Wooden Istanbul: Examples from housing architecture.= Istanbuls Holzhauser: Beispiele seiner historischen Wohnarchitektur.= Ahsap Istanbul: Konut mimarisinden örnekler.
New English Paperback. Large 8vo. (22 x 20 cm). In English, German, and Turkish. 339 p., color and b/w ills. Wooden Istanbul: Examples from housing architecture.= Istanbuls Holzhauser: Beispiele seiner historischen Wohnarchitektur.= Ahsap Istanbul: Konut mimarisinden örnekler. ''Istanbul's real interior view,'' writes Tanpinar in describing the wooden houses of Istanbul ''was created by a colorful civil architecture ornate with oriels, bow windows and projections, eaves and awnings, velvety soft lines and decorations.'' To his observations on the perished wooden seaside palaces of the Bosphorus he adds, ''Perhaps the history of the Bosphorus fascinates us more than others, for we no longer find in place what we are looking for. .What intrigues us, in fact is none other than the void these buildings leave behind.'' Today, although it is rarely encountered in the landscape of Istanbul, wooden housing architecture continues to preserve its place in the city's image as it is enshrined in collective memory. While many have us may not have spent a portion of our lives in such houses, the memories of family members and friends and the impressions from the literature of a recent past sustain our connection to these houses. Whether we are aware or not, this heritage enthralls us with the mystique of a lost world while offering certain clues on the creation of an inescapably reconstructed Istanbul identity, which is shaped not only through architecture but also an entire way of living.

The lure of the East: British orientalist painting.= Dogu'nun cazibesi: Britanya oryantalist resmi. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 360 p., color ills. The lure of the East: British orientalist painting.= Dogu'nun cazibesi: Britanya oryantalist resmi. [Exhibition catalogue]. This exhibition focused on the paintings made by British artists of the 'Orient', primarily during the nineteenth century. In this context the term 'Orient', to Western Europeans, meant those parts of the eastern Mediterranean world which could be accessed relatively easily such as Egypt, Palestine and Turkey, particularly after the development of steamboat and rail travel in the 1830s. In these places, predominantly Muslim and at least nominally under the control of the Ottoman Empire, British artists, such as David Roberts, David Wilkie, William Holman Hunt, John Frederick Lewis and Frederic Leighton, sought to develop imagery which captured what they believed to be characteristic of the people, cities and landscapes of the region. In the 1970s the Palestinian-American academic Edward Said published his treatise on Orientalism, initiating a global debate over Western representations of the Middle East. For many, such representations now appeared to be a sequence of fictions, serving the West's desire for superiority and control over the East. The argument for and against Said's Orientalism has continued for thirty years. Its resonance for an exhibition such as this one, however, is as strong as ever given that, by the 1920s (the end of the period covered by this exhibition), Britain was in direct control of much of the newly abolished Ottoman Empire, including Egypt, Palestine and Iraq. As Said argued, these images cannot be viewed in isolation from their wider political and cultural context. Keeping the debates around Orientalism in mind, "The Lure of the East" focuses on the range of pictorial options open to British artists, within five major themes: portraits, genre, religious and domestic subjects and landscape. British painters came to the Middle East from a culture steeped in technical and compositional artistic traditions. Such traditions were not easily unlearned, despite the apparent difference of the people and places the artists encountered on their travels. Given this, British Orientalist painters found many challenges in attempting to represent the Middle East, but they also found inspiration and, more importantly, the freedom to rework, reinvent and even discard those conventions that defined picture-making in Britain.

"Istanbul has often been said to be a city that has lived but has never been written about. Now,after losing so many things of such great cultural value, it is essential that we should at last embarkon its documentation, employing all the various methods of culutural aechaeology. In other words,we should uncover meaningful fragments of its heritage by the skilful utilisation of such an approch Most of what has been written so far on the subject of besiktas has been the work of a single writer and has rarely succeeded in rising above the amateur level.Besiktas past and present differs from previous work in being the first book to be produced by a group of specialists.Certainly,an important role in its preparation has been performed by the encyclopedia of Istanbul Past and Present previously published by the History Foundation,But all items from this work incorporated in Besiktas Past and Present have been thoroughly revised and any necessary material added.".

