Massimiliano Porturri deve scrivere un libro sulle donne, ma le "sue" donne non gli consentono di fare scelte nette: vogliono tutte un ruolo e lo assillano. L'autore cede, le accontenta. E scrive settanta storie brevissime, ma lunghissime come altrettanti romanzi. A cominciare da quella di Virna, a 15 anni attrice dell'amore. Continuando con Chanit, la donna-giraffa. Per finire, con le tre protagoniste di un singolare e sexy modo di leggere i libri. Viene fuori un affresco evocativo di caratteri, sogni e fantasmi, che dipingono una femminilità talora intima, talora ruvida nella sua quotidiana realtà, talora eterea e surreale. Un inno dolce e ironico alla forza dell'altra metà del cielo.

È proprio con questi ultimi, "i tre moschettieri", che Eva cerca un'evasione dalle difficoltà della vita familiare, attraversando gli ultimi anni dell'infanzia per entrare nell'adolescenza con bravate, corse in bici, esplorazioni del mondo e, progressivamente, della sessualità. Ma Pim e Laurens forse non possono salvare Eva dalla solitudine, e l'amicizia comincia infatti a incrinarsi quando a scuola arriva la bellissima e spietata Elisa. Cosa spinge Eva a tornare a Bovenmeer? Qual è il tragico segreto di questa cittadina, in apparenza normale, e del cuore di Eva?

Blind stamp on front free endpaper and following blank of the R.R. News Co. of London Ontario. Only novel by this Newark Ohio author first published Boston 1880 Wright III 5139. Front cover gives her name as "Miss M. Sprague". Also seen in maroon cloth and in blue cloth with a different spine device. First Canadian issue. Hardcover. Belfords, Clarke & Co.
