Apologies for the past: Two cases from Turkey.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 156 p. Apologies for the past: Two cases from Turkey. This book explores the issue of collective apology, and its potential to function as a symbolic form of restitution that publicly addresses and acknowledges the grievances faced by victimized groups. It explores two cases of collective apology in Turkey, "I Apologize" online signature campaign in 2008, and an apology speech carried out by a state official on the Dersim massacre in 2011. Both events raised significant public debate in Turkish society. Taking these two recent cases of collective apology and looking at them through the lens of existing scholarship on collective apology, this thesis explores the answers to a set of questions; on the format, wording and enactment of the apologies and their dealing with the issues of responsibility, and reconciliation.

Very Good Bulgarian Original blue cloth bdg. with embossing. Slightly stains on boards and toned on pages. Otherwise a very good copy. 12mo. (16,5 x 12 cm). In Bulgarian. 1230, [2] p. [HOLY BOOK IN BULGARIAN PRINTED IN TSARIGRAD (CONSTANTINOPLE)] Bibliia sirech sveshtenoto pisanie na Vetkhiia i Noviia zavet: Viarno i tochno prevedena ot pûrvoobraznoto. [.] In 1840 5,000 copies of the first complete translation of the New Testament were printed in Smyrna by the British and Foreign Bible Society. A second edition which was printed in Smyrna in 1850 was an almost exact reprint of the 1840 edition. A third edition followed in 1853 with 15,000 copies. The fourth edition was published in 1857 in Bucharest, and for the first time civil characters type was used. In 1859, two more editions were published. In 1866, a new "pocket" edition with text revised by Elias Riggs and Dr. Albert Long was printed in Constantinople. The New Testament was revised and reprinted a total of nine times. In the period from 1840 to 1860 the Eastern (Tarnovo) dialect was adopted as literary Bulgarian language and the Macedonian dialect, in which the New Testament had been translated, was widely rejected. By 1858 Neofit Rilski had finished large portion of the Old Testament. Riggs met with Neofit Rilski and discussed a possible revision of the Bulgarian New Testament to remove the Macedonian dialect elements. Neofit objected the revision, so Riggs took the translation and returned to Constantinople. In January 1859 Riggs invited the Bulgarian teacher Hristodul Kostovich to help him with the revision. In 1862 Long and Riggs visited the noted Bulgarian writer and poet Petko Rachov Slaveykov in Tryavna. Slaveykov agreed to help with the translation and began the work on the revising of Neofit's New Testament at once. Long joined the revision of the New Testament into the Eastern dialect in 1863 and later assisted with the translation of the Old Testament. In June 1871, after more than 12 years of revision and translation, 36,000 copies of the complete Bible translation in Bulgarian were published in Constantinople. The translation came to be known as the "Tsarigrad (Constantinople) Edition". Tsarigrad [or; Tsargrad, Tzargrad, Czargrad] Tsargrad is a Slavic name for the city or land of Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, and present-day Istanbul in Turkey. A physical copy of this edition is not located in OCLC. For digital register: OCLC 181122059.

HUGH POPE.
Sons of the conquerors: The rise of the Turkic world.
Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 413 p., b/w ills. Sons of the conquerors: The rise of the Turkic world. A detailed portrait of the Turkic people explores events since World War I that have rendered the nation a vital NATO ally and the site of a secular Islamic democracy, tracing centuries of citizen ancestry to offer insight into how Turkish culture has significantly impacted history. By the co-author of Turkey Unveiled. 20,000 first printing. With the end of the Soviet Union began independence for a half-dozen Turkic countries, where Istanbul-based reporter Pope has made forays for the past 15 years, traveling in both presidential airliners and faltering taxis. Pope does not organize his trips chronologically, but, rather, according to what he believes are the seven collective characteristics of Turkic peoples. One is the "military vocation" epitomized by Turkey itself, whose military is regarded as the guardian of secularism; a concomitant trait is predilection for the political strongman. None of the new Turkic states is a liberal democracy, and none less so than Turkmenistan, home to a shambolic personality cult devoted to its dictator. Pope's talks with officials are always revelatory of local and international politics, but readers will most value his perceptiveness about Turkic culture when he, speaking fluent Turkish, meets ordinary people. Some of these are Uygurs, the Turkic minority suppressed by communist China, and others are part of the Turkic diaspora in Europe and America. A sensitive presentation of how Turks view themselves and their future.

