MORDEKHAI IMANUEL NOAH [AND] MASAOT BANGLIAH, TSFARAT, SEFARD, UVARTZOT BARBARIA
1st Edition [and] 1st Hebrew edition. Modern boards, 8vo, [66], 25 pages. 22 cm. In Hebrew. Two books published together. First Title is Mordekhai Imanuel Noah by Rabbi Max Raisin. Title translates to Mordecai Manuel Noah. Second title is Masaot by Mordecai Manuel Noah, the First Hebrew translation of Noahs famous Travels in England, France, Spain and the Barbary States, in the years 1813-14 and 15. Publishing the work in Hebrew, in Eastern Europe, was a way to reach the wider Jewish world to tell the amazing story of Noah, probably the most powerful Jew in the Western Hemisphere of the early 19th Century. Both are published by the Achiasaf Society, a Hebrew language publisher founded by noted Zionist thinker Asher Zvi Hirsch Ginzberg, better known as Ahad HaAm. It contains a brief biography of American-Jewish statesman and proto-Zionist thinker, Mordecai Manuel Noah, and Noahs own accounts of his travels in England, France, Spain, and the Barbary Coast. (Today known as the Greater Maghreb. ) Noah, a journalist, playwright, politician, and lawyer, was one of the most prominent Jews of Early America, and served as Consul to Kingdom of Tunis (modern Tunisia) under President James Madison. When then-Secretary of State James Monroe removed Noah from Noahs post, citing his religion as an obstacle, it sparked an outcry among American Jews and non-Jews alike, with Noah receiving letters of support from John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. Discouraged from pursuing government positions, Noah continued his career as a newspaperman in New York, founding and editing numerous publications there. Unfortunately, Noah is probably best remembered for his ambitious but failed attempt to establish Ararat, A Jewish City of Refuge on Grand Island in Upstate New York. Noahs ardent belief that Jews would flock to his settlement to escape international persecution proved false, and Ararat never came to be. Masaot was written in 1814, before Noahs removal from his position of Consul, and ten years before the failure of Ararat. His biography is written by Rabbi Max Raisin, prominent early 20th-century historian of Jewish America. SUBJECT(S) Jewish politicians -- United States -- Biography -- Voyages and Travels. (Xt) Raphael, Melissa
JUDAISM AND THE VISUAL IMAGE: A JEWISH THEOLOGY OF ART
1st edition, original cloth, 8vo, x, 229 pages, Judaism and the Visual Image argues for a Jewish theology of image that, among other things, helps us re-read the creation story in Genesis 1 and to question why images of Jewish women as religious subjects appear to be doubly suppressed by the Second Commandment, when images of observant male Jews have become legitimate, even iconic, representations of Jewish holiness. Raphael further suggests that 'devout beholding' of images of the Holocaust is a corrective to post-Holocaust theologies of divine absence from suffering that are infused by a sub-theological aesthetic of the sublime. Raphael concludes by proposing that the relationship between God and Israel composes itself into a unitary dance or moving image by which each generation participates in a processive revelation that is itself the ultimate work of Jewish art. LE JUDAÏSME COMME RACE ET COMME RELIGION; CONFERENCE FAITE AU CERCLE SAINT-SIMON, LE 27 JANVIER 1883
1st Edition. Original Paper Wrappers bound inside Period Boards. 8vo. [2] , 29 pages ; 23 cm. In French. Very important period anti-racist imprint. Title Translates into English as, Judaism as a Race and a Religion; From the Conference At The Circle Of Saint-Simon, On 27 January 1883. Joseph Ernest Renan (1823 1892) was a French expert of Semitic languages and civilizations (philology) , philosopher, historian, and writer, devoted to his native province of Brittany. He is best known for his influential historical works on early Christianity, and his political theories, especially concerning nationalism and national identity. Renan is credited as being among the first scholars to advance the Khazar theory, which held that Ashkenazi Jews were descendants of Turkic peoples who had adopted Jewish religion and migrated to Western Europe following the collapse of their khanate
. In his 1883 lecture Le Judaïsme comme race et comme Religion he disputed the concept that Jewish people constitute a unified racial entity in a biological sense, which made his views unpalatable within racial antisemitism. Renan was also known for being a strong critic of German ethnic nationalism, with its antisemitic undertones. (Wikipedia, 2016) A very clean first edition copy of Renans 1883 lecture. THE INTERNATIONAL MILITARY TRIBUNAL AND THE HOLOCAUST: SOME LEGAL REFLECTIONS [INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR]
1st separate edition, original wrappers, 8vo. 13 pages. Reprint from the Israel law review, vol. 7, no. 1, January 1972. The author, Jacob Robinson (18891977) , was a jurist, politician, diplomat, and Holocaust researcher
