br. Il discorso di Hume sulla religione si sviluppa lungo diverse linee argomentative. In primo luogo la contestazione di tutte le pretese di verità delle religioni teistiche: viene argomentata l'inaccettabilità di qualunque prova empirica o razionale dell'esistenza di Dio. Non meno radicale e decisiva è la critica che Hume rivolge alla credenza nei miracoli basata sulla presunta affidabilità delle testimonianze su eventi miracolosi che attesterebbero l'autorevolezza dei fondatori delle grandi religioni rivelate. Infine, terzo argomento: come conciliare la pretesa bontà e onnipotenza dell'essere divino dei monoteismi con la presenza del male nell'universo? A 2 page preface and a short index to the subjects of the plates, and then 110 plates of careful drawings of not only old oak furniture, but also architectural woodwork, plasterwork, metalwork and glazing. Each plate identifies the subject of the drawing, for example:Old Oak Chest at Little Moreton Hall, or Pew framing in aisle west of nave at Astbury Church, Cheshire, and so forth. A good rebacked cloth copy with gilded titles, still bright, and nice bevelled green cloth boards, inside many plates are soiled, mostly in the margins, there are a few handstamps inside the front and back covers. The stamps are from "Schmeig & Kotzian", the famous furniture makers in New York in the first half of the 20th century, so this copy probably came from their studio. Large folio, 15" high X 11" wide. Large heavy book, foreign shipping will be extra. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.

Ma se vogliamo trovare una testimonianza autentica di tale filosofia non dobbiamo rivolgerci ai filosofi e ai letterati di professione, i quali per lo più ne posseggono una conoscenza solo di seconda mano, bensì a quegli "individui eccezionali" che hanno "deciso di adempiere a certe condizioni, rendendosi pieni di amore, puri di cuore e poveri di spirito": da Eckhart ai mistici cristiani, da Lao Tse ai mistici buddhisti e induisti. Come in una catena di specchi, vita, arte e letteratura si incalzano in un susseguirsi di intersezioni che si legittimano e chiarificano reciprocamente; le immagini, come parole dipinte, evocano suggestioni e riflessioni che la scrittura da sola sembra inabile a produrre, così come le parole sviluppano dall'eccitamento visivo indizi e ispirazioni che concorrono verso un unico destino. Gli articoli qui raccolti coprono un periodo di mutamenti cruciali nell'opera e nella vita dello scrittore, compreso il raggiungimento della celebrità, dopo l'inaspettato successo di "À rebours", che gli permette indubbiamente una maggiore libertà interpretativa in fatto di critica d'arte. Huysmans, in questi anni (il libro è del 1889), sta ormai per abbandonare l'impressionismo; è nel pieno dell'estetica simbolista-decadente e si accosta alla cultura satanista, in fondo alla quale si intravede, lontano ma inevitabile, il faticoso approdo alla fede. Di qui deriva l'eclettismo nella scelta degli artisti trattati, che vede la compresenza di Degas e Moreau, Whistler e Chéret, Cézanne e Rops.
