Illustrated in color throughout with 20 color photographs of art nouveau window designs executed in cloisonne (enamel) by Francisco Vidal, a master craftsman of this difficult and demanding technique. Also 22 black & white photographs of other decorative arts objects using this technique of cloisonne. This is a very good softcover copy with almost no wear. Completely clean inside and out. This is a sale catalog for an auction held at Sotheby's in Sussex, England on September 26, 1989. Sale code "HERCULES". The full title of the catalog is 'A collection of Venetian Garden Sculpture, including works attributed to Giovanni and Antonio Bonazza, Giovanni Marchiori and Orazio Marinali'. Brief introduction by Professor Giovanni Mariacher, who catalogued this collection and made the attributions. The Bonazza brothers were active in Padua from ca. 1698 to 1763. Giovanni Marchiori (1696- 1778) and Orazio Marinali (1643 - 1720) created many such sculptures for gardens such as the one at Villa Revedin Bolasco at Castelfranco. Similar sculptures can also be seen at the Villa Medici summer palace at Castello. 15 lots in the sale. 13 lots are heroic figurative sculptures, i.e. 'Diana', Figure of Zephyr', 'Hercules', 'Adonis', etc. The other 2 lots were pairs of medieval recumbent lions. Also a note tipped in to the front endpaper, citing some London auction information from the 1960's and a very faint pencil notation by someone noting that they bought the book in Wimbledon at Lloyd's Bookshop in 1967. The cover design is signed, also the colophon lists Neil Fujita as the designer of the catalog. Sadamitsu "S. Neil" Fujita (1921- 2010) was an American graphic designer known for his innovative book cover and record album designs. Afficionados will know his works, for example the album covers he designed for Dave Brubeck, like the Time Out album (with the tune Take Five). A number of his book dust jacket designs were memorable, for example the one for Truman Capote's 'In Cold Blood', and perhaps his best, the one for Mario Puzo's 'The Godfather'. 11" high X 10" wide. This was the third sale in their 'Highlights of Modern Design' series. Auktion # 62. Text in German. This sale was almost all German modern design. From German art nouveau through functionalism and the Bauhaus, the 'Good Design' period of the 1940's, to the Post-War designs of Braun and Dieter Rams, and Wilhelm Wagenfeld, the plastic furniture of the 1950's and 60's, and finally the post-modern period. 424 lots in the sale. This is a very good softcover copy in the original publisher's cream colored stiff paper covers, with a color illustration by Mariette Lydis tipped on, and with the clear plastic covers and comb binding intact. Very clean inside, light spotting outside. One photo has some offsetting to the white page opposite, some slight loss of color to the photo.Text in French. This is a program, published by the French magazine, Le Jour. It was issued on the occasion of a ball at the Opera on February 6, 1934. Printed by Draeger Freres, with color drawings by Mariette Lydis, Marie Laurencin, Vertes, Alexieff and Bret Koch among others. Article by Colette on Mariette Lydis. Photographs of movie stars and actresses throughout are printed with a special process, almost like silver or metal sheets. The process is called 'papier metallise'. Stars include Marlene Dietrich, Jean Harlow, Marcelle Chantal, Dolly Davis, among others. One sheet has a textile swatch printed with a light brown woodcut by Guinhald. Advertisements throughout from Paris couture houses, and fashion accessories shops. 10" high X 9" wide. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.
