‎San Francisco: Bergez-Frank's Old Poodle Dog Restaurant1911. 2 pp. on card stock. 4.75 x 3.5 inches.Embossed cover with 7 course menu. James Henry Barry 1855-1927 was born on February 15 1855 another source cites 1856 in New York City to Mary Ann Harris Barry and William Barry. In 1859 his parents came to California via the Isthmus of Panama but his mother died in 1862 leaving five young children. His father then married his sister-in-law Mrs. Fischer and together they had two more children before his death in 1870. The second Mrs. Barry raised the children and lived until 1910. James H. Barry attended San Francisco grammer school until obliged to join the work force at age 12 although he attended night school and studied privately. He worked in the composing room of a general book and job printing office. After 10 years he became a master printer and embarked on his own business without any capital. In September 1881 James H. Barry of Barry & Baird Printers ran for "Regular Democratic Nominee" for supervisor of the Fourth Ward. In 1884 Barry founded the Star a weekly journal published by him until its suspension in 1921. The paper was conceived for and consecrated to the fight against corruption in government extremely rampant at the time of its inauguration especially in the judiciary. Every effort was made to crush Barry's paper and his life was threatened more than once. Barry had some libel suits to defend in unfriendly courts which brought financial problems but he always won successfully backing up his accusations and swaying public opinion so that no judge or jury would convict him. Barry was active in civic and social life in San Francisco. His "Good Cheer Dinners" which took place just before New Year's Eve were festive affairs with speeches and humorous songs. The guest lists show the presence of prominent San Franciscans in addition to friends and family. Barry was often a speaker for organizations such as the Sailor's Union of the Pacific. He was in close touch with Mayor Rolph and was a member of the Commonwealth Club and other social and political organizations. Several hundred members of the order were present to greet him and a most enjoyable time was had by all. A special train was run from Ttburon to accommodate the members of the order from the south and another from Healdsburg for those from the north. Forerunner of UCSF: 1868-1898 The Origins of the University of California and Affiliated Colleges' San Francisco's First Medical Schools In 1858 California surgeon Elias Samuel Cooper organized the Medical Department of the University of the Pacific with a board of trustees consisting of ten clergymen and three physicians. The first session opened in May 1859 with a class of ten attending lectures in materia medica chemistry physiology anatomy and medical jurisprudence. Dr. Cooper's death in 1862 brought confusion to the new school and in 1864 the Pacific Medical faculty "suspended" activities and joined Dr. Hugh Toland in his efforts to found a viable medical school in San Francisco. Toland's first class consisted of eight students mostly drawn from the Cooper Medical College. The faculty of this lapsed medical college were asked to serve on the Toland roster and Drs. Levi Cooper Lane Henry Gibbons Sr. and John F. Morse joined the faculty with some ambivalence. Significantly R. Beverly Cole the Dean and professor of obstetrics and diseases of women and children at Cooper was not asked by Toland to join his new faculty. Ab 1913 Fortsetzung des Studiums in Wien an der Graphischen Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt bei Ludwig Michalek (1859-1942), durch dessen und Oskar Laskes (1841-1911) Vorbild folgte seine Hinwendung zur Graphik. 1917 Umzug nach München, dort ein Semester an der Kunstgewerbeschule. Erste Holzschnitte ab 1917 und erste Ausstellungsbeteiligung 1918 im Wiener Künstlerhaus. 1918-1921 Lehrtätigkeit an der Schule für angewandte Kunst in München in der Graphikklasse. 1922 Hollandreise, 1924 England, Dalmatien, Italien und Schweden, wo sie ihren Ehemann Dr. Eugen Milch kennenlernte. 1926-1940 Dozentin an der Universität Wien. Mitglied des Künstlerhauses Wien seit 1935. Zahlreiche Reisen, u.a. 1929 in den Fernen Osten, 1931 nach Paris und 1932 nach Prag. 1940-1950 Aufenthalt in China (Hongkong, Shanghai, Peking) sowie Japan (Tokyo). Von Japan aus nach Thailand, Kambodscha, Mexico und in die USA. 1957 Rückkehr nach Japan, wo sie bereits große Bekanntheit erlangt hatte. Schuf überwiegend figürliche Darstellungen, Landschaften und Stadtansichten. Die Künstlerin ist in mehreren prominenten Museums-Sammlungen vertreten.‎
