Questa è Milano all'inizio del XX secolo: una città che, pur con le sue contraddizioni, si sta orgogliosamente trasformando in una vera metropoli e che, proprio con il suggello dell'Esposizione Internazionale del 1906, può confermarsi la capitale morale d'Italia e ottenere anche il titolo di capitale economica. Grazie all'Esposizione del Sempione, infatti, Milano coglie l'occasione irrinunciabile per mettere in mostra il suo nuovo volto e far sentire la sua voce, ormai pronta a confrontarsi senza timore con il resto del mondo sul terreno del progresso e dell'innovazione. A garantire il successo dell'evento internazionale sarebbe stato quello spirito di collaborazione e condivisione che aveva impregnato la società lombarda sin dalle sue origini, al di là di naturali contrapposizioni sociali, politiche, ideologiche. Uno spirito capace di indirizzare Milano verso un unico, e nobile, fine: la modernità.

Miss Porter studied privately with Yale Professors. and her brother Noah later became President of Yale. She was an opponent of women's suffrage. She notes in this letter that affairs at the school will keep her far too busy to make the journey. Sarah Porter 1813-1900 founded her school in Farmington in 1843 setting it up as an institution at which girls could receive a well-rounded academic education. She writes in part: "My dear Mary I thank you heartily that you have desired me as one of your wedding guests and I should be very happy in being with you at this so happy moment of your life. I could not easily under any circumstances easily leave school for so long a time as a journey to Newton would require - but now Mr. Brandt's wretched health renders him unable to teach and his classes fall daily into my care so that my place is daily here. L'antologia è dedicata al tema del rapporto tra femminismo e filosofia nell'età contemporanea, presentando pensatrici che, in modi diversi, si riconoscono come femministe e/o postfemministe e che hanno dato vita a opere che sono diventate ormai dei "classici". Un problema fondamentale fa da filo conduttore: la questione del "soggetto" e l'esplorazione della soggettività femminile e femminista. Il carattere "situato" dell'antologia, articolata in quattro sezioni, si rivela nella scelta di iniziare dalla presentazione del pensiero della differenza francese e italiano, da Luce Irigaray a Luisa Muraro e Adriana Cavarero, per poi attuare un dislocamento verso altri modi di esplorare la differenza sessuale e la soggettività femminista, come quello delle pensatrici cosiddette "postmoderne": da Bell Hooks a Gloria Anzaldúa, da Rosi Braidotti a Teresa de Lauretis e Judith Butler. L'intento è mostrare una pluralità di voci non sempre tra loro consonanti. Nella terza e quarta sezione i testi selezionati propongono una riflessione più specificamente politica su altre questioni, quali il rapporto tra scienza e femminismo o donne e biotecnologie, come nei testi di Donna Haraway e Françoise Collin, e il tema della giustizia e della distribuzione dei diritti nell'era del capitalismo transnazionale, come in quelli di Nancy Fraser, Seyla Benhabib, Rada Ivekovic' e Gayatri Spivak.

Non è un libro di storia dell'arte nè di critica ma solamente un mezzo per donare una chiave di lettura ad opere che sembrano incomprensibili a molti visitatori di un'esposizione d'arte contemporanea cercando di fornire una spiegazione che possa essere letta e compresa da tutti. L'autore ha inserito nel testo alcuni tra i pareri dei critici più affermati come Luca Beatrice, Francesco Bonami, Achille Bonito Oliva, Jean Clair, Philippe Daverio, Gillo Dorfles, Massimiliano Gioni, Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, Vittorio Sgarbi, Angela Vettese, da artisti e intenditori d.arte fino ai pareri del pubblico. Per capire meglio come siamo arrivati alle manifestazioni odierne completa il volume una sintesi degli ultimi movimenti artistici che si sono succeduti fino ai giorni nostri. "Questo scritto nasce dal fatto che ho sentito spesso intorno a me frasi sul tipo: ... le chiamano opere d'arte, non riesco a capire perché valgano milioni quando saprei fare anche io, magari anche meglio, le stesse cose...". È costituito da un'ampia introduzione dedicata alle suddette premesse (con numerose citazioni dagli scritti di Wagner), seguita da un 'racconto' dettagliato delle vicende - innanzi tutto - dei quattro drammi musicali, in altrettanti capitoli. La trattazione si avvale degli apporti ermeneutici più significativi, da quelli storici di Nietzsche, George Bernard Shaw, Thomas Mann, T. W. Adorno a quelli più recenti. Corredata degli esempi musicali relativi a tutti i Leitmotive e di tavole che offrono una visione d'insieme della struttura tematica, offre la possibilità di addentrarsi nell'universo sonoro e drammaturgico di una delle più grandi creazioni di tutti i tempi per osservarne i dettagli compositivi e districarne la complessità dei significati. Il taglio non è tuttavia analiticamente specialistico: l'origine stessa del volume, didattica e divulgativa, si riflette nell'adozione di un registro intermedio, che non trascura le annotazioni utili allo studioso più competente, ma si presenta al contempo accessibile al lettore colto e appassionato.

