Southern Terry screenwriter; Christopher Isherwood screenwriter; Tony Richardson director; John Gielgud starring
Terry Southern and John Gielgud on the set of "The Loved One" Original photograph
London and Los Angeles: MGM / Filmways 1965. Vintage still photograph of noted screenwriter Terry Southern with British actor John Gielgud on the set of Tony Richardson's seminal 1965 black comedy "The Loved One." On the verso is a printed ditto-style mimeo description of the shot and a blurb for the film. "The Loved One" has always been overshadowed by Terry Southern's screenplay from the year before it "Dr. Strangelove" but remains an important companion piece to that film. Whereas "Strangelove" was a meditation on war from an American perspective "The Loved One" is more a meditation on death and Hollywood from the British point of view. Photographs of Southern at work particularly on films are rare in our experience. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine with slight bleed of the mimeo printing to the image as is typical. MGM / Filmways unknown

Southern Terry screenwriter; Christopher Isherwood screenwriter; Tony Richardson director; Evelyn Waugh novel
The Loved One Original screenplay for the 1965 film crew member copy with shooting schedule
Beverly Hills CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer MGM 1964. Draft script for the 1965 film based on the 1948 novel by Evelyn Waugh legendarily co-written by Terry Southern and Christopher Isherwood. Deluxe working script belonging to uncredited crew member William Todd Mason with his name and phone number in holograph ink on the title page and some brief penciled annotations on three pages. Laid in is a corner stitched three page Staff and Crew list with two name additions in holograph red ink on the second page. Included is a vintage studio still photograph from the film. An early draft issued nearly two years prior to the film's October 1965 release with substantial differences from the finished film. The sister film to "Dr. Strangelove" and in the eyes of many just as much a masterpiece of exquisitely wrought black humor. Made in the US but in a dense British-American style. Ostensibly a satire on the funeral business in which a young British poet winds up in a Hollywood cemetery as part of an inheritance arrangement-but in reality a satire of Hollywood itself as well as the Western malaise of the mid 1960s. Script: Self wrappers presumably as this draft was issued. Title page present rubber stamped copy No. 70 dated July 21 1964 with credits for screenwriters Southern and Isherwood. 158 leaves mimeograph duplication with blue revision pages throughout dated 7-22-64. Pages Fine wrapper Fine bound with two gold brads. Staff and Crew listing: two leaves slightly worn with annotations on the second page. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM] unknown

Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures 1944. Two volumes each foliated in reel/page format as: 11097101110108 leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript printed on rectos only. Second item stapled at left margin first formerly stapled. Some corner creases "Master File Copy" and production number stamps on title leaf of first item pencil annotations name and ink file number on title leaf of second. Very good. Two late production states of the script for the 1945 film based on a story idea by Jack Wagner cowritten with John Steinbeck and adapted as a screenplay by Frank Butler. The release dialogue script records a print totaling 51 more feet than the censorship script. Irving Pichel directed and Dorothy Lamour J. Carrol Naish and Arturo de Cordova led the cast. Obviously little apart from Steinbeck's treatment for the film the Valentine collection included a carbon typescript may be easily identified as purely Steinbeck's work; however nothing relating to the script saw lifetime publication so even continuity scripts such as these take on some significance for Steinbeck scholars.
