Korovine designed costumes for productions of Russian operas including Borodin's Prince Igor Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina and Rimsky-Korsakov's Sadko and Le Coq d'Or.<br/><br/>"Konstantine Korovine is one of the most famous of Russia's twentieth-century stage designers. He made his debut as a theatrical painter in 1885 when he executed the sets and costumes for the production of Snegurochka at Savva Mamontov's Private Opera after Vasnetsov's designs and thereafter he emerged rapidly as an independent stage designer - decorating according to one souce 80 operas 37 ballets and 17 dramas during his lifetime. Korovine brought to the Russian stage a vibrancy and richness that was lacking in the traditional Imperial theaters. He felt more at ease when called upon to design operas and ballets treating of Russian history and legend such as Prince Igor Sadko and The Golden Cockerel and he designed sets and costumes for such spectacles at home and abroad." ELLIS Havelock 1859 1939.
Studies in the Psychology of Sex; Sexual Inversion.
Philadelphia:: F.A. Davis 1908. 1908. 8vo. xi 1 272 pp. Index. Brown cloth; joint cracked rubbed. Ownership signature of Maurice Tweedie; USC Medical Library. Good. Second edition. "In 1897 Havelock Ellis published Sexual Inversion the first of his six volume Studies in the Psychology of Sex. The book was first serious study of homosexuality published in Britain. It was based partly as a result of his awareness of the homosexuality of his wife and friends such as Edward Carpenter. Ellis admitted in his autobiography: "Homosexuality was an aspect of sex which up to a few years before had interested me less than any and I had known very little about it. But during those few years I had become interested in it. Partly I had found that some of my most highly esteemed friends were more or less homosexual like Edward Carpenter not to mention Edith." According to a letter he wrote to Arthur Symonds Edith Lees Ellis promised to "supply cases of inversion homosexuality in women from among her own friends." / Phyllis Grosskurth "has argued: "Sexual Inversion was an unprecedented book. Never before had homosexuality been treated so soberly so comprehensively so sympathetically. To read it today is to read the voice of common sense and compassion; to read it then was for the great majority to be affronted by a deliberate incitement to vice of the most degrading kind. . . . That such sexual proclivity is not determined by suggestion accident or historical conditioning is apparent he argues from the fact that it is widespread among animals and that there is abundant evidence of its prevalence among various nations at all periods of history."" – spartacus-educationaldotcom. It was the first treatise on forensic odontology and according to Vale History of Bitemark Evidence it was not until 1966 that the second major text on the subject Gustafson's treatise Forensic odontology appeared after this masterpiece. This text provoked a great sensation and had a great influence on the development of this discipline throughout the world. / Oscar Amoedo y Valdes 1863-1945 a native of Matanzas Cuba graduated as a dental surgeon in Havana then took a degree from the New York Dental College. He moved to Paris in 1889 and decided to study medicine. Amoedo considered the creator of forensic odontology became professor at the Ecole Odontologique and president of the Odontological Society of France. During World War II the Germans imprisoned and transferred him in a concentration camp. Oscar Amoedo y Valdes died in Toulouse on September 27th 1945. He was 82 years old. It has filled in great gaps that existed as regards forensic identification." -- Brouardel July 7 1898. 12th International Congress in Moscow Amoedo recounted the mission of the dentists in identifying the corpses of the Bazar de la Charite disaster. / There are 52 detailed observations; The first of them concern victims of the fire of the Bazaar of Charity including that of the Duchess of Alencon transmitted by Davenport. BOREIN Edward 1872 1945
Navajo Visitors at Oraibi
