‎Stanley, Keith‎

‎THE SHIELD OF HOMER Narrative Structure in the Iliad‎

‎Light bump to 1 corner. Faint foxing to top of textblock. Very light shelfwear to DJ. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 1.25 x 9.75 x 6.75 Inches; 492 pages; In this masterly interpretation of narrative sequence in the Iliad, Keith Stanley not only sharpens the current debate over the date and creation of the poem, but also challenges the view of this work as primarily a celebration of heroic force. He begins by studying the intricate ring-composition in the verses describing Achilles' shield, then extends this analysis to reveal the Iliad as an elaborate and self-conscious formal whole. In so doing he defends the hypothesis that the poem as we know it is a massive reorganization and expansion of earlier "Homeric" material, written in response to the need for a stable text for repeated performance at the sixth-century Athenian festival for the city's patron goddess. Stanley explores the arrangement of the poem's books, all unified by theme and structure, showing how this allowed for artistically satisfying and practically feasible recitation over a period of three or four days. Taking structural emphasis as a guide to poetic discourse, the author argues that the Iliad is not a poem of "might"--as opposed to the Odyssean celebration of "guile"--but that in advocating social and personal reconciliation the poem offers a profound indictment of a warring heroic society.‎

‎FROM GOOD GODDESS TO VESTAL VIRGINS Sex and Category in Roman Religion‎

‎Scholar's name to ffep (R. E. Fantham). Else book is fine. 1 small closed tear to DJ (1 cm). Else Very light shelfwear to DJ. ; 0.79 x 8.43 x 5.67 Inches; 207 pages; The role of women in Roman culture and society was a paradoxical one. They enjoyed social, material and financial independence yet they were denied basic constitutional rights. Although Roman history is not short of powerful female figures, such as Agrippina and Livia, their power stemmed from their associations with great men and was not officially recognized. Ariadne Staples' book examines how women in Rome were perceived both by themselves and by men through women's participation in Roman religion, as Roman religious ritual provided the single public arena where women played a significant formal role. From Good Goddess to Vestal Virgins argues that the ritual roles played out by women were vital in defining them sexually and that these sexually defined categories spilled over into other aspects of Roman culture, including political activity. Staples provides an arresting and original analysis of the role of women in Roman society, which challenges traditionally held views and provokes further questions.‎

‎Oxford University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1992. Hardcover. 0198147821 . Very light shelfwear to book. DJ has some creasing to front panel and sticker residue to rear panel. ; 1.18 x 8.75 x 5.75 Inches; 428 pages; This is a new translation of the Thebaid of Publius Papinius Statius an epic poem in twelve books completed in about AD 90. The Thebaid has been thought by many to stand second only to Virgil among Latin narrative poems. Its theme is the war between Eteocles and Polynices sons of Oedipus for the throne of Thebes. Rich in incident and always dramatic in tone it unfolds a panorama of human ambition and violence triumph and catastrophe. Though remaining within the Homeric and Virgilian tradition it achieves its own power and vitality in thought language and description. Held in high esteem and widely imitated in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance the Thebaid of Statius is not only a masterpiece of poetry but a compelling story at times horrifying noble and pathetic of humankind bound by the power of Fate. . ‎Princeton University Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1994. Hardcover. 0691032386 . Light shelfwear to book and DJ. ; 280 pages; Covering material as diverse as curse tablets coins tattoos and legal decrees Deborah Steiner explores the reception of writing in archaic and classical Greece. She moves beyond questions concerning ancient literacy and the origins of the Greek alphabet to examine representations of writing in the myths and imaginative literature of the period. Maintaining that the Greek alphabet was not seen purely as a means of transcribing and preserving the spoken word the author investigates parallels between writing and other signifiers such as omens tokens and talismans; the role of inscription in religious rites including cursing oath-taking and dedication; and perceptions of how writing functioned both in autocracies and democracies. Particularly innovative is the suggestion that fifth-century Greek historians and dramatists portrayed writing as an essential tool of tyrants who not only issue written decrees but also "inscribe" human bodies with brands and cut up land with compasses and rules. The despotic overtones associated with writing inform discussion of its function in democracies. Although writing could promote equal justice ancient sources also linked this activity with historical and mythical figures who opposed the populist regime. By examining this highly nuanced portrayal of writing Steiner offers a new perspective on ancient views of written law and its role in 5th-century Athenian democracy. . ‎Miti e misteri dell'antico Egitto‎

‎br.
