‎DI BAYTSH FUN HAKNKRAYTS: KURTSE GESHIKHTE FUN DI NATSISHE KRIGS-FARBREKHNS IN DER TSVEYTER VELT-MILHOMEH‎

‎First Yiddish edition. Original boards. 8vo. 327 pages; illustrations. 21cm. In Yiddish. Title translates to "The Scourge of the Swastika: A Brief History of Nazi War Crimes during WWII, " which was the original title when the work was issued in the original English. Here it is translated for a Jewish audience in the first decade of the State of Israels existence. "Born Edward Frederick Langley Russell in 1895, Lord Russell was educated at Oxford University. He served in both world wars, retiring as a brigadier general, and in between qualified as a barrister, rising in 1948 to the position of judge advocate general. But he was best known for his 15 books. The greatest sensation in his legal career came when he was assistant judge advocate general in 1954 and legal adviser to the Commander in Chief for the trial of World War II Nazi war criminals in the British zone in Germany. While in this position, he wrote ''Scourge of the Swastika, '' which condemned Nazi atrocities. The Lord Chancellor asked him to withdraw the book, but Lord Russell refused and resigned his office instead. The book was later published in 16 editions, including foreign languages and Braille. Lord Russell said the publication was an attempt to show that the war crimes were the natural outgrowth of the Nazi master-race doctrine and that the German people had endured a reign of terror (NY Times, 1981) . " SUBJECTS: World War, 1939-1945 -- Atrocities. World War, 1939-1945 -- Germany. Atrocities. Samp stains throughout. Boards are warped. Internally Very Good. Overall Good- Condition. (YID-27-43)‎

‎(Xt) Niebuhr, Reinhold‎

‎THE RELATIONS OF CHRISTIANS AND JEWS IN WESTERN CIVILIZATION‎

‎1st Edition. Type-Written Manuscript. 21 pages ; 28 cm. This is a type-written copy of Reinhold Niebuhr’s essay first published in Pious and Secular America (Scribner, 1958) . Probably typed by the author or the publisher prior to publication for circulation to colleagues; this copy originates from professorial files of a prominent Jewish seminary. The essay marked a serious change in Niebuhr’s views on conversion. “As a young pastor in Detroit, he favored conversion of Jews to Christianity, scolding evangelical Christians who were anti-Semitic or ignoring them. He spoke out against ‘the unchristlike attitude of Christians’ and what he described as his fellow Christians' ‘Jewish bigotry…’ Eventually his theology evolved to the point where he was the first prominent Christian theologian to argue it was inappropriate for Christians to seek to convert Jews to their faith. ’” (Wikipedia, 2017) It is the latter position that Niebhur defends in this landmark essay. Niebuhr is widely regarded as one of the most important theologians and ethicists in American (and protestant) history. “Historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. Described Niebuhr as ‘the most influential American theologian of the 20th century’ and Time posthumously called Niebuhr ‘the greatest Protestant theologian in America since Jonathan Edwards. ’” (Wikipedia, 2017) OCLC lists no copies worldwide. ‎1st Edition. Original Cloth. 4to. LIX, CLIV, 183 pages. 29 cm. In English and Judeo-Arabic. The manuscript of the Book of comfort. Edited from the unique manuscript by Julian Obermann. Facsimile edition of a Judeo-Arabic ms. With transcription into Arabic; introduction and notes in English. Yale oriental series. Researches, XVII. Nissim ben Jacob ben Nissim ibn Shahin (c. 990–1062) , “together with Hananel b. Hushi'el , the outstanding leader and talmudist of North Africa. … Hibbur me-haYeshu'ah (Ferrara, 1557) , Nissim's best-known work, is a collection of Hebrew stories and folktales taken from early sources. It is designed to strengthen belief, faith, and morality among the people and to raise their spirit. This work, possibly the first prose storybook in medieval Hebrew literature, paved the way for Hebrew belletristic literature as a literary genre. Tradition has it that Nissim dedicated the book to his father-in-law, Dunash, who is otherwise unknown, to console him in his mourning. The first printed edition was published from an early Hebrew translation, and the Arabic text was published by J. Obermann. The Hebrew version has been frequently republished, not always according to the same translation. A new Hebrew translation, together with critical annotations by H. Z. Hirschberg, was published in 1954. Additional Arabic texts have been published by S. Abramson. The work circulated widely even before its first printing, and had a great influence on similar story collections. Ma'asiyyot she-ba-Talmud (Constantinople, 1519) was based upon it, and the Hibbur ha-Ma'asiyyot (ibid. , 1519) is an anthology of its stories. Many of the stories included by Gaster in his The Exempla of the Rabbis (1924; 19682) were taken from it. ” - 2008 EJ. Subjects: Talmud - Legends. Jewish legends. Aggada - Translations into English.
