrenpreis. Jay Rovner holds a Ph. D. In Talmud and Rabbinics from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, where he serves as the Manuscript Bibliographer of its library. He has published studies of the development of the Talmud and the nature of the Stammaitic component of its text, and on Jewish liturgy and its development. New Condition. (JTS1-42)