I. A. (IBRAHIM ALAETTIN GÖVSA), (1889-1949).
[PROPAGANDA MAP SPREADING THE WORD THAT TURKEY IS WINNING THE WAR] Map of West Anatolia and the Archipelago showing the fronts of Turkish War of Independence in 1921-22. Tercümân-i Hakîkât'in kârilerine hediyesi. [i.e. Extra suppl. to 'Tercümân-i Hakîkat' Newspaper].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) An extremely rare litho propaganda map published as an extra supplement to the Tercümân-i Hakîkat [i.e. The Translator of Truth] newspaper just before the proclamation of Republic in Turkey in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938), showing the front in West Anatolia during the War of Independence (or National Struggle) between 1919-1922 against Greek forces. The upside of the map between the note as title 'Gift to the readers of 'Tercümân-i Hakîkat', Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's portrait among decorated heroic lithographed drawings. In the lower right corner, can be seen legends of the map, scale, and mapmaker's signature. Tercümân-i Hakîkat was a daily newspaper published in Istanbul between 1878-1921 during the Ottoman Empire. Tercüman-i Hakîkat, the most important newspaper published during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, was founded by novelist Ahmed Midhat Efendi, (1844-1912). In the beginning, most of the articles were written by Ahmed Midhat Efendi. It was an encyclopedic newspaper with the aim of inculcating and educating reading habits among the Turks and it played an important role in the training of many famous Ottoman journalists. Its first issue was published on June 26, 1878. After Ahmed Midhat's death in 1913, the newspaper changed owners, and the last issue was published on February 11, 1921. Ibrahim Alaettin Gövsa, (1889-1949), was an Ottoman / Turkish journalist, educator, and intellectual who supported the War of Independence the most. This propaganda map published in Tercümân-i Hakîkat, during the war in 1920 or 1921, is a propaganda tool that calls on the literate people belonging to a certain class, especially those living in Istanbul, to support the war, and aims to spread the word that Turkey is winning the war. Original lithograph map. 50x35,5 cm. In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). Scale: 1: 250.000. Occasionally foxing and slight stains on paper, folded traces. Otherwise a very good copy.

Chora: Byzantium's shining piece of art.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. In publisher's special slip-case. Oblong 4to. (29 x 38 cm). In English. 240 p., color ills. Located in the Edirnekapi neighborhood of Istanbul and dating as far back as the 6th Century, the Church of Chora Monastery (Kariye Mosque) stands out as a noteworthy Byzantine work of art in the world of art history with its mosaics and frescoes. The monastery was renovated during the Palaeologos Dynasty, also known as the "Third Golden Age" of Byzantine Art, and has spectacular mosaics and frescoes which are at the heart of our work. Before studying these mosaics and frescoes in our book, we provided the vast history of the period in an effort to clarify the themes featured on the panels. Also included in our book is the life story of Theodore Metochites, a versatile administrator and the person behind the creation of the mosaics and frescoes of the monastery which represent the most beautiful examples of Byzantine art. There are mosaics in the exterior and interior narthexes of Chora depicting the lives of Jesus and Mary as well as religious stories, while its domes, arches and walls have both mosaics and frescoes concerning subjects that are interrelated and depicted mostly together and sometimes in different locations. For a holistic recounting of those related depictions that are placed independently from each other, repetitions were necessary at times. In addition to this world-renowned church which we tried to present to you within a broad time line, we also covered the other churches in Istanbul that belong to the Byzantine Period, in the last section of our book. We ended our journey with these churches and monasteries, which are also significant in Byzantine history.

