A tourist guide for over twenty years, Ahmet Faik Ozbilge wrote this book after studying and walking over every inch of Fener, Balat and Ayvansaray, three ancient neigborhoods of the Golden Horn. The book starts off with the Church of St. Savior in Chora, now Kariye Museum, and traces the ancient Byzantine walls passing through Balat and Fener all the way to Cibali. Though rather long, this is a circular route around which it is possible to walk in one day passing synagogues, churches, mosques, palaces, dungeons, tombs, dervish lodges, fountains and Turkish baths in neigborhoods where once inhabited by Jews, Greeks, Bulgars, Moldavians, Wallachians, emperors, sages, drunkards, dervishes and other colorful denizens of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires.

This book has been prepared due to the exhibition held in the Military Museum and Culture Site between May 6 and May 15, 1997 in cooperation with the Municipality of Sisli and the Painting and Sculpture Museums Association. One of 1000 copies. "... The old "La Societa Operaia" and the new "Galatasaraylilar Yurdu" [i.e. Dormitory of Galatasaray Lycee] in Beyoglu, Pera started to host three art exhibitions; the first two would be held in the spring of 1916 and 1917, and the last one, which hosted paintings about the war - what would later become known as the Sisli Studio - was held in late 1917 before being brought to Vienna. The Vienna exhibition hosted 20 artists; Zekai Pasha, who had exhibited only one work in the late 1917 exhibition, "Bir Konak Dahili" [i.e. Interior of a Mansion] did not take part in the Vienna show, while the Prince Abdülmecid Efendi, the honorary president of the Society, who had not attended the 1917 exhibition, sent four paintings to Vienna. The opening of the Vienna exhibition was conducted by the Archduke himself. The exhibition, as Celal Esad pointed out, was well received by both Austrian visitors and the press. A poster was designed and the exhibition was accompanied with a German catalogue, Ausstellung Türkischer Maler [i.e. Exhibition of Turkish Painters]. Turkish artists who attended Vienna Exhibition are: Prince Abdulmejid, Ömer Adil Bey, Ali Cemal Ben'im, Ali Sami Boyar, Cevat Bey, Feyhaman Duran, Harika (Sirel Lifij) Hanim, Halil Pasha, Hikmet Onat, Hüseyin Avni Lifij, Ismail Hakki Bey, Mehmed Ali Laga, Mahmud Bey, Namik Ismail, Rusen Zamir Hanim, Mehmed Ruhi Bey, Mehmed Sami Bey (Yetik), Sevket Dag, Diyarbakirli Tahsin, and Ibrahim Çalli; with their 142 pieces of paintings totally, in different techniques.

As they ask me about the old days, I feel as if one of the last survivors of an endangered societies. It makes me feel like a remnant of something that's past. Well, certainly this is not that old Island. But, I think we are the ones disappearing. Everytime we look at the past, we are searching for our memories, childhood and youth. And all the years vanished. Those who are really missed a lot and not found are ourselves in the past. Indeed, we don't exist. That dark skinned boy running in the Kopsidas' garden at Hristos Qarter, pursuing a butterfly amid the rosebuds, playing with tin soldiers doesn't exist anymore. And he won't come back. Today's Island that I still love so much and will be keeping is not the same with the Island of my memories. The Island is still there with all its beauties.

He was educated at Odessa and the military school at Munich. Having served as an officer of artillery in the Bavarian army, he returned to Greece, where he held several high educational and administrative appointments. He subsequently became ambassador to Washington, D.C. (1867), Paris (1868), and Berlin (1874-1886), and was one of the Greek plenipotentiaries at the Congress of Berlin in 1878. Alexis Gritchenko, (1883-1977) was part of the modern art scene and exhibited with avant-garde artists including Kazimir Malevich, Wassily Kandinsky, Vladimir Tatlin and many others. Gritchenko was also an art critic and published articles, books; delivered public lectures, and taught in an art school. He decided to escape the civil war which followed the Russian Revolution of 1917. Leaving Moscow, he arrived in Istanbul in November 1919. Although the two years Gritchenko spent in Istanbul coincided with the occupation of the city, the Ottoman capital provided the artist with a relatively safe refuge until he left in 1921. On his arrival, he was instantly attracted by the colors and dynamism of Istanbul. He recorded his impressions of the vibrant ports, markets, sacred spaces, and majestic monuments while wandering through the streets, notepad, pen and brush in hand. Looking at his vast corpus of Istanbul works, one can retrace the cultural and social imprint of those turbulent years through the eyes of a visitor. Now, 100 years after the visit of Gritchenko to Istanbul, a great part of the works the artist created in the city, a collection of watercolors, gouaches, sketches, and oil paintings have been compiled into the book Alexis Gritchenko - The Constantinople Years. More than 150 works have been included in the publication alongside articles by art historians Vita Susak and Aysenur Gu?ler, detailing the artist's life and technique, as well as the connections and friendships he formed during his stay in Istanbul, including those between him, Ibrahim Çalli, and Namik Ismail.
