[MAP of IRAQ - SHEET of SAMAWAH] Semave (First of 4 feuilles).
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original chromolithograph folded map. Oblong atlas folio. (49 x 65 cm). In Ottoman script. Repaired with a band in the contemporary period from its backside. Set including 4 sheets. Other sheets are Basrah, Bagdad, and Qut al-Amare. This is the first sheet including 'Samawah'. Rare. Scale is 1/500.000. Samawah city was settled by the Arab tribe of Banu Quda'a around the 3rd century AD. It is built on both sides of the Euphrates river; there are four bridges in the center of town for crossing between the two sides. The west bank of the city contains the commercial heart of the city and includes the old town and the Jewish quarter, Agd al Yahood. The west bank is the site of the covered market Suq Al Masgoof, which dates to the Ottoman period. The area surrounding the market is the old city with its Byzantine maze of crowded markets and streets. The eastern side of the city including 'Qushla' has a more modern feel and contains a number of estates of apartment blocks built during the 1970s and 1980s, As Samawah Stadium, which is home to the local Muthanna football team Samawa FC, as well as technical colleges and the polytechnic. There too is Al Qushla, the historic "Ottoman Barracks". The most famous attraction of Samawah in the ruins of the ancient Sumerian city of Uruk which dates to 4000 BC. This was the largest city in Sumer, extending over 2 km2. Uruk was not only the largest conurbation of the first urban civilization on earth, but it is also the place where the first written script was discovered, the oldest dating back to 3300 BC. The palm groves of Samawah: Samawah is built on both sides of the Euphrates and is surrounded by hundreds of palm groves that give it a tropical feel, especially in the southern and northern suburbs. These groves provide cool respite from the scorching heat of Mesopotamia and were the inspiration for the famous Iraqi folk song "The Palm of Samawah".

New Turkish Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In Turkish. 187 p., b/w plts. Katilimci mimarlik. [= Architecture for the poor.= Construire avec le peuple]. Translated by Serpil Özaloglu. 1000 copies were printed. Hassan Fathy's plan for building the village of New Gourna, near Luxor, Egypt, without the use of more modern and expensive materials such as steel and concrete. Using mud bricks, the native technique that Fathy learned in Nubia, and such traditional Egyptian architectural designs as enclosed courtyards and vaulted roofing, Fathy worked with the villagers to tailor his designs to their needs. He taught them how to work with the bricks, supervised the erection of the buildings, and encouraged the revival of such ancient crafts as claustra (lattice designs in the mudwork) to adorn the buildings.

Princes' Islands, buildings, architects.= Adalar, binalar, mimarlar.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 21 cm). In Turkish and English. 135, [1] p. Color and b/w ills. Since time immemorial, the Princes' Islands have had a special place among the other districts of Istanbul. During the Byzantium Era, there were tiny fishing villages along the shores. An indication of the Islands' significance during that period was the number of monasteries where exiles were sent, including emperors, commandants and senior religious leaders whose eyes were blinded with a brand when they lost their authority. In the Ottoman Era, the Islands were no longer used for these purposes and life continued in the fishing villages and monasteries. Today, the best known architectural examples from the past are monasteries and churches. Unfortunately, only a few traces of these buildings stil remain to this day. Although the establishment of the Naval Academy (Mekteb-i Fünûn-i Bahriye-i Sâhâne) on Heybeliada in 1828 brought what is considered the first examples of housing to the.

New Turkish Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish.

HELEN OF CONSTANTINOPLE.
L'Histoire de la Belle Hélaine de Constantinople
Caen: Chez P. Chalopin c.1790s. Duodecimo 164 x 99 mm. Two signatures sewn as issued. Lightly toned minor peripheral nicking and creasing from handling yet still in excellent condition. A very rare imprint of this tale sewn and unbound as issued. A cheap production for a popular readership - the woodcut title vignette is noticeably crude - it is not surprising that other copies have not survived; only the copy in the BNF is located by Worldcat. The story is a version of the 14th-century epic poem of the wanderings of Helen of Constantinople much condensed from the 15000 verses of the original into 47 pages of prose. The story is one of incest a surprisingly common theme in mediaeval literature: Helen daughter of Antoine Emperor of Constantinople flees her father's advances following the death of her mother instead escaping to marry Henry King of England. Henry's mother conspires to kill her but Helen escapes again losing her arm in the process. Antoine meanwhile repents is baptized and is forgiven by Helen who is reunited with her arm which is divinely re-attached and all the family. First published within a few decades of the introduction of printing to France the story was published in numerous versions and formats up to the 19th century. It was a favourite of the chapbook-style "Bibliothèque bleue" publishers and their street hawkers as was the case for this edition - although the book is undated P. Chalopin published various similar books towards the end of the 18th century. The story's ongoing popularity for almost five centuries reflects no doubt the salaciousness of the tale and the mystique of Constantinople all tempered with Christian moralizing. HENRY MATTHEWS.
Mosques of Istanbul including the mosques of Bursa and Edirne.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 160 p., color ills. Mosques of Istanbul including the mosques of Bursa and Edirne. The mosques of Istanbul represent the splendour of Islamic architecture. Their central domes, rising above the skyline of the city, convey both the ideals and ambitions of powerful Ottoman sultans and the brilliance of the architects who created them. This book places these buildings in their historical, religious and social context. It traces the evolution of the Ottoman mosque from smaal, fourteenth-century examples in the first Ottoman capitals, Bursa and Edirne to those built after the capture of Constantinople in 1453, and to the vast centralised structures commissioned by Suleyman the Magnificent in the sixteenth century. The daring experiments in space, light ans structure devised by Michelangelo's. Ottoman contemporary Mimar Sinan constitute a high point of the book, but the innovations of the Baroque and Neoclassical eras which followed are also fascinating.
