brossura Hai mai incontrato un licantropo? Se la tua risposta è negativa sappi che non è così. Leggendo questo libro ti accorgerai di averne visti più di quanto immagini, perché sono tante le leggende, i luoghi, i documenti che ne parlano. I licantropi esistono fin dai tempi antichi, da quando i lupi erano creature di luce, protagonisti di un pantheon di antropomorfi che ha da sempre accompagnato uomini e dèi. Ma perché ci affascinano così tanto? Perché ci somigliano. Lupi e uomini hanno vissuto assieme alle divinità perdendo, ad un certo punto, questa condizione privilegiata a causa di una maledizione. L'uomo stesso, cadendo dal paradiso sulla Terra, è divenuto «mannaro», perché preda di fame, possessione, desideri bestiali. E così come il licantropo desidera tornare uomo, l'uomo vuole tornare Dio. Conoscere i lupi mannari corrisponde dunque a comprendere sé stessi e la propria natura bestiale e risvegliare la consapevolezza dell'origine primigenia, nascosta sotto la pelle, così come il licantropo la cela sotto la sua folta pelliccia. L'excursus proposto da questo libro permette dunque di intraprendere un viaggio non solo alla scoperta del lato oscuro dei licantropi, ma anche di quello luminoso. Il patto con l'uomo lupo, la Signora degli Animali, i santi cinocefali, i Benandanti o nati con la camicia, il lupo luminoso e quello seduttore, i Lupercali e i Versipellis, il sangue cattivo, il santuario del mal di Luna, l'origine della licantropia in Italia, i mannari come mariti, i metodi delle donne per difendersi dai loro attacchi notturni, san Lupo e la fame lupigna, sono solo alcuni degli argomenti che ti condurranno lungo un viaggio nel tempo e nello spazio, da antichi miti fino ai giorni nostri, per intraprendere una vera e propria riflessione su sé stessi, bucare la scorza e far emergere il lupo luminoso che è in noi. Perché il licantropo risponde sempre alla luce, quella della Luna così nascosta e fioca, ma così potente da riuscire a illuminare la notte.

New York: Delacorte Press 1972. Unpaginated picture book. Bound in green cloth printed with a design by the illustrator in black. Sturdy reinforced "library" binding is tight. Decorative endpapers as usual with library bindings are inside plain white endpapers which bear the bulk of the library signifiers card bar code tapestains. Boards have minor inconspicuous tape residue. Dust jacket has light wear/rubbing to extremities a couple tape stains on flap & spine label; dj clipped at top but price at bottom - overall looks very nice bright and clean as do the contents. The illustrations are placed within decorative borders rather reminiscent of Ivan Bilibin's woodcuts but the ink-and-colour treatment is more informal than woodcut and suits this hilarious tall tale very well indeed. 3rd Printing.