L'impero asburgico fu la potenza europea che più di tutte si trovò a fronteggiare nemici pericolosi durante la propria esistenza, contando su ben pochi dei vantaggi che solitamente si trovano alla base degli imperi vittoriosi. I suoi eserciti non erano rinomati per le capacità offensive, le sue finanze erano spesso ridotte e la sua popolazione era frammentata in oltre dodici etnie. Eppure l'Austria sopravvisse agli ottomani, ai russi, a Federico il Grande e a Napoleone. Ad essere descritta e analizzata in queste pagine è proprio la grande strategia dell'impero asburgico, dalla Guerra di successione spagnola del primo Settecento fino alla sconfitta per mano prussiana nel 1866. Ne emerge un percorso in cui rispetto alla potenza militare prevale la capacità di manipolare il fattore temporale nelle competizioni geopolitiche, attraverso lo sviluppo di un "grande gioco" che condusse nel lungo termine a una benevola egemonia nelle turbolente terre dell'Europa centrale.

Modern red half morocco gilt top edges gilt. Provenance: with Wheldon and Wesley 1977 $1647. "A VERY ATTRACTIVE GROUP OF RATHER SMALL BIRDS" Mivart First edition and an attractive copy. The maps show the distribution of the family across Australia New Guinea and the South Pacific Islands and provide a detail of the islands between Celebes and New Guinea. The plates are described by Sitwell as Keuleman's 'best work' and represent 16 species for the first time. In his introduction the author explains his interest in the family Loriidae 'a very attractive group of rather small birds' varying in dimension 'from the size of a Turtle-Dove to about that of a Sparrow' and consisting 'of 75 more or less distinct species. The family is remarkable for its brilliancy and gay coloration' and its friendliness: 'Some of them . will spontaneously approach human dwellings and most of them make excellent pets.' Keulemans began his career as a taxidermist providing stuffed birds to the State Museum of Natural History at Leiden. The director of that museum encouraged Keulemans to pursue his love of natural history where he obtained a scientific appointment after an expedition to West Africa in 1865 and 1866. His accomplishments in illustration came to the notice of Richard Bowdler Sharpe later a director of the British Museum who encouraged him to move to England. Keulemans quickly achieved wide recognition and established himself as the most popular bird artist of the late Victorian period. He regularly provided illustrations for "The Ibis" and "The Proceedings of the Zoological Society". He illustrated many important bird books including Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand" 1873 Shelley's "Monograph of the Sun-Birds" 1876-1880 William Vincent Legge's "Birds of Ceylon" 1880 Daniel Giraud Elliot's "Monograph of the Hornbills" 1887-1892 Richard Bowdler Sharpe's "Monograph on Kingfishers" 1868-1871 Henry Seebohm's "Monograph on Thrushes" 1902 and Osbert Salvin's "Biologia Centrali-Americana" 1879-1904. br. Questo libro si propone di rispondere alla domanda concernente l'esistenza, in Italia, di una letteratura di stampo surrealista. Seppure il surrealismo in Italia non abbia mai preso una forma definita come in Francia, alcune importanti influenze e una certa vicinanza e aderenza alla poetica surrealista sono evidenti negli autori trattati, Alberto Savinio, Antonio Delfini e Tommaso Landolfi, ma anche nell'esperienza artistica e letteraria della scuola metafisica, che gioca un ruolo precursore nella definizione dei paradigmi teorici del surrealismo sia in Francia che in Italia. Ognuno degli autori trattati è stato messo in dialogo con la letteratura surrealista francese, in particolare in relazione ai lavori teorici di André Breton: la natura spezzettata che la relazione tra la letteratura italiana e il surrealismo francese ha assunto è ciò che ha portato a prediligere un'indagine che trovasse i suoi punti di origine negli scricchiolii che risuonano tra le pagine, prediligendo le «spie» all'interno del testo che consentono di acquisire una leggibilità totale dell'opera proprio partendo da piccoli indizi rivelatori.