The history and architecture of the Hagia Sophia.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. In special slip-case. 4to. In English. 300 p. Color and b/w ills. Having decorated the silhouette of Istanbul for nearly 1500 years, the Hagia Sophia has been regarded as the Eighth Wonder of the World by several scientific journals. It has become one of the most important stones in art history for the mosaics and decorations it houses. When the construction of the church, which was begun upon the order of Emperor Justinian, was completed, those who had seen it were stunned by its superior architectural features of the period and the quality of the materials used in its construction. Arriving on Christmas Day, December 27th, 537 riding a chariot pulled by four horses, Emperor Justinian inaugurated the impressive structure with the prayers of Patriarch Menas. It was to remain the heart of the Christian world as the most important church of the Eastern Roman Empire for the next 916 years. Adorned with the finest mosaics of Byzantine art, it did not take long before this structure became synonymous with Constantinople. As the pride of Christianity, the Hagia Sophia was to sustain major damage from as fires and earthquakes. However, ironically, it was the Latins who wreaked the most havoc upon the church during the 4th Crusade of 1204. Despite all the disasters that befell the city, the Hagia Sophia managed to remain intact, continuing to be the shining light of the envy of the world, The long Byzantine era concluded with the conquest of Constantinople by Sultan Mehmet Khan II in 1453, thus marking the start of the Islamic era at the Hagia Sophia. The highly reverent Ottomans carefully converted this huge house of worship into a mosque. Bearing the title 'Caliph of Islam', the sultans conducted their obligatory prayer services and religious holiday receptions here. One of the most important indications of the merit showered upon the structure during this period was the fact that some Ottoman sultans were buried here. Having served as one of the most important mosques of the Islamic world for 481 years, the Hagia Sophia's mosaics were plastered over in compliance with Islamic custom. Moreover, the Turkish works and architectural additions contributed an incomparable richness to the aura of the Hagia Sophia. A number of Byzantine era structures remain extant today thanks to the renovation studies conducted during the Ottoman era. In particular, the additions and repairs made by Mimar Sinan, as well as the periodic studies commissioned by some Ottoman sultans have contributed towards ensuring the structure maintained the same splendor when it was first built. Sultan Abdulmecit commissioned the Swiss architect, Gaspare Fossati to renovate the Hagia Sophia between 1847-1849, during which the mosaics were also repaired. The mosaics began to be cleaned and displayed in 1934 when the structure was converted into a museum. Having remained intact for practically 15 centuries, UNESCO has also placed this structure on the list of edifices that need to be preserved. We took it upon ourselves to acquaint readers of this book with the architecture, mosaics, legends and Turkish-era works of this world-famous structure. I wish to thank and offer my regards to all everyone who has contributed their time and labor towards the production of this book.

"In order to stimulate sales of their products in Levantine markets foreign nations are beginning to hold individual industrial exhibitions of strictly national character in Near East cities particularly in Athens and Constantinople -an innovation justifiable by the growing purchasing power of Levantine communities. Poland was one of the ffirst demonstrate the effectiveness of this method. Since its industrial exhibition at Constantinople in 1924 Polish exports to Turkey have been considerably stimulated particularly in textiles and in agricultural implements and machinery. Many of these products which before the war were exported almost wholly via Hamburg cannot be shipped direct to the south.". From the Vice Consul Royal in Constantinople report. With an approximately 600-year-long past relations between Turkey and Poland continued in the 1920s within the emerging conjuncture after WWI. Moreover the foundation of the republic in both countries emphasized the similarity in the choice of regime in their relations. Within this atmosphere while the parties were empowering their relations the Polish Industrial Exhibition acted as a significant platform by social cultural and especially economic means. The exhibition which was opened on September 12 1924 after the preparations of Istanbul Municipality and Chamber of Commerce accelerated the relations of these countries and Istanbul's touristic activity. Indeed various groups visited Istanbul and representatives of both countries met at several organizations. A special pictorial edition with the title The Memory of Istanbul Polish Exhibition Pictorial Magazine Polish Industry and Turkey Warsaw-Istanbul September 1924 was published mentioning the approaches of the Polish side. On the other hand daily newspapers such as Cumhuriyet Ikdam Son Telgraf Tevhid-i Efkr and Vatan closely followed the exhibition and published news about the event. Based on primarily periodicals and partially other sources this study analyzes Polish Industrial Exhibition and determines Turkey's public opinion on the event. In addition the approaches of the Turkish Press and public opinion is being reflected next to the analyses of the special addition Pictorial Magazine dated 1924.
