Romance of Horn is an Anglo-Norman literature romans d'aventure "romance and adventure" tale written around 1170 by an anonymous author named "Thomas". The hero named Horn is the son of the king A�lof of Suddene probably somewhere near Devon. Horn becomes orphaned when he is set adrift in a boat from the shores of southern England and reaches Brittany where he grows to manhood and falls in love with the king's daughter Rigmel. There he defends the kingdom from invading Saracens but the king banishes him to Ireland. In Ireland he falls in love once more with the king's daughter but then finally returns to Brittany and after a series of adventures marries Rigmel and eventually assumes the throne there. ‎Voici un ouvrage qui traite des croyances relatives au Sumangat, c'est-à-dire à l'« ensemble des esprits vitaux, au principe qui anime toutes les créatures vivantes ». L'auteur a donné le mot malais comme titre à son livre, bien que Sumangat rassemble, comme l'annonce dans la préface le professeur Massignon, les éléments d'une «enquête à la fois ethnologique, sociologique et psychologique» menée chez les Muong, les Thai et les Malais. Les Muong, qu'on pourrait nommer des Proto-Vietnamiens, sont répartis, en groupes plus ou moins densés, du Fleuve Rouge au Centre Annam ; les Thai se sont répandus de la frontière méridionale de Chine jusque dans l'Inde en d'innombrables groupes, dont deux, plus importants, ont formé les royaumes du Laos et de Thailande. On voit par là qu'il s'agit de l'Indochine géographique comprenant la péninsule malaise. Dans la première partie du livre, une brève analyse du brahmanisme, du bouddhisme et de l'islamisme qui ont influencé Thai et Malais prépare l'exposé de leurs conceptions de l'âme (c'est-à-dire des éléments de la vie – le Sumangat, en malais) et des soins qui lui sont nécessaires. Les pratiques de rappel et de réfection de l'âme qui en dérivent sont décrites dans la deuxième partie. En révélant la sympathie avec laquelle l'auteur les a étudiées, leur connaissance conduit à une compréhension plus large du domaine humain. — Par l'ethnologue Jeanne Cuisinier (1890-1964). Ses recherches sont encadrées et dirigées par Marcel Mauss et Paul Rivet, en particulier pour sa thèse, rédigée en 1943 et publiée en 1946. Dans "Sumangat, L'âme et son culte en Indochine et en Indonésie", un de ses ouvrages les plus ambitieux, elle cherche à travers l'étude des représentations et cultes des esprits en Asie du Sud-Est à explorer les contextes indiens et musulman et à élargir le cadre explicatif. L'ensemble de son œuvre associe analyses des rituels et des représentations religieuses. — "Dans un domaine où les chercheurs sont trop rares eu égard à son étendue vaste et diverse, l'Asie sud-orientale, Jeanne Cuisinier a été elle-même un chercheur exceptionnel. Elle a cherché à concilier les recherches locales sur petits groupes se prêtant aux monographies, avec la compréhension générale des cultures de la péninsule indochinoise et de l'archipel indonésien. En consacrant ses principales enquêtes tantôt au monde malais, à Kelantan dans la Péninsule malaise non loin de territoires de peuplement thaïlandais, tantôt à l'Indochine, avec son travail sur les Muang du Nord-Vietnam, elle n'a jamais perdu de vue l'histoire ni les problèmes de contacts. C'est pourquoi, dans d'autres ouvrages, comme “Sumangat, l'âme et son culte en Indochine et en Indonésie”, elle a consacré une première partie, près de la moitié du livre, à l'examen des notions d'origine étrangère, hindoues, bouddhiques, chinoises et islamiques, qui non seulement ont pu influer sur les formes observées, mais encore doivent entrer en ligne de compte pour juger des caractères soit purement locaux soit universellement humains des traits constatés. Sa sociologie, fondée d'une part sur l'enquête directe et d'autre part sur les rapprochements des résultats de cette enquête avec les données des civilisations historiques largement documentées par la philologie et l'histoire, a été plus descriptive et comparative que théoricienne..."
