Geen vensters en deuren van zalm en steur in de eerste helft van deze eeuw, maar wie het kon betalen, tafelde in stijl en met Bourgondische grandeur. Op gigantische cuisinieres bereidden potige keukenmeiden de beter keuken van toen: de lekkerste stukken rund- en kalfsvlees, wild, tarbot, zalm, oesters en kreeft, alles met veel boter en room. Wie in een werkmanswieg was neergelegd, moest zich met minder tevreden stellen. De gewone man leerde pap eten, en aardappelen met ajuisjus of een boterham met gebakken vet en bruine suiker. Alleen op zondag kwam er echt vlees op tafel. In de keuken van meesters en meiden gaat Diana de Keyzer op zoek naar klassenverschillen in de keuken van 1900 tot 1960. Op haar tocht laat ze zich vergezellen door getuigen met een bijzonder smaakgeheugen voor de tafels van weleer. Menu's en receptenschriften in zwierige letters vertellen over feesten en lekker eten.
