‎2 volumes: cxvii327 pages with frontispiece 8 maps 18 illustrations; vii328-916 pages with frontispiece 4 maps 26 illustrations appendices bibliography and index. Octavo 8 3/4" x 6" bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial representation of the ship Victoria embossed on front cover with cover edges blind ruled in original jackets. Edited by P E H Hair Adam Jones and Robin Law. Works issued by the Hakluyt Society second series volume 175 and 176. First edition.

Jean Barbot who served as a commercial agent on French slave-trading voyages to West Africa in 1678-9 and 1681-2 in 1683 began an account of the Guinea coast based partly on his voyage journals only one of which is extant and partly on previous printed sources. The work was interrupted by his flight to England as a Huguenot refugee in 1685 and not finished until 1688. When Barbot found that his lengthy French account could not be published he rewrote it in English enlarging it even further and then continually revising it up to his death in 1712. The manuscript was eventually published in 1732. Barbot's book had considerable influence on later European attitudes to Black Africa and the Atlantic slave trade and in modern writings on both subjects is frequently cited as evidence.

Condition:

Back head corners bumped of volume 1 else a fine set in like jackets. ‎Haramosh, der letzte blaue Berg. Aus d. Engl. übertr. von Georg Steinbichler u. Hans-Joachim von Zündt.‎

‎Pforzheim : Carta-Verlag, 1981. 194 S. : Ill. ; 21 cm; kart.‎

‎Searching for Franklin the Land Arctic Searching Expedition 1855‎

‎xv292 pages with frontispiece illustrations maps bibliography and index. Small quarto 10" x 7" bound in original publisher's dark blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial representation of the ship Victoria blind stamped in gilt on cover in original jacket. Edited by William Barr. Works issued by the Hakluyt Society Third Series Number 1. First edition.

In the Autumn of 1854 Dr John Rae of the Hudson's Bay Company astonished the world with the first news of the fate of the Franklin expedition missing in the Arctic since 1845 on the basis of stories rather vague as to time and place which he had hear from Inuit in the vicinity of Pelly Bay. The response of the Admiralty was to ask the Hudson's Bay Company to mount an overland expedition to attempt to confirm the Inuit reports. For this task Sir George Simpson the Company's Governor in North America selected James Anderson and James Stewart veteran employees of the Company and directed them to descend the Back River by canoe to the area which the Inuit reports seemed to identify as the site of the demise of the Franklin expedition. Having assembled the necessary men supplies and equipment in an amazingly short time Anderson and Stewart left their base at Fort Resolution on Great Slave Lake on 24 June 1855. They reached the sea at the mount of the Back River on 30 July and there encountered a group of Inuit who possessed a variety of articles which could only have come from Franklin's ships. Solid sea ice halted their search of the coast at Point Ogle and they were forced to start back south on 9 August. They were back at Fort Resolution by 16 September having completed an impressive trip in staggeringly short time. History has tended to judge Anderson and Stewart rather harshly despite the speed and efficiency of their journey. In fact their real contribution was to pinpoint the site of the tragedy on King William Island which the Inuit stories had identified only very vaguely. Their efforts allowed Captain Leopold McClintock to proceed directly to the correct area in 1859 and solve most aspects of the puzzle of what happened to the Franklin expedition.

Condition:

A fine copy in like jacket. ‎Voyages in Search of the North-West Passage 1741-1747: Volumes I & II: The Voyage of Christopher Middleton 1741-1742; The Voyage of William Moor and Francis Smith 1746-1747.‎

‎2 Volumes: Volume 1 subtitled: The Voyage of Christopher Middleton 1741-1742 xii333 with 8 maps 3 illustrations including frontispiece bibliography and index; Volume 2 subtitled: The Voyage of William Moor and Francis Smith 1746 1747 xv393 pages with frontispiece 13 maps 6 illustrations bibliography and index. Octavo 8 3/4" x 5 1/2" issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship to front cover. Translated by Anthony Mango. Second Series volumes 177 and 181. First edition.

