First edition.<br /><br />William Bourne of Gravesend by trade a gunner was a successful writer of a new type of textbook. Neither a scholar not of gentle birth both of which were regarded as the prerequisites of authorship in the sixteenth century when scientific books were expected to appear only in universities and to be read only by those fluent in Latin Bourne nevertheless produced a whole series of technical manuals written in English for the artisans and craftsmen of his own class. <i>A Regiment for the Sea</i> which forms the core of the volume is perhaps the earliest technical manual written by an Englishman. It is not simply his rules for navigation for Bourne wrote much as he spoke so that out of this instruction book for sailors a clear picture of the man himself emerges: serious reliable patriotic and with this inborn impulse to pass on his knowledge to others. The first edition of 1574 is printed here in full with the additional material which was added to the 1580 edition. Taylor has also included two <i>Almanackes</i>. She has written an introductory section to each text and in her General Introduction she fills in the details of Bourne's life and discusses his various writings.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Pages uncut corners bumped. Contemporary Cambridge-style paneled calf sympathetically rebacked spine with five raised bands ruled in gilt recent red morocco lettering piece gilt all edges speckled red plain period end papers. An all-together elaborate production in Fine clean bright condition each map fully and elaborately engraved by Emanuel Bowen and enhanced with little-known historical facts supplied by the antiquarian John Owen elaborate heraldic images rococo cartouches and decorative borders. Scarce first or second issue with "next ye King of Spain in S: Katherines" in the imprint statement later issues read "near ye Stairs in St. Katherine's". Issue points as follows: p. 8 Sussex 'rapes' administrative boundaries not numbered; p.128 misnumbered '121' a previous owner has added lines to the numeral '1' making it look like an '8'. One leading expert identifies our copy as the second issue but has not disclosed the nature of his reasoning. As an entirely engraved chock-a-block with information Britannia depicta or Ogilby improv'd was being constantly corrected and updated. Of the examples dated 1720 Hobson identifies eight variants laid out in six distinct 'editions.' ESTC does not record this imprint. ¶ First edition first or second issue of this fully and finely engraved road atlas of England and Wales a smaller-format popular version reduced to half the original scale of Ogilby's famous seventeenth-century road atlases of England originally published in two versions both 1675 in folio editions. Ogilby's survey undertaken to prepare the atlases was perhaps the most accurate to date; he used the new distance of 1760 yards to a mile instead of the old standard of 2428 yards and calculated measurements methodically by foot. Because of public demand for these accurate strip road maps in a format conducive to travel several smaller versions were published with the present edition being one of the most successful. Bowen was official map engraver to both George II and Louis XV of France producing some of the finest and most intricately engraved English county maps of his time. N. B. First edition. <br /><br />Since 1846 the Hakluyt Society has published over 200 scholar editions of "Voyages and Travels" these being the primary sources of the initial stages of intercontinental "cultural encounter" as well as documents of exploratory enterprise. The present volume of essays celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Society. A general essay by one of the editors Paul Hair examines the set of editions for evidence of their geographical and chronological range their scholarly editing their ideological presuppositions and the light that they throw on developments over the period in the nature and management of the Society. Next a series of biographical essays relates distinguished figures in the history of the Society to their immediate context within British society and British overseas activities. Roy Bridges discusses the foundation of the Society and the role of the almost forgotten progenitor the geographer Desborough Cooley. Tony Campbell map Librarian of the British Library draws attention to the relationship between the British Museum and the early Society through a wide-ranging study of the life and career of R H Major publiciser of "Henry the Navigator". The multifarious activities of Clements Markham the longest-serving Honorary Secretary of the Society in the whole period whose interests ranged from Polar explorations to Inca drama are considered by Ann Savours. An engineer in mid-Victorian India who became a leading expert on medieval European travelers to China Henry Yule is the subject of an essay by Richard Bingle. Three later figures are also assessed in each case by a scholar who was acquainted with the individual: William Foster who worked from the India Office and published extensively on the records of teh English East India Company; R A Skelton whose accidental death in 1970 brought to an end a notable series of studies in historical cartography; and Esmond de Beer editor of Evely and Locke who presided over the Society in the 1970s.
