GESCHICHTE DER JUDEN IN PORTUGAL
Period boards. 8vo, xi, 367, [1] pages. First Edition. In German. Fascinating look at the history of Jews in early Portugal up to the mid-19th century. Part of the series "Schriften" herausgegeben vom Institut zur Förderung der israelitischen Literatur. Series: Schriften vom Institute zur förderung der israelitischen literatur ... 12. Jahr: 1866-1867; Kayserling was a German rabbi and historian. Kayserling, born in Hanover, studied with S. R. Hirsch in Nikolsburg, S. J. Rapoport in Prague, and S. B. Bamberger in Wuerzburg and at Halle University. From 1861 to 1870 he was rabbi at Endingen, Switzerland, where he fought strenuously for Jewish rights; thereafter he was rabbi and preacher in Budapest

KERIAT HA-TORAH: LE-VAER HORAAT SHORESH KARA, VE-EKH SHE-HISHTAMSHU BO HAZAL BA-SHAS ... NOSAF MIKHTAV BEER REHOVOT
Period boards. 8vo, 44 pages, 17 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates to: The Reading of the Torah: For Explaining the Root of Reading and Its Use...with Beer Rehovot Letter. Explanation of the root of Kara and how it was used by the sages in the Talmud. The title page states that it will explain their intent in a clear language and explain the subject of yesh aim le-Mikra and aim le-Messorah, that is, whether a verse is to be understood as it is written or as it is read. It also addresses other issues in the Talmud built upon the structure of the Hebrew language. There are approbations from Rabbi Akiva Eger and from Rabbi Simha Wiel. An apologia from the author follows, and then the text, in a single column in rabbinic type. It begins with introductory material and continues, in the order of issues in the Talmud. After the discourses based on the Talmud is a strong refutation (33a-44b) on modifications to the accepted liturgy in the book Iggeret beit Tefillah by Isaac Satanof (1732-1804) . The latter was a Haskalah writer, who, in his book, classified every word that he explained as either "Hebrew" or "talmudic, " and proceeded to clarify this question at other opportunities as well. Satanof attempted to break out of the strict framework of biblical style, although he himself was very adept in the biblical style called melizah. Hence he demanded that new words be coined; in Iggeret Beit Tefillah he complains that the vocabulary of biblical Hebrew had not preserved its great lexical range. Rabbi Coeslin was also the author of Mesilol bedikduk Loshon ha-Kodesh. SUBJECTS: Masorah. Hebrew language -- Lexicography. Hebrew language -- Lexicography. Masorah. OCLC lists 9 copies worldwide. (xt) Khvolson, D. A. (Daniil Avraamovich)
Das Letzte Passamahl Christi Und Der Tag Seines Todes, Nach Den in Übereinstimmung Gebrachten Berichten Der Synoptiker Und Des Evangelium Johannis
Later boards. Folio. 4to, 190 pages. 34 cm. Second edition. In German, with Hebrew, Greek, Arabic. Title translates as: The last Passover meal of Christ and the day of his death, according to the report of the Synoptics put into accordance with the Gospel of John. Anastatic reprint of the edition of 1892, with three supplements, containing additions and improvements of the author. D. A. Chwolson (Daniel Avraamovich Khvolson, 18191911) was a Russian Orientalist. Chwolson was born of poor, devout Jewish parents in Vilna. In 1841 he went to Breslau, where Abraham *Geiger befriended him and helped him prepare for matriculation at the university. Later he returned to Russia, settling in St. Petersburg. In 1855 Chwolson became a convert of the Russian Orthodox Church. He was then appointed professor of Hebrew, Syriac, and Chaldaic philology at the University of St. Petersburg, and three years later he was given the corresponding chair at both the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic theological academies in the same city. In this triple capacity he taught practically every eminent Semitic scholar in Russia during the second half of the 19th century and after. Among his disciples were the greatest Russian Orientalists. Despite his conversion, Chwolson remained well disposed toward Jews and Judaism and retained his friendship with many eminent Jewish scholars and leaders. He was particularly welcome in Jewish Orthodox circles because of his frequent intervention on their behalf when government officials threatened the yeshivot or the publication of the Talmud. Das letzte Passahmahl Christi und der Tag seines Todes (1892) , while meant as an answer to antisemitic accusations, is a learned and detailed investigation of the circumstances of Jesus' trial and condemnation. In it Chwolson attempted to prove that Jesus was sentenced to death by the Sadducean high court and that therefore the Pharisees and masses of Jews bear no guilt. (2007 Encyclopedia Judaica) . The deep-rooted belief that Jesus was crucified by the Jews being the principal cause of the prejudice against them on the part of the Christians, Chwolson, in a dissertation entitled "Poslyedniyaya Paskhalnaya Vecherya Isusa Christa I Den yevo Smerti, " in "Christianskoe Chtenie, " St. Petersburg, 1875 (German translation, "Das Letzte Passamal Christi, " ib. 1892) , shows the groundlessness of this belief. He points out that the proceedings of the trial and condemnation of Jesus, as related in the Gospels, were in violation of the rabbinical laws, and consequently could not have been conducted by a Jewish tribunal. (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) . Subjects: Last Supper. Jesus Christ - Crucifixion. Jesus Christ - Chronology. Bible. N. T. Gospels - Criticism, interpretation, etc. Bible. N. T. Gospels - Chronology. Klatzkin (1882-1948) was an