WOOLF Virginia.
Jacob's Room.
Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press Richmond. 1922. First edition: one of about forty ''A Subscriber'' copies with the printed and autograph slip to this effect tipped onto the front free endpaper. Octavo. 290 pages. 14-page publishers' catalogue at rear. Mustard cloth with title label to spine. The label in this copy is inscribed by Virginia Woolf to Mrs Arnold-Forster who is better known to literary history under her maiden name Ka Cox Katherine Laird Cox. She had been one of the more important of Rupert Brooke's lovers with their break-up in 1912 creating such emotional turmoil in him that he fled abroad. The rift occurred early that year at Lulworth where a group of Cambridge Fabians had gathered for a reading weekend. Cox confessed her growing attraction to the painter Henry Lamb and plunged Brooke into a confusion of sexual jealousy mingled with the conviction that it was the manipulations of Lytton Strachey that had brought about this disaster. Later Brooke wrote from Cannes to Virginia Woolf ''What tormented and crucified figures we literary people are! God! How I hate the healthy unimaginative hard shelled dilettanti like James Strachey and Ka. It was a pity you couldn't come to the House Party long long ago at Lulworth - not that you'd have enjoyed it: it was too horrible. But you might have made all the difference.'' Cox went on to marry the painter and writer Will Arnold-Forster. She died of a stroke in 1938. Ka Cox was always a close friend of Virginia Woolf regularly appearing in the Diaries and Letters; in fact it was later in that fateful year 1912 that she nursed Woolf through one of her more devastating mental collapses. Some spotting to free endpapers. Some small snags to tail of spine. Covers a bit marked and dusty. Very good. These subscriber copies were not issued in dustwrappers. Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, Richmond. hardcover

Jacob's Room & The Waves
Harcourt Brace & World New York: 1964. Softcover. Good condition. With regard to Jacob's Room "Here within the scope of one small book is compressed the whole life of Jacob Flanders. From a very small boy he passes through the scenes of childhood and young manhood until he loses his life in teh war. Instead of constructing the story with the heroic mood in view building up to a climax of sacrifice we feel we are seeing it almost as Jacob Flanders might have looked at his own lfe. Our memories are full of moments and hours - unheroic moments but moments nevertheless which stand vividly etched." - Boston Transcript As to The Waves "It is impossible to describe impossible to do more than salute the richness the strangeness the poetic illumination of this book. The characters are not analysed as in a laboratory: they are entered into intuited. In each soliloquy in this pattern of soliloquies we ourselves are the center. We are Bernard we are Susan but with this difference: that we have borrowed for a moment the lamp of genius and by this light of genius and by its light may read the secrets of our private universe." - Gerald Bullet New Statesman and Nature.