The eighteenth century saw a resurgence of hope that a Northwest Passage - that elusive target of European seamen over the centuries - might yet be found. Prompted by the Irish MP Arthur Dobbs the Admiralty sent the Furnace and Discovery to Hudson Bay in 1741 in search of navigable passage to the Pacific. The expedition was commanded by Christopher Middleton until his resignation in March 1741 a sea-captain in the service of the Hudson Bay Company. With his actions closely scrutinized by his former employers and colleagues concerned about possible interference with the fur trade Middleton wintered at the Company fort at Churchill. From there in the summer of 1742 he sailed farther north along the west coast of Hudson Bay than any previous European explorer charting Wager Bay Repulse Bay and Frozen Strait; but he failed to find a passage. After his return to England he found himself accused of negligence and corruption. Dobbs attacked both him and the Hudson's Bay Company in a campaign which ruined Middleton's professional reputation and opened the way for further expedition to the Bay. The second volume deals with the privately-financed expedition sent four years later on the same quest commanded by William Moor and Francis Smith. Once more Arthur Dobbs was the prime mover this time with the help of an association of merchants the North West Committee and once more he was to be disappointed by the outcome. Quarrelsome captains tensions during the wintering at York Factory confused explorations and rival accounts made a mockery of the hopes of Dobbs and his associates. After the return of the expedition the attention of its sponsors turned to a direct attack on the monopoly of the Hudson's Bay Company. Although the Northwest Passage continued to be used as a weapon against the Company the question of its existence slipped from center-stage to the wings. Whatever else the expeditions of 1741-2 and 1746-7 accomplished the publicity given to their explorations brought a greatly increased interest in Hudson Bay and its hinterland. This interest was not always accompanied by accurate and dispassionate information. Even so a comparison of the knowledge available about the geography trade and native inhabitants of the Bay area at the time of the Parliamentary inquiry of 1749 with the situation before Middleton's voyage represents a breakthrough in British perceptions of the Canadian sub-Arctic.

Condition:

Fine copies in like jackets. Title continues: 'With Notes And Extracts From Mr. Richardson's Account Of The Expedition, And A Sketch Of Denham And Clapperton's Expedition, by the American Editor'. Born in Hamburg Germany, Henry Barth was one of the greatest of the European explorers of Africa. His scholarly preparation, ability to speak and write Arabic, learning African languages, and character meant that he carefully documented the details of the cultures he visited. He was among the first to comprehend the uses of oral history of peoples, and collected many. He established friendships with African rulers and scholars during his five years of travel (1850-1855). After the deaths of two European companions, he completed his travels with the aid of Africans. Afterwards, he wrote and published a five-volume account of his travels in both English and German. Unteres Kapital u. Ecken bestoßen u. berieben, Text papierbedingt gebräunt u. z. Tl. fingerfleckig, im hint. Falz aufgeplatzt. Henze I, 200 ff. (vgl. dazu: Ausstellungskat. ?Abenteuer Ostafrika?. S.147).‎

‎Travels in North-America In the Years 1780 1782 and 1782‎

‎Two volumes: xv462 pages with two folding maps; xv430 pages with three folding plates. Octavo 8 1/4" x 5 1/4" bound in original full leather with black and red labels to spine lettered in gilt. translated from the French by an English gentleman who resided in America at that period ; with notes by the translator. Translated by G. Grieve Watt and Sabin ascribe the translation to J. Kent. Sabin 12229 First Irish edition.

Chastellux was a military officer who served during the War of American Independence as a major general in the French expeditionary forces led by general Comte de Rochambeau. Being on general Rochambeau's staff for the duration of the war Chastellux acted as the principal liaison officer between the French commander in chief and George Washington. However the Chevalier de Chastellux was also widely recognized at the time of his campaigns in America as a highly talented man of letters and a member of the French Academy. After arriving in America in July 1780 Chastellux participated to the American Revolutionary War as Major General in the French expeditionary force led by general Rochambeau. During the following year he was third in command of the French forces engaged at the decisive Siege of Yorktown in 1781 where the British were ultimately defeated. Major General de Chastellux was fluent in English and with his strong ideological support of the American cause he served the alliance well. During the latter part of the campaign he was the principal liaison officer between George Washington and French general Rochambeau. Thereafter Chastellux remained a personal friend of George Washington for life. Furthermore the College of William and Mary and the University of Pennsylvania also awarded Chastellux with honorary degrees. After his return to France Chastellux also remained in contact with Thomas Jefferson now the American representative in Paris whom he had previously visited on his Virginia estate at Monticello.

Condition:

Title page clipped at top corner first fold out map repaired map edges repaired hinges repaired previous owner's names on front paste downs and content pages else a good set.
