‎Beacon Press. Very Good. 1971. Paperback. 0807057959 . Creasing to spine including lower corner of fron wrap. Scholar's blindstamp and name to ffep Robert Brown. Minor shelfwear. ; The ancient Athenians were "quarrelsome as friends treacherous as neighbours brutal as masters faithless as servants shallow as lovers - all of which was in part redeemed by their intelligence and creativity". Thus writes Philip Slater in this classic work on narcissism and family relationships in 5th-century Athenian society. Exploring a rich corpus of Greek mythology and drama he argues that the personalities and social behaviour of the gods were neurotic and that their neurotic conditions must have mirrored the family life of the people who perpetuated their myths. The author traces the issues of narcissism to mother-son relationships focusing primarily on the literary representation of Hera and the male gods and showing how it related to devalued women raising boys in an ambitious society dominated by men. "The role of homosexuality in society fatherless families working mothers women's status and violence male pride and male bonding - all these find their place in Slater's analysis so honestly and carefully addressed that we see our own societal dilemmas reflected in archaic mythic narratives all the more clearly". ‎Slater, Philip E‎

‎The Glory of Hera. Greek Mythology and the Greek Family.‎

‎Boston; Beacon Press, 1971. XXVI; 513 S.; 20 cm; kart.‎

‎Gutes Ex.; Einband berieben; Ex. mit leichten Gebrauchsspuren. // Englisch. // Few objective portraits, and little objective data, exist to describe Athenian society during the fifth and fourth centuries, the so-called Golden Age in Greece. Contrary to conventional accounts of the period, which are rather appealing, Philip Slater argues that the Greeks were "quarrelsome as friends, treacherous as neighbors, brutal as masters, faithless as servants, shallow as lovers - all of which was in part redeemed by their intelligence and creativity." The mother-son relationship is the focus of this major study of Greek family and Greek mythology. Greek women married early, were excluded from public life, and had little legal protection; yet females figure prominently in Greek mythology and the maternal goddesses are often represented as powerful and aggressive. It is Slater's contention that women in Greek society exerted a strong matriarchal dominance, which simultaneously encouraged and stymied the exploits of the fabled Greek hero. Slater pursues the themes of narcissism and psychological ambivalence as he studies the myths of Zeus, Apollo, Orestes, and Dionysus; and particularly Heracles (literally, "the glory of Hera"), whose several responses to his persecutor}' mother, Hera, exemplify every mode of response to maternal threat. In a concluding section, Slater suggests cross-cultural and contemporary parallels to the Greek situation, notably in the life of the American middle class today. (Verlagstext) // INHALT : Preface --- PART ONE : ORIGINS AND CONSEQUENCES --- The Greek Mother-Son Relationship: Origins and Consequences --- Symbols, the Serpent, and the Oral-Narcissistic Dilemma --- PART TWO : MYTHICAL DEFENSES AGAINST THE MATERNAL THREAT --- Sexual Dominance: Zeus --- Masculine Antisepsis: Apollo --- Matricide: Orestes --- Self-Emasculation: Hephaestus --- Identification with the Aggressor: Dionysus I, --- The Ritual --- Identification with the Aggressor: Dionysus II, --- The Attack in the Womb --- Identification with the Aggressor: Dionysus III, --- The Attack on the Neonate --- Identification with the Aggressor: Dionysus IV, --- The Attack on the Mature God --- Maternal De-Sexualization: Perseus --- The Multiple Defenses of Heracles // (u.a.) ‎Slatkin Laura M.‎

‎THE POWER OF THETIS And Selected Essays‎

‎Center for Hellenic Studies. Fine with no dust jacket. 2011. Paperback. 0674021436 . Laura Slatkin's influential and widely admired book here published in a second edition together with six additional essays explores the superficially minor role of Thetis in the Iliad. Highly charged allusions reverberate through the narrative and establish a constellation of themes that link the poem to other traditions. Slatkin uncovers alternative traditions about the power of Thetis and shows how an awareness of those myths brings a far greater understanding of Thetis's place in the thematic structure of the Iliad. The six additional essays included in this volume--some of them classics some never before published--cover a broad range of topics in the study of the Greek Epic: the workings of genre in Hesiod and Homer; the poetics of exchange; and the nature of enmity and friendship. The volume also includes a study of the Hesiodic Catalog of Women and reflections on particular heroes such as Diomedes and Odysseus. ; Hellenic Studies 16; 238 pages . May have been a personalized copy. Apart from noted flaws the book is very nice and clean. Four longer stories and nine short nursery rhymes are illustrated with colour pictures taken from Victorian magic lantern slides produced by the London firm of W. Butcher & Son Primus from the collection of L. M. H. Smith. Introduction by Smith. A quite charming and unusual book more for adults than children. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall.

Hamlyn Publishing Group Ltd. hardcover‎

‎HOMER AND THE ARTISTS Text and Picture in Early Greek Art‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0521620228 . Very minor shelfwear. ; This is a study of the works of art from early Greece that have long been presented as "illustrations to Homer " but that are argued here to be nothing of the kind. Early Greek artists showed no preference for Homeric subjects and when their interests did coincide with Homer's treated his account as at best one of the possible variants. Close descriptive analysis of texts and pictures and of the artists' aims together with statistical evidence provide the basis for the argument. ; 0.43 x 8.29 x 5.91 Inches; 200 pages .