. After official Jewish representation was prohibited in Lithuania in 1927, Robinson organized an informal, secret group to defend Jewish interests. With the outbreak of World War II and the incorporation of Vilna into Lithuania, this committee played a leading role in receiving Jewish refugees from Poland and integrating Vilnas Jewish population into Lithuania. Robinson left Lithuania in May 1940 and reached the United States with his family in December of that year. In February 1941, he founded the Institute of Jewish Affairs (IJA) , the research arm of the American and World Jewish Congress, which he directed until 1947. The IJAs main topics of research were the fate of Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe; the question of reparation and indemnification; the legal basis for prosecuting Nazi criminals; and the promotion of the concept of human rights as a means for defending the rights of Jews. In 1945, Robinson advised U. S. Chief Prosecutor Robert H. Jackson in Nuremberg and codrafted the Jewish case presented to the International Military Tribunal. In 1946, he counseled chief prosecutor Telford Taylor on the Flick Case in Nuremberg. That same year, Robinson worked for the United Nations as an expert consultant to the team creating and establishing the Commission of Human Rights. In 1947 Robinson became legal adviser to the Jewish Agency at the UN and from 1948 to 1957 he was legal counsel to Israels delegation. Thanks to his previous experience, Robinson was instrumental in developing the Israeli diplomatic service. In 1952, he drafted the reparations agreement between Israel and the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) . His brother Nehemiah (18981964) was also a brilliant lawyer. He was Jacobs close partner and successor as director of the IJA, and drafted the agreements between the FRG and the Claims Conference as well as the FRGs Indemnification Law. In 1957, Robinson became the legal adviser for the Conference on Material Claims Against Germany, helped establish the research branch of Yad Vashem, and coordinated Holocaust research between several research Institutes (among them YIVO, Yad Vashem, Leo Baeck Institute, Wiener Library, and the Centre de Documentation Juive Contemporaine) . Robinson also coordinated the collaboration of these and other Jewish institutions with the prosecution in trials against Nazi criminals. He was also the legal mind behind the prosecution at the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem (19601961) , serving as special assistant to the attorney general. Robinson edited the Holocaust section for the Encyclopedia Judaica (1971) and several volumes of documentary sources of the Holocaust. He also published several important bibliographic works on international law (YIVO, 2018) . SUBJECT(S) : Nuremberg Trial of Major German War Criminals, Nuremberg, Germany, 1945-1946. Among the oldest Jewish congregations in Philadelphia, Mikveh Israel has counted among its members prominent revolutionary patriots, such as Jonas Phillips, the Gratz family, and Haym Solomon, who financed the war. Congregant Rebecca Gratz founded and managed philanthropic and educational institutions devoted to the needs of women and children, Jewish and gentile; she is reputed to be the model for Rebecca of York, heroine of Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott
The congregation traces its history to 1740
Benjamin Franklin was an earlier contributor to its building fund
In 1829, Isaac Leeser became the leader of the synagogue and held that position until 1850. Another prominent hazzan, Sabato Morais, succeeded Leeser. HAMISHAH VE-ELEF MIKHTAMIM MEKORIYIM: BI-SHENE HALAKIM (VOLUME 1 ONLY, OF 2)
Hardcover, 8vo, 150 pages, 23 cm. In Hebrew. Only volume 1 (of 2 issued) . SUBJECT(S) : Epigrams, Hebrew. Added title page: Chamisha voleph; one thousand and five original Hebrew epigrams. Other Titles: Chamisha voleph. ; One thousand and five original Hebrew epigrams. Rosenzweig (1861-1914) was a U. S. Hebrew writer. Born in Lithuania, he taught Hebrew in Bialystok, and in 1888 he immigrated to the United States. Rosenzweig edited several Hebrew periodicals Ha-Ivri, Kadimah, Ha-Devorah- they were short-lived and earned him neither fame nor a livelihood. He also edited Hebrew columns in the Yiddish press. Though he was a versifier rather than a poet, he had a genuine flair for satire and he was known to his contemporaries as the sweet satirist of Israel and as a parodist he earned an honorable place in Hebrew literature. His Talmud Yankai poured a stream of ill-humored sarcasm on the peddler, the teacher, the rabbi. The pages of that collection of satires resembled the pages of the Talmud: the text in large letters, wreathed by commentary in Rashi script, is divided into six tractates instead of the talmudic six orders. Rosenzweig also denounced the vulgarisms of the country, the worship of money, the religion of success. Epigrammatic neatness was his forte. Example: What is the difference between a convert and an anarchist? A convert denies what he believes, an anarchist believes what he denies. Using a biblical phrase, he quipped sardonically about his impending death by cancer of the tongue: Life and death are at the mercy of the tongue (Prov. 18: 21) . He published two books of epigrams: Shirim, Meshalim u-Mikhtamim and Hamishah ve-Elef Mikhtamim. In the English preface to his Hebrew translations of America, The Star-Spangled Banner, and Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean which appeared in the booklet Mi-Zimrat ha-Arez, he ventured to suggest that the youngest nation is the heir of the oldest, and all that was best in the Jewish nation is now in the possession of the American nation to be developed and cultivated for the benefit of all humanity (Silberschlag in EJ, 2007) . OCLC lists 25 copies worldwide. Ex-library with Jewish institutional stamp and usual makrings. Small tear to four middle pages with no text effected, otherwise in very good condition. (Heb-22-6a)