Besibiryerde. Compiling the visual odyssey of our beloved borough of Üsküdar, spanning 500 years from the 1420s up until the 1950s, "The golden city" album aims at presenting the pertinent documents of the historical heritage that Üsküdar possesses. The paintings, etchings, photographs, postcards, and maps incorporated into the book all function to adequately and efficiently reflect and convety a semblance of the likeness of the past times pertaining to the "Eternal city" Üsküdar (Scutari) the our present day, and carry them forward to to posterity. Each page of this book-album ensures the remembrance of an exalted glory and an enduring magnificence of the bygone epochs, and, in a sense, successfully attempts to recreate the memory of a living metropolis. Each visual element and image featuring in the album attests to a diverse and rich accumulation, amassed over hundreds of years, as this impressive and exhilarating pictoral feast defines the magical and enchanted atmosphere of Üsküdar, standing out prominently as a "Dreamland" or the "City of fairy-tales and fantasies. The poetics and politics of place: Ottoman Istanbul and British orientalism.
New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. 285 p. Color and b/w ills. "This unique collection takes a fresh look at Orientalism by shifting its center from Europe to Ottoman Istanbul and thinking about art in terms of exchange, reciprocity, and comparative imperialisms. This new lens reveals the essential role of the Ottoman city and its patrons and artists in the dialogues that facilitated production, circulation, and consumption of British Orientalist cultures. In this volume, art works are conceptualized as traveling artifacts produced through localized interactions. World renowned scholars and curators analyze the diverse audiences for such art works and the range of differing contexts for their reception both in the 19th century and more recently. In this way, British art is put into a dynamic relationship with an historicized understanding of cultures of collecting and display during the formation of comparative modernities and also with the contemporary postcolonial creation of new national models of exhibition and education. Featuring stunning visuals, this book puts art history in the context of cultural, visual, and literary studies, challenging the orthodoxies of postcolonial theory with the materiality of multiple imperialisms and modernities to offer a new take on the collection, display, and consumption of Orientalist cultures.".

The period between the second half of the 19th century and the turn of the 20th century is marked by profound changes in Istanbul with respect to urban structure, historical texture and monuments. A careful eye readily notices the considerable transformations spread over a hundred, hundred and fifty years in Istanbul city walls, Galata Tower, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome area. These photographs are replete with valuable clues for today's researchers, restorers, architectures and urban planners. Nonetheless, there is something beyond the obvious in these images: Istanbul's remaining city walls, arches, and domes of a far away past continue to survive in another form of existence in these old photographs, which reflect an age closer to us in time, yet just as rapidly vanished. The discolored surfaces permeating an indescribable sense of the old add another layer, another epoch to the historical richness of the city. Comprised of a selection from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Old Istanbul Photographs Collection, Wall Arch Dome ventures us into a journey in the same milieu and in a different time dimension. Yet, on this occasion, we find ourselves in an Istanbul more ancient, more distant than the Republican or Ottoman days; it is a Byzantine Istanbul of monuments, ruins and almost imperceptible traces from thousands of years past.

An Ottoman Protocol Register. Containing ceremonies from 1736 to 1808: BEO Sadaret Defterleri 350 in the Prime Ministry Ottoman State Archives, Istanbul.
New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x17 cm). In English. [xLiv], 223 p., ills., in English; [+] 144 p. facsimile of the BEO 350 Protocol Register in Ottoman script. The BEO 350 protocol register edited here is part of the Sublime Porte Archives series of the Prime Ministry Ottoman State Archives in Istanbul. The register covers a number of ceremonies held on various occasions from 1736 to 1808 and primarily concerned with accession ceremonies, funerals and, most of all, the reception of envoys. This edition of the BEO 350 is accompanied by an introduction, a synoptic list of ceremonies, appendices, and indexes. The introduction examines various aspects of Ottoman ceremonies, particularly those of a diplomatic nature, and includes a section on the gifts and offerings exchanged by the Ottoman administration and foreign envoys. As briefly discussed in the introduction, ceremonies contribute, albeit modestly, to the validation of a regime's political legitimacy and to its smooth functioning. When trying to determine the relationship between ceremonial rites and political power, the lofty symbolism of ceremonies needs to be interpreted with great care. Thus, detailed descriptions such as those found in protocol registers are extremely valuable, indeed indispensable, for a solid interpretation.
