<p>London H. Hering n.d. 1857 First edition. Undated but the December 12 1857 issue of Bent's Literary Advertiser lists the book as recently published. The identity of the poet is unclear though a children's phonic reading book published in 1876 reprints the poem and attributes it to a Frances S. Hodgson not to be confused of course with Secret Garden author Frances E. Hodgson Burnett. Publisher's color-printed white pictorial boards with blue cloth spine. Pale yellow endpapers. . Oblong quarto. . Richly color printed on every leaf. Illumination inspired by the work of Owen Jones and Noel Humphreys. The designs incorporate medieval illumination-inspired initial letters and decorative bands. Text in Gothic script. Foxing to boards and some edgewear. Contemporary ink ownership signature Eliza Maude Widdas to front flyleaf and twentieth century bookplate Edward J. Law to front pastedown. Very clean and bright throughout. A very good copy of a scarce book. We could not locate much information on Elizabeth Howard-Vyse née Seymour 1815 – 1892 and Fanny Lucy Cecilia Greville 1831 – 1912 in the sources available to us. Howard-Vyse also published a travel account A Winter in Tangier and Home Through Spain 1882. This appears to be Greville's only published book. Howard-Vyse was married to Lt. Col. George Howard-Vyse at the time the present work was published; the couple lived in Windsor which was likely also the home of Greville who was the daughter of a Vice-Admiral in the British Navy. Henry Hering 1814 – 1893 was a publisher society photographer and the last in a family line of bookbinders. Though his primary business venture was not printing he did dabble in printing religious texts and gift books often with his partner Remington and was a promoter of Achille Colas' relief printing process.</p> H. Van de Putte Baldisseroni de Nestele spellings of these names somewhat elastic. N.d. circa 1860. A fabulous collection of hand-colored plates of the popular Belgian beach resort with a mix of character studies mostly of the local non-fashionable citizenry humorous genre scenes and views of the beach the architecture the beachgoers the sea. 52 plates in all all but one of which is hand-colored the final plate is a folding tinted panorama of the beach looking in from the sea . Some of the beach scenes are evocative of Boudin. The mix of humor and more sober portraits lends a balance from which we can better approximate the culture and atmosphere at this early destination resort. And through the pictures we can sense the uneasy embrace of the vacationing bathers with the sea. The colored plates are all 13.5 by 10 inches or 34 by 25 cm including their margins. The plates are mostly clean but there is some finger soiling and the like in the margins and a few plates have chips and small chunks of card missing never affecting the images. Rebacked with attractive green morocco. The contemporary cloth boards are soiled with a few minor edge dings. No title and no evidence there ever was one. <br/><br/> J. Buffa unknown books

This mid-Victorian time period was the heyday of chromolithography printing with this a brilliant example. Embossed cloth decorated in gilt and green with gilt lettering. Lovely example of Victorian binding beveled edges endpapers toned slight toning to a few fore-edges not affecting plates which are brilliant and clean. Publisher's red cloth gilt decoration and title on front cover and spine.<br/> <br/> A delightful volume of lithographic plates by the Junior Etching Club a prestigious organization instrumental in the revival of etching in late-Victorian England with illustrations by James McNeil Whistler and others.<br/> <br/> 'Passages from Modern English Poets was issued by Day and Son in 1862 in a large octavo. In 1876 another edition in large quarto with etchings transferred to stone and printed as lithographs was published by William Tegg. In this notable volume Millais is represented by Summer Indolence a most graceful study of a girl lying on her back in a meadow with a small child who is wearing a daisy chain seated at her side. Mr. J. McNeill Whistler contributes two delightful landscapes The Angle and A River Scene. "Summer Indolence" by famed Pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millais derives from a figure in Millais's painting "Spring Apple Blossoms." The Etching Revival and Pre-Raphaelite Movement shared many comonalities as new artistic forms in the Victorian Era. These groups held artists in common as well as close ties with literature especially poetry.
