Mascagni conducted both performances. It was the composer's only opera with a French libretto.<br/><br/>"Stracciari's mellow velvety voice coloured and resonant over its whole range with an extended and penetrating upper register made him between 1905 and 1915 the rival of Titta Ruffo and Pasquale Amato. But thanks to a technique characteristic of the best traditions of the 19th century he excelled in works which allowed him to display his courtly enunciation smooth singing elegant phrasing and musical delicacy." MASCAGNI Pietro 1863 1945
Autograph letter signed "P Mascagni" to an unidentified impresario in Vienna addressed "Mio Caro
2 pp. Quarto. Dated Rome October 8 1908. On stationery with "Corso Vitt. Eman. 154. Telefono Interprov. 458. Per telegrammi: Mascagni Roma" printed in red at upper left. In Italian with translation. <br/><br/>Mascagni responds to a proposal to write a "true and authentic" operetta. He likes the idea but would encounter difficulties "of the moral-artistic order" and especially with his publishers Choudens and Sonzogno. As indicated by his use of "tu" Mascagni and his correspondent were on familiar terms.<br/><br/>"But there is still a material difficulty represented in my contracts with the publishers Sonzogno in Milan and Choudens in Paris who will not want to adjust their contracts if they knew I worked for an impresario from Vienna before having delivered as per contract the operas that I must write for them . As you've seen I haven't spoken of monetary interests . but profits have never been a difficulty for the closing of my business deals."<br/><br/>Slightly worn; creased at folds. <br/><br/>Together with: <br/>A postcard photograph of five gentlemen on a street corner dated Paris 1911 on mount: Mascagni the music publisher Edoardo Sonzogno the writer Gabriele d'Annunzio and two unidentified others. Mascagni distinguished as both a composer and conductor is perhaps best-known for his opera Cavalleria rusticana which "was enormously successful from its first performance at the Costanzi in Rome in 1890. From then on Mascagni spent the rest of his long career treating a wide variety of subjects. His next opera L'amico Fritz 1891 consolidated his success with Roman audiences and revealed his lyrical vein. This fluent rustic comedy was successful particularly because melodic vitality - the outstanding merit of Cavalleria - was combined with a more elegant harmonic idiom." By the time this letter was written Mascagni had also garnered considerable acclaim in Vienna Paris and London. Michele Girardi in Grove Music Online. unknown books

Autograph musical quotation notated signed and dated 1906
In black ink on dark ivory paper ca. 60 x 149 mm. With small vintage head-and-shoulders photograph ca. 24 x 22 mm. of the noted English conductor laid down to upper margin.<br/><br/>First two measures from the Overture to Wagner's Tannhäuser. Tannhäuser Wagner."<br/><br/>Slightly soiled; trimmed; verso with minor annotations in pencil and remnants of former mount to upper edge. ". In 1893 Godfrey undertook to organize a band for the Winter Gardens Bournemouth. This was later augmented to become the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra of which Godfrey remained conductor until he retired in 1934. Despite heavy administrative commitments and conducting engagements elsewhere he maintained a high standard of performance not only of works from the conventional repertory as well as neglected symphonies by composers such as Bruch Raff Svendsen and Saint-Saëns but also of important works by British composers. Parry Stanford Elgar Ethel Smyth and Mackenzie were all invited to conduct at Bournemouth and after the formation of a municipal choir with 250 members in 1911 the Winter Gardens festivals became famous. Godfrey was knighted in 1922 and elected FRAM in 1923. His Memories and Music London 1924 is informative on several aspects of the 'English musical renaissance'." E.D. BITTNER Julius 1874 1939
Postcard photograph signed
In a music studio seated at an Ehrbar piano.<br/>With an autograph note signed to verso dated Vienna September 24 1936 addressed to the Colombian musicologist Otto de Greiff. <br/>With Bittner's return address stamp in purple ink to upper left corner "Julius Bittner Wien IX Dietrichsteingasse 10." <br/><br/>Very slightly worn. In very good condition overall. "Although Bittner's output embraces orchestral and chamber music a large-scale Mass and several lieder and choruses he devoted most of his creative energies towards writing for the stage. His passion for opera was fuelled by attending a performance of Lohengrin at the age of 12 and following the precedent set by Wagner he wrote the librettos for 15 of his own operas. Although his early attempts at the genre were not performed publicly his friendship with the conductor Bruno Walter proved decisive in establishing his reputation primarily with the opera Der Musikant produced in Vienna in 1910. His most successful work was Das höllisch Gold 1916 in which he emulated the example of his older compatriot Wilhelm Kienzl in attempting to merge the principles of German Singspiel with a post-Wagnerian harmonic language." Dreiser Theodore Herman Albert 1871 1945
Jennie Gerhardt
