Edward Lear 1812-1888 although being an artist and illustrator himself is remembered mostlhy today for his nonsensical works particularly his limericks. One of the most recognizable of these is "The Owl and the Pussycat" who "dined on mince and slices of quince which they ate with a runcible spoon."

"The Jumblies" was the first poem in Lear's "Book of Nonsense" published in 1846. Per the dust jacket flap Edward Gorey decided to illustrate this poem because it "was taught to me by my grandfather when I was four or five and it has always been one of my favourites."

Edward St. John Gorey 1925-2000 had a distinctive style evocative of a mystical gothic Victorian era and his vast body of work includes over one hundred books written by himself as well as those by many well-known authors such as T. S. Eliot Charles Dickens Lewis Carroll H. G. Wells and Virginia Woolf n. b. info from the Edward Gorey House website - and of course this work. Gorey dedicated the book "for Foss" Lear's cat who "died in 1886 and was buried with some ceremony in a garden at Villa Tennyson" n.b. quote from Wiki.

___DESCRIPTION: In a reinforced library binding of tan cloth over boards Gorey illustration in black and white on the front board with decorative lettering black lettering on the spine illustrated title page with Gorey's signature above his printed name through which he drew a line per usual each stanze of the poem printed on the versos left-hand side with Gorey's corresponding illustration on the opposite page recto of the following page; oblong sixmo 6 1/8" tall and 9 1/8" wide unpaginated with 24 leaves including free endpapers. The dust jacket shows the original price of $2.95 mirrors the book on the panels and spine front flap a short summary by the publisher back flap with four Gorey characters.

___CONDITION: Volume fine with clean boards straight corners without rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; perhaps a light speck or two on the light binding else fine. LORRAIN, Jean; COURBOULEIX, Leon & FARNETI, Carlo (illustrators).
La Maison Philibert.
Paris Javal & Bourdeaux 1928. . Limited edition one of 50 copies on japon impérial with with an extra suite and a copper plate by Courbouleix and extra volume of original drawings by Carlo Farneti and Andre Dignimont; 4to 35 x 28 cm; text illustrated with 30 in-text colour etchings a la poupée and a suite with four additional states first state sans remarque avec remarque en noir and avec remarque en sanguine both with the original publisher's wrappers vol. II with 90 signed colour drawings avec remarque by Carlo Farnetti to illustrate an unpublished edition of the work 6 watercolours on thick paper signed by Dignimont 27 drawings mostly signed some hand-coloured by the same and over 100 proof sheets in colour and black and white after Dignimont also to illustrate a previously published edition of the work; both housed in modern maroon morocco boxes.
One of 50 copies with an extra suite of plates and a copper plate. This copy also includes a collection of original drawings from two other artists

Written by Jean Lorrain born Paul Duval and originally published in 1904 La Maison Philibert revolves around a Parisian brothel of the belle epoque. Although prostitution and debauchery was not an uncommon theme in fin de siecle literature Lorrain had his own reputation for being particularly outrageous in both his writings and his real life escapades. The erotic novel is here illustrated with 30 etchings with a suite of additional four states by Courbouleix.

The second volume contains a large collection of drawings to illustrate the same work by two other artists. Carlo Farnetti 1892-1961 Neapolitan by birth moved to Paris where he illustrated works by Zola Baudelaire and Poe. He was later comissioned by Javal & Bordeaux to illustrate Les Cent Nouvelles but his drawings for La Maison Philibert were never published - making this collection of original drawings accordingly rare.

André Dignimont a 'figure notable de Montmatre' was celebrated for perfectly capturing feminine beauty. The present volume contains a vast amount of proofs and signed drawings by Dignimont to illustrate an edition of La Maison Philibert that was published in 1925 by Collection des Arts.
Paris, Javal & Bourdeaux, 1928. unknown