author, philosopher, and Zionist. Klatzkin was born in Bereza Kartuska, Brest-Litovsk district, today Belarus. The son of Elijah Klatzkin, a prominent rabbinical scholar, who gave him a thorough education in all branches of traditional Jewish studies. At the age of 18, Klatzkin went to Germany, first to Frankfurt on the Main and then to Marburg, where he studied philosophy under Hermann Cohen. He received his doctorate from the University of Berne in 1912. In the following years Klatzkin was active in Germany as a writer for Hebrew periodicals, including Ha-Zeman, Ha-Shiloah, and Ha-Tekufah, and as editor of Die Welt, the organ of the Zionist Organization, and later in Heidelberg, of the Freie Zionistische Blaetter. From 1912 to 1915 he was director of the Jewish National Fund in Cologne. From 1915 to 1919 he edited the Swiss Bulletin Juif, which covered world events of special relevance to Jews during World War I and established the publishing firm Al ha-Mishmar, which issued a series of books on Jewish problems in French and German. In Berlin Klatzkin founded another publishing house, Eshkol, and continued writing for the Jewish press. In 1924 he and his lifelong friend Nahum Goldmann initiated the Encyclopaedia Judaica, of which ten volumes appeared between 1928 and 1934. Two volumes of a parallel Hebrew edition, Enziklopedyah Yisreelit, were issued in 192932. Klatzkin acted as editor in chief in cooperation with leading Jewish scholars
Klatzkin was a student of philosophy as well as a brilliant Hebrew essayist. In philosophy Klatzkin opposed his teacher Cohen, whose philosophy and interpretation of Judaism he submitted to searching criticism in the monograph Hermann Cohen. He also devoted a critical study to Spinoza, Baruch Spinoza, in which he stressed the Jewish influences in his intellectual background and style; he translated Spinozas Ethics from the Latin to Hebrew as Torat ha-Middot. Klatzkin developed his own philosophy, which may be described as vitalistic, emphasizing the biological, instinctive aspect of life rather than the intellectual one, in Sheki'at ha-? Ayyim, and in Der Erkenntnistrieb als Lebens und Todesprinzip (Sole and Scheps in EJ, 2007) . SUBJECT(S) : Jewish Philosophy. Ex-library markings. Browning to pages. Mild edgewear. Minimal staining. Later blue boards. 4to. 4, x, 438 pages; 25 cm. In Hebrew with Latin title page. This is the somewhat ironically subtitled Additions to Alexander Kohuts Aruch Completum. Part of the series: Publications of the Alexander Kohut Memorial Foundation. Vol. VIII. Alexander Kohut was a rabbi and orientalist...He called his work Aruch Completum or `Aruk ha-Shalem, and its production occupied twenty-five years of his life. The first four volumes were printed during his residence in Hungary, and the last four during his sojourn in America, covering a period of fourteen years (Vienna, 1878-92) ; the supplement appearing from a New York press; and the whole work aggregating more than 4, 000 double-column pages. Seven manuscripts of the `Aruk were used by the editor in determining the etymology of the words, and countless doubtful and corrupted passages in the Talmud were thus corrected and restored. Kohut identified in an elaborate special study (printed in the supplement) the often unacknowledged sources of Nathan ben Jehiels information, though everywhere defending him against the charge of plagiarism. He was connected with the meteorological observatory of the United States Lake Survey District in 1866, and engaged in researches in microscopic photography during 1869 and 1870. For this he received the John Scott Legacy medal at the Franklin Institute in 1897. He invented a new process of intaglio engraving, the photo-mezzotint, in 1889. In 1896 he invented a new method of etching, the Levy acid blast, for which he received the Elliott Cresson gold medal at the Franklin Institute in 1899. He was awarded a medal and diploma at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, and decorations and (a) diploma from the Imperial Photographic Society of Moscow

THE JEWISH CHRONICLE. VOL. III-IV
1st Edition. Later Cloth. 8vo. 2 volumes: [vi], 384, [376] pages ; 22 cm. In February of 1820, a cohort of clergymen and lay leaders gathered in New York City to launch a new, multidenominational, nationwide missionary project called The American Society for Meliorating the Condition of the Jews. The Society was spearheaded by Joseph Samuel Christian Frederick Frey, a former rabbinical student who had converted to Christianity as a young man in his native Germany. Before immigrating to the United States, Frey had spent some time as a missionary in England where he helped to found the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews. As the groups popularity grew among the Lutheran and Reformed communities who had built the organization, Anglican members wrested control of the leadership and expelled nonconformists. Rejected from his lifes work, Frey traveled to the United States to start again. In New York, Frey became involved with the citys Presbyterian community and began preaching in a city church. Once settled in the community and with the urging of friends and local clergymen, he revisited his pet project to evangelize Jews. Freys idea to build an organization to preach to Jews appealed to his American Presbyterian colleagues and quickly attracted interest from members of other Protestant denominations, including a number of influential political and religious leaders such as John Quincy Adams, Peter Jay, and the presidents of Yale, Princeton, and Rutgers: Jeremiah Day, Ashbel Green, and Philip Milledoler.
