THE EXPERIENCES OF TIRESIAS The Feminine and the Greek Man
Princeton University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1995. Hardcover. 0691029857 . Former owner's name to ffep. Pencil marginalia and underlining to a few pages. Else very minor shelfwear to book. Dustjacket has light shelfwear with 1 tiny chip to head of spine. ; In The Experiences of Tiresias its title referring to the shepherd struck blind after glimpsing Athena's naked body Nicole Loraux explores the ambivalence in how the Greek male defines himself in relationship to the feminine. In these essays Loraux disturbs the idea of virile men and feminine women a distinction found in official discourse and aimed at protecting the ideals of male identity from any taint of the feminine. Turning to epic and to Socrates however she insists on a logic of an inclusiveness between the genders which casts a shadow over their clear officially defined borders. "Nicole Loraux documents with delicate sensitivity to text and context the mobility of the contrast between 'man' and 'the feminine. '. Her readings of tragedy are particularly compelling. "--Mary Margaret McCabe The Times Literary Supplement "Loraux is a pioneer in the analysis of gender difference and sexuality in classical Greece. Strongly opposed to polarized interpretations of 'masculine' and 'feminine ' she illuminates the complex and often contradictory interrelationship of the sexes in real life and in the Greek/Athenian social 'imaginary. Icaro. Nel cuore di Dedalo. Ediz. illustrata
ill., ril.

Louden Bruce
THE ODYSSEY Structure Narration and Meaning
The Johns Hopkins University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1999. Hardcover. 080186058X . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 0.98 x 9.37 x 6.31 Inches; 208 pages; Bruce Louden's bold re-reading of the Odyssey -- the first attempt in years to map in detail the poem's overall structure -- offers new insights into the artistry of Odysseus' mythic voyage and enriches our understanding of Homer's masterful craftsmanship. Louden's groundbreaking work uncovers an extended narrative pattern repeated in full three times which reveals the poem's underlying skeletal structure. This organizational analysis helps to explain the existence of several characters or episodes sometimes dismissed as extraneous as late additions or even as corruptions to Homer's original intent. In addition Louden's discovery strengthens the suggestion that the Odyssey was the product of oral tradition. By repeating this sequence of successive motifs a single improvising bard could explore a variety of complex ideas within a poem as long as the Odyssey. Though centrally concerned with the form of Homer's rich and complex plot Louden's study is not exclusively or even primarily formalistic. His investigation involves the study of characters' names challenges faced by Odysseus the structure of the poem and roles assigned to the poem's female characters. Louden's comprehensive achievement gives the reader a fresh perspective on the role of divine hostility and the artistry of an epic survivor on his timeless journey home. . Lowenstam Steven
AS WITNESSED BY IMAGES The Trojan War Tradition in Greek and Etruscan Art
The Johns Hopkins University Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2008. Hardcover. 0801887755 . Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 248 pages; What informed and inspired the visual artists who depicted the Trojan War on vases on walls and in sculpture Scholars have debated this question for years. Were Greek painters simply depicting the stories of Achilles and Odysseus as recounted in Homer's epics Or did they work independently following their own traditions without regard to the Iliad the Odyssey and other poetry of their time Steven Lowenstam offers here an alternative theoretical framework arguing that Greek artists and poets interacted with each other freely always aware of what the others were producing. As Trojan War myth was the common inheritance of all Greek storytellers verbal and visual depictions of heroic myth were not created in isolation but were interdependent responses to a centuries-old tradition. As Witnessed by Images investigates visual depictions of Achillean and Odyssean myth from ca. 650-300 BCE and traces the many messages that the stories of Achilles and Odysseus inspired. Lowenstam identifies a variety of images and interpretations -- some regarded Achilles as a hero others believed him to be a cruel bully -- that reflect and directly respond to the ancient heroic tradition from which the Iliad and Odyssey evolved. .