433 pages with frontispiece. Small octavo 7 1/2" x 5 1/4" bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover with black design in original jacket. First edition in first state binding and second state text.<br /><br /><i>Jennie Gerhardt</i> was Theodore Dreiser's second novel and his first true commercial success. Today it is generally regarded as one of his three best novels along with <i>Sister Carrie</i> and <i>An American Tragedy</i>. As submitted to Harper and Brothers in 1911 Jennie Gerhardt was a powerful study of a woman tragically compromised by birth and fate. Harpers agreed to publish the book but was nervous about its subject matter and moral stance. Jennie has an illegitimate child by one man and lives out of wedlock with another - but Dreiser does not condemn her for her behavior. As a requirement for publication Harpers insisted on cutting and revising the text. Although Dreiser fought against many of the cuts and succeeded in restoring some material Harpers shortened the text by 16000 words and completely revised its style and tone. These changes ultimately transformed Jennie Gerhardt from a blunt carefully documented work of social realism to a touching love story merely set against a social background. Passages critical of organized religion and of the institution of marriage were reduced and altered. Perhaps most important Jennie's point of view - her innate romantic mysticism - was largely edited out of the text. As a consequence the central dialectic of the novel was skewed and the narrative thrown out of balance.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Cloth spine lightly sunned with some rubbing previous owner's signatures to front blank and rear paste down. Jacket panels and spine toned and chipped tears at jacket joints and edges else a very good copy in about a very good infrequently found jacket. Harper & Brothers hardcover books

Ex library Carnegie Institution of Washington Mount Wilson Observatory with call number gilt stamped on spine and library blind-stamp on front free end paper. Clean copy. FINE. RARE. FIRST EDITION. This is the first paper in the Zeitschrift fur physik in which Geiger and Bothe published the results of their collaboration which began in November 1913 at the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt in Berlin. In 1908 Geiger and Rutherford investigated the charge and nature of the particle. They devised an electrical technique in order to count the individual particles and compare results with those obtained by Erich Regener who used the scintillation technique. Their ionization chamber was a cylinder at low pressure with a thin wire stretched coaxially. The wall of the cylinder had an entrance window at one end and was at high negative potential to the wire. An particle entering parallel to the wire generated a secondary avalanche multiplying the primary ionization effect a thousandfold. The resulting voltage step on the central wire was measured by a sensitive electrometer. In October 1912 Geiger went to Berlin and continued experiments on the counting of particles. Varying the form and dimensions of the central electrode he found an arrangement which came to be known as the Spitzenzahler or "point counter" since "the whole working of the apparatus depends on the point of the needle." The great advantage of this device was that in addition to particles it could for the first time count particles as well as other types of radiation. Geiger became the editor of the Zeitschrift fur physik beginning in 1936. DSB V pp. 330-333. Zeitschrift fur physik, 6 (1921). hardcover books

Fore edge Painting. Signed Miss C. B. CURRIE CHARNWOOD Godfrey Benson 1st Baron Lord 1864 1945.
Abraham Lincoln.
London:: Constable & Company Ltd. 1916. 1916. Series: Makers of the nineteenth century edited by Basil Williams. Crown 8vo. viii 479 1 pp. Frontispiece portrait of Abraham Lincoln at Springfield index large folding map. Specially bound for Sotheran by Riviere & Son in full black gilt-stamped morocco all edges gilt; neatly rebacked preserving the original spine. Preserved with the original chemise and cloth slipcase with gilt-stamped calf spine label: "ABRAHAM LINCOLN - LORD CHARNWOOD - 1916 - FORE-EDGE PAINTING". This is also a very rare specimen with the original chemise and box extant. Provenance: ownership names of R. Joseph Rich Margaret Rich Carr; Joseph Sampsell Carr. Fine. WITH A FORE-EDGE PAINTING BY MS. C. B. CURRIE showing "a view of Harper's Ferry W. Virginia." "This is No. 145 of the Books with Fore-edge Paintings by Miss Currie. . . " Painted ca. 1928/9. See: Weber p. 341 #145 was previously unknown. Currie painted a scene of Harper's Ferry on the Life of John Brown See Weber A8 p. 348. SIGNED IN INK AT FOOT OF LIMITATION PAGE BY C. B. CURRIE. / In all about 172 Currie fore-edge painting were painted. Each is numbered in consecutive order with her known active period of painting fore-edges from c.1909/10-1929/33. All Currie fore-edge paintings are rare. / Miss Caroline Billin Curry aka "Miss. C.B. Currie" 1849-1940 was famous for painting both ivory miniatures and on fore-edge paintings exclusively for Sotheran's and strictly on Riviere bindings. Currie is important as being the only known artist to have signed