1930. Etched signed lower right remarque of a cowboy on horseback in pencil lower left. Rare sepia printed example of a superb Edward Borein print signed and with a pencil drawn remarque.<br/> <br/>Edward Borein 1872-1945 was born near San Francisco. He showed a very early talent for drawing which developed with very little training. He spent a number of years working as a cowboy throughout the southwest and Mexico sketching at the same time. His career as an artist evolved beginning with magazine illustrations and going on to more ambitious oil and watercolor paintings. He spent a number of years in New York City where he met Charles Russell and Will Rogers then returned to California based in Santa Barbara as of 1921. By this time he was working largely in etching a method he perfected always working with cowboys Indians and the West as his subject matter. This fine sepia printed etching of the Navajo is especially desirable because of its setting in Oraibi an ancient continuously inhabited Hopi town in Navajo County Arizona in the northeastern portion of the state. The etching is unusual too for the mild psychological drama evoked: the four Navajo riders face in various directions as if they were uncomfortable or uncertain none is actually looking at the village and one is prepared to ride away.<br/> <br/>Galvin 210. unknown books

Lev L'vovich Tolstoy 1869 1945
Eight ALS by Lev L'vovich Tolstoy 1869-1945 the son of Lev Tolstoy to Jacques Patin 1883-1948 the editor of Figaro
Paris and Wiesbaden: 1921-23. Eight single leaves some folded. Very good with exception of one letter with tear and some loss to text. The son of Lev Tolstoy Lev L'vovich Tolstoy was a firm believer in his father's ideals in his youth but later became increasingly opposed to his philosophical and ethical ideas. He studied sculpture with Rodin and tried without success to become a published writer as well as writing about his childhood and impressions of his father. In 1918 he emigrated living in Paris before eventually settling in Sweden. The letters included here date to a period when he wrote articles on his father and was making a difficult living as a journalist. Among other things they contain his negative reaction to his mother's memoirs discuss his own writing and plans to publish his recollections and detail his financial woes.

Nakada Juji 1870 1939
Tainstvennaia natsiia Iaponiia The mysterious nation - Japan; An Unknown Nation
Harbin: Mech Gedeona 1933. Octavo 20 Ã 14 cm. Original printed wrappers; 119 pp. Very good; text evenly toned due to stock; very discrete repairs to spine extremities. Russian translation of this 1933 work by Nakada a Japanese protestant minister and the first bishop of the Japan Holiness Church. Influenced by the Christian Zionist William E. Nakada's theory was used in part to justify the nationalist and militaristic discourse of the Japanese Empire prior to World War II. Nakada was one of the most influential evangelists in the 1920s who also toured the United States but his controversial views later led to a schism in the Holiness Church. SALTEN Felix 1869 1945
Autograph postcard signed in full to Hermine Lorch Austrian author of children's books
In black ink. Dated Vienna January 6 1923. With Salten's stamp with return Vienna address. In German with translation.<br/><br/>Salten writes to fellow children's book author Hermine Lorch after reading one of her manuscripts:<br/><br/>"The fairy tales are very pretty very sentimental and also of the type that I like. I truly believe that they will find readers."<br/><br/>From the collection of the distinguished American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne b. 1934. <br/><br/>Uniformly browned; light scattered foxing. Austrian author Felix Salten is best known for his novel Bambi: A Life in the Woods 1923 which was the basis for the Disney film. His stories also inspired the Disney films Perri 1957 and The Shaggy Dog 1959. Apart from this legacy Salten was a prominent art and theater critic in Vienna. As a Jew living in Vienna Salten's books were banned in 1936 and he fled to Switzerland following the German annexation.<br/><br/>Hermine Lorch was also a children's author in Austria but there is little record of her work. It is possible that she was a victim of the Holocaust as there is someone of that name listed in the database of the Holocaust Museum. <br/><br/>"Horne had a voice of extraordinary range rich and tangy in timbre with a stentorian chest register and an exciting top. In concert she once achieved the feat of singing in a single programme Rossini arias and Brünnhilde's Immolation Scene proof of her exceptional versatility. Throughout her lengthy career she was an admired recitalist singing lieder mélodies Spanish and American songs with equal aplomb." Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online. unknown books
