Matthews Cornelius
HIAWATHA and Other Legends of the Wigwams of the Red American Indians
London: W. Swan Sonnenschein. 344 pages. No date but appears to be late 19th century. Illustrated with engravings including 5 full-page plates by anonymous artist. Library rebound in orange buckram with lettering and decoration in white; covers bright and clean with mild rubbing to extremities. Binding is tight spine square. Library markings as usual. Light smudging or spotting to some pages throughout unobtrusive except page 14 -19 have some small tears and paper damage rendering several words difficult to make out. Originally compiled by Henry Schoolcraft re-interpreted and developed by Matthews to "enable them as far as worthy to take a place with the popular versions of the Arabian Nights' Entertainments. and other tales of Europe and the East to which they bear a resemblance in romantic interest and quaint extravagance of fancy." How far they still resemble their First Nations originals I cannot say. Hard Cover. About Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Engravings. 4.25 x 6.5 in. 10.5cm x 16.5cm. Ex-Library. W. Cook Lyn; Davies Mary; French adaptation by Michiline St Cyr
Jolly Jean-Pierre / Voyage Extraordinaire de Jean-Pierre
Toronto: Burns and MacEachern Limited 1973. 35 pages. Bound in cloth printed in full colour with illustration of Jean-Pierre the voyageur. Extremities rubbed with minor colour loss; front board just barely bowed. Binding tight text pages clean and bright. Ex-library marks consist of inkstamps to edges and to prelims; half-title page is rippled at former site of pocket. A versified tall tale put into the mouth of a voyageur - Bilingual in English and French. The English version the original is the latest example I have seen of the genre of poetry purporting to represent the Habitant dialect in English. Cook does not attempt as did William Henry Drummond who invented of the genre to reproduce the "charming" pronunciation but in the 21st century such lines as "But suddenly I wake up fast! The boat she jump and spin - " leave me simply dumbstruck with amazement. The French version is an adaptation and renders the story in prose with considerably more detail and a more literary form "Soudain je sentis mordre l'hameon . Le canot sautait et dansait." In any case definitely a literary curiosity as a very late example of humourous but sympathetic Habitant patois poetry in English. By a distinguished Canadian children's author; we usually have a number of Lyn Cook books available please search our stock or enquire. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 10" x 8.25" 25.5cm x 21cm. Magical black-and-white illustrations by Caldecott winner Trina Schart Hyman whose grasp of Celtic lore has always been remarkable. A sound reading copy which looks quite presentable on the shelf. "Donald the shepherd's son learned many things from the stories told to him by the old man called the Bodach but he still did not learn the secret of the Walking Stones or the answer to the mystery of the black staff the Bodach carried. Then one day the Bodach used his strange gift of the Second Sight to foretell the future of the green Highland glen where he and Donald lived."