all her work and numbered the pieces. She was highly touted in her lifetime as an artist who was singled-out for her skill and exquisite artistry that she thereby became the first artist so-named by Sotheran prominently in their catalogue series. Indeed she was a close associate and friend of the shop manager Mr. John Harrison Stonehouse and his wife Currie was named in their will. Even despite her prominence Currie's correct full name was a mystery until very recently. See Weber. This particular specimen was 1 previously unknown to myself 2 preserved the most-frequently missing chemise and 3 a clear provenance to this copy is noted the only one so located by myself. / PROVENANCE: Oddly this is the first known Currie fore-edge painting with provenance that is understood to be after the painting of the Harper's Ferry scene. The importance of that is the relationship of the ownership of a book to the date of the painting or otherwise owning a book before a fore-edge painting is applied to the book. In this case the ownership is surely after the work of Currie. Three persons' names are found in the volume: Joseph Sampsell Carr may have lived in Chicago Illinois. Margaret Rich Carr may have been Margaret Lee Smith Rich Carr 1917-1981 buried in Lubbock Lubbock County Texas. R. Joseph Rich may have been associated with Jefferson Medical College Hospital Philadelphia. REFERENCE: Jeff Weber Annotated Dictionary of Fore-edge Painting & Binders 2010. New York World's Fair 1939 40
Archive of photographs depicting the construction of the sewer system on the grounds of the 1939-40 New York World's Fair
New York 1938. 87 silver print photographs each captioned in the negative. Each measuring approx. 7 3/4 x 9 5/8 inches. Mounted on linen at a period date with two-ring punched linen guards at the left margin. Many stamped on verso "Official Photograph / President Borough of Queens. Fine. 87 silver print photographs each captioned in the negative. Each measuring approx. 7 3/4 x 9 5/8 inches. Mounted on linen at a period date with two-ring punched linen guards at the left margin. Many stamped on verso "Official Photograph / President Borough of Queens" This photographic archive documents the construction of a massive double-barrel sewer line running from the World's Fair grounds largely in the vicinity of Grand Central Parkway and Roosevelt Avenue. Many of the images are dated in the negative depicting the surveying of the region in June 1937 to ground breaking in July through completion of the lower barrel in September and the work on the upper barrel through November of that year. Additional photographs depict a second sewer project on the grounds through March 1938 including images of the completed tunnel with a group of well-dressed gentleman standing inside.<br/><br/>"The magnitude of the work may be appreciated when it is realized that on a site previously considered useless except as a rubbish dump a city has been constructed to supply a million people all the business and living facilities except shelter. Its construction therefore involved all braches of municipal enginineering architectural construction terminals for rapid transit and bus transportation internal travel bridge construction landscape engineering utility construction and management for light power and water supply and general sanitation" -- Henry Welles Durham "Construction of the New York World's Fair" in The Military Engineer Vol. XXXI Sept.-Oct. 1939. <br/><br/>Construction and development of the site was undertaken by the Fair Corporation's own engineers and workers but also by outside contractors the latter which was evidently the case here as many of the images are identified by contract and project numbers. Chief Engineer and Director of Construction John P. Hogan likened the work on the site to "an expeditionary force of an army in the field." In the end the World's Fair grounds included some 50 miles of water and sewage lines and would be the second most expensive fair of all time. 1 unknown books

Train Arthur Cheney 1875 1945
Paper Profits. A Novel of Wall Street
New York: Horace Liveright 1930. First edition. 347 pp. 8vo. Original black cloth pictorial dust jacket designed by Hynd. Very good with rubbing to spine titles stain to top edge a few chips to jacket with partial loss to publisher's imprint but a nicer than usual example of a fragile jacket. First edition. 347 pp. 8vo. An Outstanding Association Copy. Inscribed on the ffep "To Edwin Lefevre with the sincere regards of Arthur Train March 24 1930." A better association copy of this title is hard to imagine. Lefévre was the preiminant documentarian of Wall Street and its personalities in the thirty years leading up to the crash of 1929. His Reminiscences of a Stock Operator 1923 a fictionalized account of the life of stockbroker Larry Livermore is perhaps the most famous Wall Street novel ever written; his other works included Wall Street Stories 1901 and The Making of a Stockbroker 1925. Arthur Train began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan before becoming a best-selling author of court-room thrillers. In Paper Profits he turned his attention to Wall Street and the crash the year after it happened. Horace Liveright unknown books
