‎ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1875.‎

‎Copeland Saucer with expedition crest featuring a polar bear marked Discovery marked with Copeland anchor inscribed Arctic Expedition 1875 and their stamp on verso.‎

‎1875. Diameter 172 mm; centre a little worn otherwise very good not dishwasher-safe. This is a rare survival from the near-tragic expedition led by Captain George Nares on behalf of the British government in the ships HMS Alert and HMS Discovery. The expedition sailed on 29 May 1875 with the chief aim of reaching the North Pole. Previous American expeditions had led Nares to believe that the best route to the Pole was via Smith Sound but after much hardship this was found to be impracticable and the ships returned to Portsmouth in October 1876. Nares was the first explorer to take his ships all the way north through the channel between Greenland and Ellesmere Island now named Nares Strait in his honour to the Lincoln Sea. This saucer was produced for HMS Discovery captained by Henry Frederick Stephenson. Built in Dundee in 1873 as the whaler Bloodhound the ship was purchased by the Admiralty and fitted out for the expedition. The design of the ship was influential on the construction of Scott's 1901-built research vessel RRS Discovery. unknown‎

‎Prutky's Travels in Ethiopia and Other Countries‎

‎xxviii546 pages with frontispiece 4 maps plate appendices bibliography and index. Octavo 8 3/4" x 5 3/4" bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and decorative gilt pictorial of the ship <i>Victoria</i> to front cover in original jacket. Annotated by Richard Pankhurst. Second series volume 174. First edition.<br /><br />Remedius Prutky Franciscan missionary was in 1751 appointed vice-prefect of a mission sent to Ethiopia in response to an invitation by the then emperor Iyasu II; with two colleagues he left Cairo in August and reached Massawa in November. After some delay he was summoned to Gondar which he reached in March and largely by his expertise in medicine began to make friends among the court and the clergy. But the Coptic archbishop at Gondar soon prevailed upon the weak Emperor to expel the missionaries who thus spent only nine months in Gondar and seventeen months in the country altogether. From Masawa the missionaries went to Mocha and thence by courtesy of a French ship to Pondicherry where Dupleix the governor sent them in October 1752 to L'Orient in France. From there they returned to Rome by way of the Canal du Midi and Marseilles. From Rome Prutky recounts his journey to his home in Bohemia his interview with Maria Theresa and her consort and his journey back to Egypt via Leghorn. He then tells of his voyage back to Rome from Alexandria through the Archipelago. The Ethiopian adventure forms the bulk of the whole and in view of the scarcity of information about that country is the underlying reason for the translation of the book. But Prutky's account of Mocha and the European trading factories there as well as his description of India and Ceylon as seen during six weeks in Pondicherry is of no small interest as is his account of Dupleix's recently completed palace destoryed in 1761. Both his voyage from Mocha to Pondicherry and his much longer voyage from Pondicherry to France are given added interest by the inclusion of the daily ship's log. The ends with a sad account not written by Prutky of his final task as Prefect of the mission in St Petersburg from 1766 to 1769 ending with his expulsion from Russia by Catherine the Great and his death in Florence immediately afterwards.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Some light rubbing to jacket extremities else a better than very good copy in like jacket. ‎The Diary of A J Mounteney Jephson. Emin Pasha Relief Expedition 1887-1889‎

‎xii456 pages with 2 maps 16 illustrations and index. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 1/2" issued in the original blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover. With Preface Prologue and Epilogue compiled by the Editor in Collaboration with Maurice Denham Jephson. Extra Series number 40. First edition<br /><br />This is a first-hand account of the expedition led by H M Stanley in 1887-89 to the relief of Emin Pasha Governor of Equatoria. A J Mounteney Jephson a typical late Victorian traveler took part in Stanley's last expedition in Africa. His discovered diary describes the voyage out to the mouth of the Congo; the jouney up the Congo and across the Ituri forest to Lake Albert; the meeting with Emin Pasha; the mutiny of Emin's troops and their imprisonment of Emin and Jephson; and the journey back to the East coast. Though it fell short of its political and commercial aims the expedition was important geographically as it solved the last mystery of African topography - the position and nature of the sources of the Nile. At least two-thirds of the diary is given in full with clearly-indicated cuts only in the portion where Jephson and Emin were imprisoned by the mutineers a period covered by Jephson's own book Emin Pasha 1890. In her introduction Middleton describes Jephson's family background and summarizes the political events of the time: the "scramble for Africa" by the European Powers which formed the background for the expedition. Second printing.<br /><br />Thomas Ashe 1770-1835 was born in Dublin Ireland and was a soldier and memoirist. Much of his life was checkered with intrigue and fraud. His Memoirs and Confessions 1815 is an autobiographical account of 'criminal and delinquent' escapades beginning with the seduction of a girl in France. In America he edited the National Intelligencer and was arrested when attempting to steal treasures from churches in Latin America. His Travels in America first appeared in 1806. The narrative chronicles Ashe's travels by flatboat down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in 1806 and is one of the first travelogues written by a foreigner to comment specifically on the American inhabitants of the region. A unrestrained hatred of Americans can be found throughout the work. ‎'Antarctic Petrels on the Nest Cape Hunter'‎

‎A vintage sepia-toned gelatin silver photograph 333 451 mm flush-cut on the original thick card mount. The label of the Fine Art Society New Bond Street London is on the verso of this print with the title as above and the London catalogue reference number 88 in pencil; the latter is crossed out and replaced with the Australian catalogue reference number 86. The photograph has recently been hinge-mounted and matted using archival materials ready for framing visible image size 320 440 mm; in excellent condition. This print comes from the original 1915 Australian exhibition of Hurley photographs; this was a slightly enlarged version of the London exhibition held earlier in the same year. Also other Photographic Studies by Frank Hurley' small octavo 16 pages plus 8 full-page plates and the title-wrappers; printed in Adelaide by G. Hassell & Son. A small advertisement appeared in the Adelaide 'Advertiser' on Saturday 25 September 1915 announcing a 'South Polar Exhibit. until October 6. This Exhibition is your only opportunity of viewing Historical Relics of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition and Frank Hurley's Unexcelled Photographic Reproductions'. The images were sourced primarily from Mawson's 1911-1914 Australasian Antarctic Expedition but there were also several sections of non-polar images as well under the headings 'Northern Territory Australia' 'Java' and 'Miscellaneous'. This photograph was taken at Cape Hunter 'a rocky promontory on the west shore of Commonwealth Bay Antarctica . 15 km west of Cape Denison.
