‎Johnson, Lyndon B‎

‎NO RETREAT FROM TOMORROW: President Lyndon B. Johnson's 1967 Messages to the 90th Congress Signed Presentation Copy‎

‎
Washington D. C.: Government Printing Office 1967. 245 pages. Personally signed by President Johnson on a bookplate that includes the presentation written in calligraphy probably by Sanford Fox Chief of the White House Social Entertainments Office: "To Carl Hayden with my best wishes Christmas 1967." U. S. Senator Carl Hayden was at the time the longest serving 1912-1969 member of the United States Congress. Often called "the Silent Senator" because of his tendency to avoid speechmaking in favor of working behind the scenes Hayden was especially effective in promoting the federal highway systen and federal programs for mining irrigation and reclamation in the American west especially in his home state of Arizona. As President Pro Tempore of the Senate Hayden twice became second in the line of succession to the Presidency--first upon the death of Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn then after the assassination of President Kennedy. It is well-known that Johnson and Hayden both leaders in the U. S. Senate frequently worked closely together to get legislation passed. Less well known is that their personal relationship also was close. In a 1990 interview Roy Elson longtime member of Hayden's staff described the relationship: "there was a great deal of respect for each other and a real warmth." When Hayden retired from the Senate LBJ was a featured speaker in the retirement ceremony. The book is clean and tight in a clean and bright dust jacket that has some minor rubbing and several short closed edge-tears. SIGNED. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good-. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book.
Government Printing Office hardcover‎

‎George Harvey "A Passionate Patriot"‎

‎Boston: Houghton Mifflin 1929. Book. Near Fine. Cloth. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. First Edition. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on front endpage a full-page inscription: "My Very Dear Will Hays: There is no man in the world whom I'd have rather have read this little book of mine than yourself and none whose judgment of it I should more highly prize; because there is none who loved George Harvey better or knew him more truly than did you. If in reading these pages you should feel even a touch of the thrill that was mine in writing them I should be greatly gratified in the knowledge that there has been established a three-fold chain of memory binding us together in our mutual love for him binding us anew to him and binding us all three to that unforgettable past. 'When every morning brought a noble chance and every chance brought out a noble Knight'. Always faithfully yours Willis Fletcher Johnson March 1931". Willis Fletcher Johnson 1857 - March 29 1931 was an author lecturer and for twenty years foreign and diplomatic editorial writer for The New York Tribune. Will Hays managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America MPPDA which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. George Harvey purchased the North American Review in 1899. In 1901 he also purchased Harper's Weekly which he edited until 1913. He was president of Harper and Company until 1915. Following the election of Warren G. Harding on March 4 1921 he became the United States ambassador to Great Britain from 1921 until 1923. Book is Near Fine light soiling to cloth and light shelfwear. Most pages are uncut. Johnson died at the end of the month that he inscribed this copy. Great historical Asociation Copy. Houghton Mifflin Hardcover‎

‎History Of The Johnstown Flood Including all the Fearful Record; the Breaking of the South Fork Dam; the Sweeping out of the Conemaugh Valley.‎

‎Boston MA / Philadelphia PA: Edgewood Publishing Co. Good. 1889. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This copy is in Good only condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book covers have noticeable edge wear rubbing spots of paint on the spine fraying and more. The rear cover of the book has a patch of fading / discoloration but is not mold. The inner hinges to both front and rear have cracking and have been repaired by a previous owner. The front pastedown page has a perpendicular crack to the paper and it appears the cover has been abused a bit. The endpapers have ground-in dirt and toning. The text pages are generally clean though there are large spots of foxing throughout and the pages are somewhat fragile. This is a solid reading copy but isn't very pretty. "The Johnstown Flood locally the Great Flood of 1889 occurred on Friday May 31 1889 after the catastrophic failure of the South Fork Dam located on the south fork of the Little Conemaugh River 14 miles 23 km upstream of the town of Johnstown Pennsylvania. The dam ruptured after several days of extremely heavy rainfall releasing 14.55 million cubic meters of water. With a volumetric flow rate that temporarily equaled the average flow rate of the Mississippi River the flood killed 2209 people and accounted for $17 million of damage about $490 million in 2020 dollars.
